ಗೊರೂರು ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅಯ್ಯಂಗಾರ್(ಜುಲೈ ೪, ೧೯೦೪ - ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ೮, ೧೯೯೧) ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಬಂಧ ಲೇಖನಗಳಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಛಾಪು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದವರು. ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಚಳುವಳಿ, ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಜಾ ಸರ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಚಳುವಳಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಏಕೀಕರಣ ಚಳುವಳಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋರಾಡಿ ಹರಿಜನೋದ್ಧಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ರಾಮೊದ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ ಅವರೊಬ್ಬ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಗಾಂಧಿವಾದಿ. ಗೊರೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮ, ಹೇಮಾವತಿ ನದಿ – ಈ ಎರಡೂ ಗೊರೂರರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಿಂದ ಅಮರವಾದವು. ‘ಹೇಮಾವತಿ’, ಆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮಸ್ತಕ್ಕೂ ಸ್ಪೂರ್ತಿ. ಹೀಗೆ ಒಂದು ಊರಿನೊಡನೆ, ನದಿಯೊಡನೆ ಅಭಿನ್ನತೆ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ ಲೇಖಕರು ವಿರಳವೇ. ‘ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು’, ‘ಗರುಡಗಂಬದ ದಾಸಯ್ಯ’, ‘ನಮ್ಮ ಊರಿನ ರಸಿಕರು’, ‘ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು’, ‘ಕಥೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿನೋದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು’, ‘ಬೆಸ್ತರ ಕರಿಯ’, ‘ಹೇಮಾವತಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು’ – ಈ ಸಂಕಲನಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಗೊರೂರರ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಥಾಂಶ ದಟ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡಿವೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಗೊರೂರರ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು, ‘ಪ್ರಬಂಧ’ ಎಂಬ ಶಬ್ದದ ಸೀಮಿತ ಅರ್ಥಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯುಳ್ಳದ್ದು ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಗೊರೂರರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಅಪರೂಪದ್ದು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರಿಗೇ ಅನುರೂಪವಾದದ್ದು. ಗೊರೂರರು ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ 28, 1991ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನರಾದರು.

ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ್ದೇ. ಬಹಳ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಪುನಃ ಓದುವಾಗ ಖುಷಿಯಾಯ್ತ್ತು. ಬಹಳ ಸಮಯದ ನಂತಕ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಆಪ್ತ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ನೀಡುವ ಆಹ್ಲಾದಕತೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಲಲಿತ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು. ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಓದಿ ಆಸ್ವಾದಿಸುವಂತಹು. ಮೇಲ್ನೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂತಹ ಗಹನ ವಿಷಯಗಳೇನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಗ್ರಾಮ್ಯ ಬದುಕಿನ ಆಗೂಹೋಗುಗಳಷ್ಟೇ ಅನಿಸಿದರು ಹೊಸ ಚಿಂತನೆಗಳ ರುವಾರಿಗಳು ಈ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು.

Oh wow, I am surprised to to see this on Goodreads, really.
Oh boy, it reminds me of my days as a 15 year old reading Kannada books. The book is an absolute treat for a person like me who is interested in non fiction. It gives an insight into the lives of the village folk who live in the village of Gorur (which is near Hassan, in Karnataka, India). Every chapter revolves around a different incident and talks about how the naive village folks went about dealing with it. Sometimes successfully and some times not so successfully. It's funny and I was really transported to Gorur as I was reading this book.
Iyengar is quite a well known author in Kannada literature. It wouldn't do justice if I'd say anything about him as I have only read this book of his and a bit of "Bhootayyana Maga Ayyu", which I also think is quite brilliant, but I haven't read it fully, so I shall keep away from talking about it.
This book is definitely one of those books whose English translation I await.

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಓದಿ ಹಲವು ವರುಶಗಳೇ ಸಂದಿವೆ. ಅಷ್ಟಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿಸಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಮರು ಓದನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳಲಿಲ್ಲ! ಗ್ರಾಮ್ಯ ಬದುಕಿನ ಪರಿಚಯ ನನಗೆ ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದರಿಂದಲೂ ಇರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ್ದರಿಂದಲೂ ಇರಬಹುದು. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಇದು ಗೋರೂರಿನ ಜನರ, ಜೀವನದ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಪರಿಚಯ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹತ್ತು ಜನರಿದ್ದರೇ ಹತ್ತು ವನಸ್ಸುಗಳಿರುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ; ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಸ್ಯವೂ ಇರುವುದು, ತಾರತಮ್ಯವೂ ಇರುವುದು, ಸಂಘಟಿತ ಬಾಳ್ವೆಯೂ ಇರುವುದು, ಅಸೂಯೆಯೂ ಇರುವುದು, ಮುಗ್ಧತೆಯೂ ಇರುವುದು, ಇವೆಲ್ಲವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬಾಳ್ವೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವುದು ಅಷ್ಟೇ!!!

ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಹೆಸರು ನೋಡಿದಾಕ್ಷಣ ಇದು ರಸಿಕರ ಕಥೆ ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡುಬಿಟ್ಟೀರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲವೇ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಇದು ಒಂದು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಜೀವನ, ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ, ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನರ ಬದುಕು, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಇವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ಒಂದು ಕಥಾಲೋಕ.ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಬಿದ್ದು ಬಿದ್ದು ನಗುವ ಹಾಸ್ಯವಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಸ್ಯವೆಂದರೆ ಕೊಠಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಕುಳಿತು ಓದಿ ನಗುವ ಹಾಸ್ಯವಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಘಟನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಾಸ್ಯ. ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಕಷ್ಟವಿದ್ದರೂ ಅನುಭವಿಸಬಹುದಾದ ಹಾಸ್ಯ. ಇದು ಜೀವನ ಪಾಠ ಮತ್ತು ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಎರಡೂ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಿಳಿತಗೊಂಡು ಮೃಷ್ಟಾನ್ನವನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವ ಅನುಭವ ನೀಡುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ.

The only book from school syllabus that I wanted to re-read. 16 years later this book is still as fresh as ever. It gives you a sample of the simple village life and its colorful characters. An enjoyable light read in simple day to day Kannada.

I listened to this audiobook on storytel. It is not a novel or even a story. It is just a series of random incidents that happened in the author's village in malnad region in the 1930s. This is sort of similar to the introduction given in the hugely popular Hindi webseries gullak -- yeh kahani nahin, kisse hai (idu kathe alla, ghatanegalu)

It gives a fantastic view of how India was reshaping around 90 years ago. There are incidents of setting up a rural panchayat, random incidents of ghosts, of someone trying hard to pass SSLC and after passing, correcting everyone to avoid "gramya bhashe" ... A series of small totally forgettable incidents. But as I read (or rather listened to) it 90 years later, it gave me a view of the life of malnad region back then. Books like this teach more about history rather than all those history books talking about kings, kingdoms and wars.

Unfortunately there is little to no literature (at least I am not aware) like this book written in 19th century or earlier ... It is almost impossible to figure what life was for normal people during those days. The only source are the inscription stones ...
