This book is very well written and portrays the life a mom bringing her daughter to work. I really like how the author has created longer sentences on the pages rather than a short worded picture book. The illustrations are also very well done as they show the characteristics and face expressions of the characters throughout the story line. I think as children read this book they can imagine themselves in the main character’s shoes or relate to her in the fact that they’ve dreamed of doing something they see their parents do. I think this book would be a good book in a lesson about careers or just in general as a book to help students with their predicting skills. Students can learn about hairdressers and what they do. They could also practice making predictions as they look at the title and throughout the book as they read. It is a well constructed book for them to learn a variety of things from and would recommend to others.

Shauna goes to her mother's hair salon on Saturday where everyone is getting a new look. This book is wonderfully written, the illustrations are beautifully done and the theme of diversity and way of life for a specific group of individuals is so nicely done. My kiddos have been checking it out regularly. Very well done.

Saturday is Shauna's favorite day of the week because it is the day that she is allowed to help out at her mother's salon. One particular Saturday Shauna helps out one of the customers pick out a new hairstyle. She is so excited that the customer is happy. I think that I would use this book with students to teach them about being helpful. I would express how great it feels when you have helped someone and they could write about a time when they were helpful, or ways that they could be helpful in the classroom. The authors cultural background is reflected in the story. The illustrations are great representation of what occurs in a real beauty salon and they really enhance the tone of the story in a positive way.

When your Mom has her own business you might come to work with her, the girl featured in this story enjoys the experience of helping her Mom at the New You Beauty Salon. For girls the beauty shop can be tough at times, I love the reaction of one young customer, when asked if she would like a new do, she let's out a loud screech. The stories brings in other examples of business women from the neighborhood who are taking Saturday afternoon to get spruced up. Girls are enjoy playing with dolls in this book, act a little silly and are devoted to their families. A Lee Low book set in an African American Beauty Shop tells the story of every woman and every girl spending time in curlers, lotion and hot dryers to get the "New You." Saturday at the New You is about a little girl named Shauna who helps her mom at the hair salon every Saturday. This particular Saturday, Shauna helps a customer choose a hairstyle. This story could promote everyday helpfulness in the classroom. Also, students can share stories or pictures about an activity they do often with their families. The illustrations are all in color and gives the reader a feel of the mood of the story. When the young customer is unhappy, there is a picture of her pouting. When the customer is pleased with her hair in the end, they show her smiling. The authors cultural background relates to the characters background.

This book is about a little girl who loves to help her mother out at the hair salon. She is excited one day when she gets to make a suggestion for a hairstyle for one of the customers. This can be used to teach students to work together and help each other out or even make suggestions .

Award Winner- Children's Book Selection of the Year. Love the illustration and the rich tones. I believe it's a book that sincerely represents the strenghth of the African American Community; the hair parlor is a big part of our saturdays( it becomes a way of life).

Summary:this is a story about Shauna and her mom's Saturday at the hair salon. Shauna has a dream of doing hair. She tries to help her mom so much, but can only do so much.
Evaluation:This is an example of realistic fiction. This story could happen but did not happen this exact way.
Teaching Idea: I would use this as a mentor text for writing. I would have the students listen to the story. I would have the students write something that they do with an adult in their lives that is special to them. this would be a journal entry.
