So good. This story keeps calling to me: it’s as outrageous and tragic as nothing that has ever been written in fiction and O’Connor does a great job of mixing fact with his own sharp conclusions and character judgments, especially when it comes to Maximilian.
A well-rounded, fair, lively, and factual account of the Second Mexican Empire, a venture like practically no other in history.

An abolutely readable book about Maximillian and Carlotta, the Emperor and Empress of Mexico for a brief time. Real insight into this overlooked period of Mexican history, and a fascinating description of an Old World versus New World clash.

A detailed and intimate description of the bizarre imperialist attempt to take over Mexico.
