Forgetting is inevitably a daily occurrence -- or so we thought. This book argues that the human brain's limits come not from the deterioration of one's body at the coming of old age, but rather because there are not enough connections in one's mind to recall stored information. Essentially, the author sought to educate her readers of how to how to use skills such as imagination and visualization to retain information as long as possible. Suppose we did not have reference tables to remember a physics formula. How would we be able to solve problems involving the laws of physics? Rose proposes that we make a story out of the formula, and use as much of our senses to bury such information into our brain. For example, the formula for index of refraction is c/v. In more concise writing, n=c/v. Without constantly repeating the equation at the the mind's ear, it appears impossible to remember the formula. However, there is a method to escape from this implausibility. When read from right to left, one could insert a few more letters to make "vacation." In the same way that index of refractions is related to how much light bends, when we take vacations, we bend from our normal path of life. As one makes this realization, he could imagine the smell of the sea as he lies in the embrace of the warm sun. While doing so, one's senses are sharpened and information is etched into the long term memory. If one can do so much with this three-variable formula, then the possibilities with more complicated problems is filled with optimism. I recommend this book to anyone seeking to improve brain capacity and exploring the how the limits we place on ourselves are nothing but superficial.
This a reference book, referring to other references. There are mentions of interesting tests and mind studies, but nothing life-changing. The last half of the book acts as a sales gimmick trying to convince you to attend an Accelerated Learning class.
This is a decent enough reference for addressing a variety of learning styles, but doesn't really offer anything new. It felt very long winded and redundant.
If our children or ourselves want to improve intelligence in various aspects, this is the right book. A book that will guide us step by step in increasing our brain and mental intelligence effectively.
Book goes in a structured way and teaches about teaching method called Accelerated Learning. Author starts with explaining basics of the brain and how memory works. She teaches differences of two hemispheres in our brain and how they could be used and stimulated to better encode information. Example used theought the book is learning of foreign languages, althought principles of accelerated learning defined can be used in other areas too.
In a short hand principles of accelerated learning:
• Relaxed state of mind. This can be achieved using deep breathing exercise as well as physical body stretching and exercise.
• Barriers on how much you can learn must be lifted.
• Strong information encoding using visual, emotional and audio elements. Such as pictures, visuals in your mind, colours, mind maps and listening to Baroque style music.
• When learning you should not be put down or feel bad if something doesnt go right.
• Breaks between learning sessions is a must. Good night sleep also helps the information to sink in.
• Revision and recall of the information must happen after a while too.

I wish I had read it before I went to Medical school. I have already applied most of the techniques found in this book simply because it works and not because school taught me how. I wish I knew all of those techniques before although I was still able to pick up some new ones... thanks to this book. This should be read by everyone in the academe and most importantly, be applied for the benefit of the students found in all of us and the people we love.
This was probably my favorite book on Brain-based learning that used what it teaches to teach. I like their discoveries and stories about applying these tactics to learning new languages, 300 words or more a day.
This book contains much of the research used for Accelerated Learning for the 21st century. I liked it. It also shows where some of the research and thoughts are coming from for the PHOTOREADING system.
Ayah saya memberikan buku ini saat saya masih SMA. Buku ini lebih cocok untuk mahasiswa pedagogi. Isinya luar biasa banyak jargon pendidikan modern. Bagus dan pesan yg diberikan kurang lebih mengelaborasi usulan Paideia nya Mortimer J. Adler.
