1958 年ミネソタのロチェスター生まれ。ミネソタ州文化局の広報をつとめた経験を持つ。ミネソタ州におけるアイルランド音楽と舞踊協会の設立者。1996 年に短篇「ウォーターボーン」でグリマー・トレイン新人賞を受賞。初の長篇となる『アイルランドの柩』(小社刊)は、アガサ賞及びアンソニー賞の最優秀処女長篇賞にノミネートされるなど高い評価を得た。現在はボタン・アコーディオン奏者の夫とともにミネアポリスに暮らし、頻繁にアイルランドを訪れている
