Law for Professional Engineers

Rate this book
The purpose of this text is twofold: (i) to provide the Canadian engineering profession with a reference text on legal issues and principles of relevance to practising engineers; and (ii) to prepare candidates for Canada's professional practice engineering law examinations. The professional practice examination is now a prerequisite in many provinces and territories for licensure of Professional Engineers. Consistent with the purpose of the professional practice examinations, the focus of this text is to provide helpful insights into areas of the law of particular relevance to engineers in practice. This fourth edition has been prepared to update particular aspects of the law that have seen significant change through legislation or court decisions since the third edition in 1996.

This book provides a digestible and solid foundation of the concepts for the Professional Practice Exam for engineers. The only peeve I had was with the chapter on construction liens; I could not comprehend any of the concepts in that chapter without reference to other material.

Not bad. Cases were interesting. Not everyone is born to be lawyer, and this book reaffirms that.

Required* reading for the NPPE.

Actually fairly interesting, but I had a previous interest in law.
Very easy to read and the last 20% of this book is review of Canadian Professional Engineering And Geoscience: Practice and Ethics.

*The PEO's website recommends both this book and Practical Law of Architecture, Engineering, and Geoscience, Third Canadian Edition while their syllabus only recommends the other book. The PEO maintains that they only "recommend" books and any law textbook can be used to prepare.

For what it is, it's good. Unfortunately, even the best of writers struggle with making tort law, contract law, negligence, etc interesting. The book is probably of most use to civil engineers, those dealing with construction, and naturally, those writing the engineering law and ethics exam.

I read this in preparation for the Professional Practice Exam of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. It covers a wide range of legal topics that would be on interest to engineers, including tort law, negligence, contract law, environmental law, etc. It contains many, many case studies to illustrate the underlying principles. It is comprehensive and well-written, but is likely of little interest outside of a university course on the topic or exam prep.

Why do we consider corporations as seperate legal entities? And what happens when shareholders use the corporation as a cover for their shady schemes? Find out on the next exciting episode of Law for Engineers!

In all seriousness, I find all these cases presented in this book to be very interesting, but memorizing all the terms for the PPE is not fun. I also suspect this book is priced too high because it's basically required reading if you want to pass the PPE.
