Please see my review for book #1 of this series too! Masques is the novelization of three seperate episodes from the Beauty and the Beast TV show. "Arabesque" (season two), "Masques" (season one) and "The Watcher" (season two). If you enjoy getting inside the heads of your favorite characters from the show, especially Vincent and Catherine, read this book. You'll love it!
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. It felt more like a tiny anthology. In the course of a year and a half 3 major events happen to these characters, and it just felt like too much.
This is a decent novelization if nothing spectacular. It takes on three episodes from the television series; "Arabesque," "Masques" and "The Watcher." I was anticipating that author Ru Emerson would link these three disparate stories better into one cohesive whole but this is never done. The episodes are also taken out of the order they appeared in the show, so Emerson plays pretty fast and loose with the chronological timeline of the series. As an uber-fan this irritated me a bit, but it's something easily overlooked.
The stories of the first two episodes are very straightforward adaptations, nothing spectacular or new is brought to them that wasn't apparent in their original televised forms. I've always found "Arabesque" to be a rather dull episode, but "Masques" is always enchanting.
It's in "The Watcher" that Emerson really hits her stride. She gives the character of The Watcher some added background and motivation that aren't included in the TV show. Novelizations can sometimes come across as very dry, but Emerson is able to insert her own authorial voice to the proceedings, especially when delving into thoughts of secondary characters.
Overall a worthy effort, but there's not much new here to recommend it besides the "Watcher" segment.
Beauty & The Beast was a favorite show of mine. The poetry & Romance! Vincent ' s Torment! These things filled me with inspiration and created a love of the romance genre in general. Artist & Writer Wendy Pini created two wonderful graphic novels about the show that I love and still own today. This however is my first novel if read about the series and I had pretty high expectations . They really weren't met. Ru does a great job with characters and situations but I didn't feel the emotional depth between characters. Maybe it's because the individual stories focus more about characters intruding on Vincent & Catherine's lives then their relationship. To be fair these are adaptation of actual episodes of the show but, I still just couldn't feel the same chemistry of characters as on the TV show.
Probably one of my favourite episodes of beauty and the beast. There is a really nice adoption of it, in capsulating romances of the moment. The fact that Vincent is actually able to walk around as a normal man for once, his face his mask for the ball, allows him a moment of freedom with Catherine.
Of course it’s so obviously a direct steal from POTO. I wonder why I love it so. My two fave things In The world.
Barbara is an excellent writer And I keep meaning to get round to reading some of her Star Trek novels as well. There is one more beauty and the beast book after this it’s a shame didn’t do more of these tie in books considering all the other Memorabilia they produced. But one has to be content with what was one has.
Ok where to start - yep this is another of the late night TV viewing titles - its actually 3 stories in one all take from actual episodes> To me I enjoyed this though I say this looking over my shoulder as usually I am not the biggest fans of novels and films (or TV) crossing over as there is always something lost in translation one way or the other. However this time it works and I really enjoyed reading in the bits the show could not put - after all genre shows have come along way. In short its a book I enjoy reading and re-reading and I feel no shame in that.
I picked this up only because I always wanted to know what was going on inside Catherine and Vincent's heads during their TV episodes. Sure I could guess or imagine, but having it in writing makes it almost canon and I like having the insight. This basically writes out 3 of the TV episodes from different seasons, so their not continuous. It's pretty true to character and I loved reading them. Also, I read these before the episodes were out on DVD, so this was as close as I could get to reruns.
