Jude Gilliam was born September 20, 1947 in Fairdale, Kentucky. She has a large extended family and is the elder sister of four brothers. She attended Murray State University and received a degree in Art. In 1967, Jude married and took her husband's surname of White, but four years later they divorced. For years, she worked as 5th-grade teacher.
She began writing in 1976, and published her first book, The Enchanted Land (1977) under the name Jude Deveraux. Following the publication of her first novel, she resigned her teaching position. Now, she is the author of 31 New York Times bestsellers.
Jude won readers' hearts with the epic Velvet series, which revolves around the lives of the Montgomery family's irresistible men. Jude's early books are set largely in 15th- and 16th-century England; in them her fierce, impassioned protagonists find themselves in the midst of blood feuds and wars. Her heroines are equally scrappy -- medieval Scarlett O'Haras who often have a low regard for the men who eventually win them over. They're fighters, certainly, but they're also beauties who are preoccupied with survival and family preservation.
Jude has also stepped outside her milieu, with mixed results. Her James River trilogy (River Lady, Lost Lady, and Counterfeit Lady) is set mostly in post-Revolution America; the popular, softer-edged Twin of Fire/Twin of Ice moves to 19th-century Colorado and introduces another hunky-man clan, the Taggerts.
Deveraux manages to evoke a strong and convincing atmosphere for each of her books, but her dialogue and characters are as familiar as a modern-day soap opera's. "Historicals seem to be all I'm capable of," Jude once said in an interview, referring to a now out-of-print attempt at contemporary fiction, 1982's Casa Grande. "I don't want to write family sagas or occult books, and I have no intention of again trying to ruin the contemporary market." Still, Jude did later attempt modern-day romances, such as the lighthearted High Tide (her first murder caper), the contemporary female friendship story The Summerhouse, and the time-traveling Knight in Shining Armor. In fact, with 2002's The Mulberry Tree, Deveraux seems to be getting more comfortable setting stories in the present, which is a good thing, since the fans she won with her historical books are eager to follow her into the future.
Jude married Claude White, who she later divorced in 1993. Around the same time she met Mohammed Montassir with whom she had a son, Sam Alexander Montassir, in 1997. On Oct. 6th, 2005, Sam died at the age of eight in a motorcycle accident.
Jude has lived in several countries and all over the United States. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and has an additional home in the medieval city of Badolato, Italy.
Alex McDowell and Cay Harcourt were adorable. They were so anti each other that it made for a tense read wondering when they were going to realize they were meant for each other. I loved when they were sneaking around in the everglades in 1799. That was so funny to me and just added another layer of icing on the cake. Fun story and great characters. It is what a Deveraux novel is meant to be. I loved it.
Once again, I fall victim to my Jude Deveraux addiction. While few of Deveraux's books ever land on my favorites shelf, I always consistently return to her when I need a good read. A few of her books (Holly, Sweetbriar, and the Forever and Always trilogy, for example) fall flat for me, but I'm always willing to give her books a chance. This time, I'm glad I did. The Scent of Jasmine is a new favorite of mine.
So far, there are four books in the Edilean series, and only one has truly disappointed me--Days of Gold. The rest of the series has been fun and inventive. Deveraux's task in this series--telling the history of a town through it's romances--has given her writing a much needed boost. The unique format of the series plays to Deveraux's strengths--her ability to write in both modern and historical settings, her lighthearted humor, excellent research skills, and her ability to create a rich texture of interconnected narratives. This book tells the story of Cay and Alex in 1799 South Carolina. Alex has been convicted of murder and scheduled to hang. Cay's godfather convinces her to assist Alex in his escape from prison, but nothing goes as planned. Cay is recognized, and she and Alex are soon fugitives. Thrown together by chance, the pair bond over their flight and find themselves struggling to create a future while running from the past.
The Scent of Jasmine was just what I wanted it to be, lighthearted and sweet. I recommend it for fans of Deveraux and those seeking a simple historical romance.
This is the most convoluted confusing blurb I've read in a long time. I read it 3 times and still didn't understand what I was reading! And this is the author who got me solidly into romance!!!
Okurken bana Judith McNaught kaleminin tadını verdi. Son sayfasına kadar merakla ve keyifle okudum. Her karakteri ayrı güzeldi. Kesinlikle okuyun derim. Hatta..."
Hmm.... I'm not exactly sure what to say about this one. I liked it ... and I didn't like it.
First off - what I liked. The book was a fun read. The characters were enjoyable and quirky with a lot of humor, which I liked a lot. There was a lot of action packed into this novel - AND of course I always enjoy a good historical fiction. =)
What I didn't like so much - the story was completely unbelievable. I know some people would probably say all romance novels are unbelievable, but that's not what I mean. It irritates me when a book is supposed to be a historical fiction, but yet breaks all rules of the time period. I just didn't feel like most of what happened in this story would have been realistic and it kind of lessened the whole story for me. I'll all for creative liberties and such, and the breaking of some rules is okay - but I just felt this one was way off in that department.
All in all, it was enjoyable and passed the time. Not amazing and not terrible.
If you want a lighthearted anf fun book, look for the Edilean'series by Jude Deveraux. The author choosed to tell this little town's story with a mix of historic and contemporary books. The Scent of Jasmine is a historic one. It is set in 1799's Charleston, South Carolina and the Florida Everglades. Alex is an outlaw, determined to clear his name and Cay Harcourt is a sassy and strong willed woman with a desire for adventure. She is the only daughter amongst many brothers. Their relationship is endearing but also a playful one. Alex and Cay with a little help (or non-help) of her brothers embark on a trip to non-charted lands. Along their journey, an atraction grows between them even though, they are too stuborn to realize it. They also learn many things about themselves. Cay learns how to deal with "real world" and to be self - reliant and Alex to enjoy life with simplicity and the big truth. Deveraux writes this relationship so well, Sometimes is comical and othertimes is serious. But is undeniable that they belong together, There are suttle nuances, witty moments and feisty arguments. Long before the end, you will root for a happy ending. However, the ending was a bit rushed for a book that took several chapters to develop.
When I was search for a light read at the bookstore. It was easy. I just tried to find a Judith (Mcnaught) or Jude (Deveraux) or a Julie (Garwood) when I stumbled to this book amongst the teen vampire fiction and erotic books. And as I eyed the title - Scent of Jasmine, I smirked - What a cliche! But I bought it, and am glad I did. I loved cay - the female lead, and Alex - the male lead and their chemistry. I am still laughing at their banter! Yes, it wasn't a perfect plot or narration, but it served it's purpose as a light read. I forgot to mention, I also found it very, very sweet to realise which memory was the book named after. So sweet!
Set in 1779 after the Revolutionary War, Cay Harcourt helps Alexander McDowell escape from prison in a more active role than she is anticipating. I am beginning to notice what I call "silly spots" in Ms. Deveraux's novels. This one had at least four of these spots. I have trouble aligning myself with the characters that I find guilty of this silliness, so I gave the book three stars. Otherwise I might have given it four stars since the pace was fast and the writing smooth.
I really do like this series. Catherine "Cay" Edilean Harcourt was a spectacular heroine. A woman out of her depth but determined to make due and survive. And Alexander "Alex" McDowell, an escaped convict railroaded into prison in the first place, makes the best of things, especially Cay to keep one step ahead of the law and prove his innocence. A thrilling story with a sweet, romantic romance.
Another charming read about the Edileans. If you're familiar with Jude Deveraux, then this novel has the same "feel" to many of her books. There is something irresistibly endearing about the characters and some sort of adventure or intrigue to the plot that will bring the hero and heroine together.
The Scent of Jasmine centers around Cay (Catherine Edilean Harcourt) and Alexander McDowell. From the outlook, the two are as different as night and day. Perhaps, because of this reason they suit each other so well. Cay, for all intent and purpose is a princess. She is wealthy, intelligent, well-mannered, and loved by many. Her own brothers, whom she finds all unbearable but also misses every minute she is not with them, are her own protectors. Her brothers have a dominant presence throughout the story, livened through Cay's talks and thoughts. Although they do not actually show up physically until near the end, they are just as endearing as Cay and Alex. Alex is far from a prince; he's a wanted man and not by women, but from the law, having been accused of the murder of his wife. He has not known a sheltered life but has always had to prove himself and make his own way in life.
Putting aside propriety and doubts, Cay sets out to rescue him from his predicament, which means going out into the wilds. She should be afraid of him and yet he intrigues her and an undeniable attraction grows between them. As they journey together, they also learn many things about themselves. Cay learns to be self-reliant and more aware of the world, whereas Alex becomes less jaded as he learns to enjoy life for its simplicity. Their journey is as much a physical one that sees them wrestling snakes and alligators as it is a personal one that leads to the beginning of a relationship. Often comical, and sometimes serious Cay and Alex show how much they belong together. Not just in actions but in unspoken words and subtle nuances: witty dialogue, feisty arguments and other heart-warming moments. Long before the end, you'll be rooting for and anticipating Cay and Alex's happy-ever-after.
I'm already looking forward to Adam, Nate, Ethan and Tally's stories (Cay's brothers).
In all fareness is more of a 3.85. As a friend of mine said, Jude has a more fluid writing in period novels and you can laugh more, so Days of Gold and this one are between the best of the Edilean saga. The problems I had with this book might not be fair to the writer or the story, because I spent some busy weeks without having the time to read it, and it affected how I related to the characters and what I remembered from the first chapters. However, I felt like Alex was a bit "love at first sight" with every girl and Cay changed him too much to be beliveable, because all of a sudden he could only look at her, but didn't feel real to me until the very end. Also at the beginning I couldn't relate to Cay because she was a bit dull, but she improved throughout the journey dressed as a man, so I guess I can say that man-Cay is better than women-Cay to me, and that's why is not four stars book. The end with the reference to the paintings and that special pink one was a nice touch and brought the book closer to the four stars. Summarizing: four stars but not quite there.
Yuck. This was possibly the worst book I have ever actually finished. It's sticky, cloying, unbelievable in every detail, completely ridiculously badly researched and all in all a truly horrible exercise. Let's just say this: as the hero (Scottish, naturally, because they all have to be Scottish for some unfathomable reason) is riding with the heroine (totally unbelievable and incredibly annoying) through the deep American South in 1799, they comment favorably on the lovely plantations and the happy "workers." Yeah, okay, give that shit up. I am a Southerner, so I can say this: I don't like my history sugar coated, thanks. Also, seriously, it would take a whole lot more than three days to ride a horse from Charleston to the Everglades. I mean, come on.
I found this book absolutely wonderful. This was the 4th Edilean novel I've read and I loved it.
I laughed at the scene of Alex and Tim. Alex accidentally 'kiss' Tim when he thought Tim was Cay. My colleague stared at me and I believe they thinks I'm crazy :D
The connection between Cay and her brothers wanting me more know about them. I hope that Jude Deveraux will continue her Edilean magic with the next generation Adam, Nate, Ethan and Tally because I cannot get enough of this family.
I missed this book when I first read the Edilean series years ago. I'm so glad my library had it this time around. The origins and explanations of so many mysteries that were prevalent from the previous book, "Scarlet Nights," were explained in this book. Ah, now I see why! It was very good! Onto the next book "Heartwishes." ;)
How does Jude Deveraux do this. She must have an outline that is HUGE! Recall the paintings CAY in Scarlette Nights? This tells who along with Alex and Merlin's Farm.
THE SCENT OF JASMINE by Jude Deveraux is a historical romance set in 1799 Charleston, South Carolina and the Florida Everglades. It is well written with depth and details. It is the fourth in "The Edilean Series".Book One "Lavender Morning",Book two "Days of Gold",Book three " Scarlet Nights",and can be read as a stand alone, although each book gives a little history into Edilean. It has mystery, betrayal, deceit, romance, heart pounding adventure, love, friendship, banter, humor, sweet sensuality, trust, and learning to know each other during times of extreme hardship. The plot flows easily and the characters are interesting, and entertaining. The hero,Alex, is Scottish, handsome, accused of the murder of his wife, escapes prison, determined to learn the truth of his wife's death, strong and devastated by his wife's death, although they where only married for a few hours. She was killed on their wedding night, while he slept. The heroine, Cay, is beautiful, witty, strong, has a adventurous spirit, agrees to deliver a package to the escaped convict. But things go wrong, and she and Alex is caught up in a quest for survival. Cay finds herself being attracted to Alex, although she believes him to be "old and ugly",he smells of prison stench and filth. Alex, while trying to keep away from Cay soon finds himself attracted to her also. As they track through the countryside of South Carolina and the Florida Everglades trying to avoid being capture. Alex is determined to find the truth about who killed his wife, why and prove his innocence. He enlists the help of his childhood friend, Cay's brother.Together Alex and Cay learn to trust each other and begin to fall in love. This is a fast paced, action paced, heart pounding adventure story of the journey from friend to lover, proving ones innocence, worth, and finding true love through difficult times.I would recommend this book especially if you enjoy fast paced, adventure and love. This book was received for the purpose of review from Pocket Galley Books and details can be found at Pocket Books,a division of Simon and Schuster, Inc and My Book Addiction and More.
I liked the characters themselves in this book and the story line itself. A woman helping an escaped convict who was convicted of killing his wife. She gets stuck having to be on the run with him. It sounds good and enticing. Alex is a interesting male character. He was strong willed and determined to clear his name. Cay was a sassy and sarcastic female who was a little too innocent when it came to the real world. The two characters passion I thought should have been jumping off the pages. However, for me that just wasn't the case. The characters were not even attracted to one another at all from the beginning. Alex wanted his name cleared and that was all he was focused on. Cay was focused on getting home and away from this ugly and smelly man. Even after he finally bathed she was not attracted to him. The characters didn't have this want from one another that you would expect. They didn't feel drawn to one another. Instead they were an annoyance to one another. It wasn't until around page 220 that they finally shared their first kiss. Even when the characters were finally drawn to one another, I never felt the connection between the two. So, if you read this book for the romance aspect, it just wasn't there for me. However, as I stated the story line was good. I enjoyed the actual story when I wasn't waiting for these two character to be together. A twist is thrown in at the end. The last 100 pages of this book are packed with suspense and will hold you attention to see what might happen. Overall, this book is descent. I never like writing anything negative, but I think this book just wasn't for me. I know this is a good author, she has many books out and is well liked. So, I will just have to pick up another.
A painter and a mysterious Scotsman? Oh yea, had to say yes to this book and I'm so glad I did! Cay is a woman who has several brothers who toughened her up a bit in her childhood and taught her to ride, however, she still lives the pampered rich girl life. She is asked to go in place of her uncle to deliver a horse and money to help an escaped prisoner, Alex. Cay goes and as things go wrong, she has to flee with the convict with the law on their trail. As they travel to the destination Cay's uncle had in mind, the two get to know each other. Cay's infectious personality has Alex laughing when he thought he would never laugh again. Alex also infects Cay with his adventurous spirit.
This isn't just a story of two people looking into each others eyes and falling so quickly the world spins. Yes, there is love. Yes, there is sexy-time, but it is one based on getting to know each other and becoming friends before they became lovers. I really enjoyed their friendship and banter. You will also enjoy finding out how the title in this book came about. No, *evil laugh* I'm not telling! :D
I give this book 4 1/2 stars and recommend it for those that love a fun story and historical romance.
I enjoyed this books. I loved the hoping around in time, the first book being around the present, the second in the past, then back again, and then back to the past. I enjoyed that. I particularly liked the books in the past, since they just seemed more rich with detail, and the stories had more to them then the modern day ones.
But I enjoyed all the books, I read them on my NY trip (all but the last one, that's why it's week 20, too) so they'll have a special place in my heart.
I loved how there was all these connections between the familys, and the kids, and decendents, it was pretty cool to see, and how the author linked everybody, it was very interesting to me!
The books were very good, and I liked them a lot, and I'd recommend then to anyone who likes one familys' journey, and all the people that they meet.
