Rate this book
Lady Sarah Whitfield becomes the newest member of English nobility when her husband, Lord James Whitfield, inherits the family estate and title. It would seem her life is one of comfort and ease, but things are not always how they appear.

After a five-year post in the navy, James has returned from war a very different man: cold, stoic, and tortured by an unresolved past. How can he carry on with a life of wedded bliss when his oldest friend in the world is starving in a French prison?

Heartbroken by the changes in her husband, who seems to have lost both his love for life and for her, Sarah leaves for London. James, haunted by the war and the loss of his wife, cannot make sense of his pain and regret. He knows one thing, however: he cannot let the woman he loves slip through his fingers. But when he receives news of his friend, he is forced to decide whether he can face the horrors of his past to save his friend and reclaim a future with Sarah or whether he must sacrifice one for the other.

This was very different from most Regency romance’s I’ve read. The love story is a rekindling of romance, and it is fraught with healing, intrigue, and a dash of Scarlet Pimpernel. Once I adjusted to the fresh take on the Regency period, I was absolutely sucked in. The side characters are charming and the human emotions real and at times heartbreaking. Loved it.

I actually started listening to Persuaded to Sea first, because I thought it was a standalone, then I went to log it and saw An Uncharted Devotion came before, so of course I had to read it. Luckily I didn't get far into chapter one of book two, so we're all good.

It's a second chance romance, in a way, but not the kind that annoys me (they break up and then meet up in the future and get back together again). Instead, we got a husband who went off to war, returning a different man, so his wife has to try to bring him back to himself and save their relationship.

It was a hard journey for sure, James was NOT having it for the entire first half of the book, but you could see him gradually opening back up again. He absolutely needed that wake up call when Sarah went to London. I love how she stood up for herself, but was still so kind and understanding.

This book WILL pull at your heartstrings, you've been warned!! Some of the action scenes reminded me of the way Arlem Hawks writes hers, so I feel like if you're a fan of her books, you'll love Amanda Taylor's as well. Now on I go to Persuaded to Sea, I'm sure it'll be just as good.

'Was marriage for love a foolish inclination?'

Historical romance is so fun to read because it lets the reader see how lucky a love match really is. Love stories are inspiring and I am here to read those kinds of stories all day, every day. Pair that beginning with the need for a second chance romance plus a little redemption arc and... yep, I'm here for ALL of that!

I cannot be convinced that second chance romance is not one of THE best tropes every to be written. Every time I read a second chance romance trope, I fall a little more in love with it!

An Uncharted Devotion is a debut novel for Amanda Taylor and I am excited to see what she writes next. There is a side character in this book that desperately needs a story-fingers crossed it's in the future for this author's readers!

I thought the characters were well thought out and well developed. Halfway through the book the pacing really intensified and I had to know how it would end! I loved the little pinch of suspense, the descriptions and the romance!

I always love finding a new promising debut author because it means more happy reading in my future!

Thanks to the author and the publisher for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Adorable. I loved it. It was everything I look for in a Regency Romance. Banter, longing, stolen glances, plus some unique history and a swoony ending. **Chef's kiss**

“I have found one need not be perfect in marriage; one need only have the courage to try.”

Fantastic debut novel by Amanda Taylor! I enjoy a story that elicits a lot of different emotions and this story certainly did. It’s a second chance romance with highs, lows, and a touch of intrigue. It also alludes to one of my favorite classics, The Scarlet Pimpernel.

James, oh James! If there is one hero that needs a good shaking, it’s Lord James Whitfield. When we first meet him, he is happily anticipating his wedding with starry eyes and great expectations. Five years later, he returns home from the navy a jaded, brooding, frankly rude man. However, the reasons for his change in personality have to do with his recent losses. He had to give up his important position in the navy after the death of his elder brother, and witnessed his best friend brutally beaten and carted off by the French, presumably dead. Suffering from PTSD and survivor’s guilt, he shuts himself off from everyone, but most especially his wife.

Lady Sarah Whitfield is my favorite character! Enduring years of loneliness, she’s excited for her husband’s return, only to find a cold, distant man so unlike the person she married. After being ignored and mistreated, she decides to leave for London. Realizing his mistakes and hoping to salvage his marriage, James follows her. Just when things look promising, he receives word his friend may still be alive. Will he risk his second chance at love for the man who was like a brother to him?

I have to admit the first half of the book I was so upset with James. Though I could understand why he felt the way he did, I had a hard time with the way he acted towards Sarah. Sarah was so incredibly patient and forgiving. I liked the way she stood up for herself and left for London when she’d had enough of his behavior. I enjoyed seeing James try to win her back and learn to let her help share his burdens. Loved the secret flower garden and stolen kisses in the library. I enjoyed how all they go through helps James gain a new appreciation for his lovely wife.

I enjoyed side characters Lord and Lady Ramsey! I would love to read more about his adventures as a sort of Scarlet Pimpernel. The second half of the book was brimming with suspenseful action as Lord Ramsey, his wife, and a few of his friends, accompany Sarah to France to find James and help rescue his friend.

Definitely recommend to Regency romance fans! Looking forward to reading more by this author. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

Fun fact, I grew up with the author’s husband. So I was very excited to read this book and it was so wonderful. My heart ached for the both of Sarah and James. Sarah was the picture of patience, waiting for James to even speak to her. I know I was at my breaking point and was proud of her for leaving for London. Lady Whitfield ended up being one of my favorite characters and she had many great moments and lines, trying to get through to her son. Lord and Lady Ramsey were also fantastic. Such wonderfully caring characters with a neat history of their own. The whole book is delightful, with quite the adventure for the characters too. I am looking forward to more books from this author.

*Happy Sigh* Y'all I was pulled into this book from the very beginning. Lord James' love and devotion for Lady Sarah was so adorable. It was fun seeing their story begin at their wedding, full of love and hope and excitement for their future.

Then the emotions start hitting as life happens and those dreams come crashing down in a way. James returns from the war having experienced loss and carrying guilt. Sarah has been lonely without her husband but has held onto her dreams and hope for when James returns and they can reunite and build their life together.

Seriously, the emotions hit! This is a debut book for Amanda Taylor and in my opinion, she did such an amazing job in writing these characters. Their struggles and dreams and loneliness and hope. The emotions were conveyed so well that it touched my heart and had me feeling these right along with the characters.

Be warned, you might want to slap James a few times throughout the book. One of my friends was reading the book after I did and she kept saying she was not happy with James. Thankfully, I was able to reassure her that he gets better and she's going to love him soon. He just needed to go on a journey and figure some things out in life. Especially remembering how much he loves Sarah!

There's plenty of angst and suspense and humor and banter and sweet and tender glances and touches. This book kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could. In fact, I read it in one sitting cause I just connected with it and fell in love with everything about it.

Content: Some talk of war and memories of war. Some minor battles. But nothing graphic. Nothing explicit. Sweet and clean romance with only kisses.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I loved how this book started out, showing the reader the affection James and Sarah had for one another at their wedding. Fast forward five years and after years of war and hard times on a ship, James isn't the man he used to be.

It was gratifying to watch James and Sarah unravel and take steps to sort out their lives. I loved their characters and especially loved Lord and Lady Ramsey. The story took a surprising turn, and while entertaining, this event moved a little too quickly for me. But honestly, I'm shocked this is a debut novel. It's well written and possessed all the necessary points to a good story.

This sweet second chance story is about a couple trying to save their marriage and fall in love again, learning to communicate and resolve their pasts and their expectations.

Content: mild war-type violence/descriptions; mild romance

This was a nice story about a wounded solider finding his way after war. It had some history of the Napoleonic war, It had some nice moments. Overall I found the story a bit sad and slow. Not much happens. He is withdrawn and cold and she is sad and lonely. It just didn't work for me. They story was ok but there just wasn't the emotion I needed to invest in the characters and care.

I was really excited to read this story. It has a very unique plot that isn't often written so I was excited to read what the author created. I really like the overall idea of this book but I struggled with loving the characters. I felt like I needed to get to know them a bit more before the end. Lady Sarah I liked at the start of the story but I proceeded to dislike as the pages flipped. I was happy with the ending but it left me wanting more. I think some things could have been fleshed out a bit in the middle and that might have held my interest. I do think there are some great scenes and I actually really loved the secondary characters. I will definitely read Amanda Taylor's next novel this one just wasn't my favorite.

An Uncharted Devotion is Amanda Taylor's debut novel and I was blown away by the depth and beauty of her writing. An Uncharted Devotion is an emotional second chance romance and deals with themes of grief and depression. I loved seeing both Sarah and James grow as they struggled to figure out how to deal with their challenges. The side characters were wonderful as well and modeled happy, healthy relationships despite trials. This is definitely a must read!

This book is seemingly two parts. First, Sarah and James Whitfield fall in love and marry just weeks before he ships out to fight Napoleon in the British Navy. He returns five year later, hardened and despondent. His older brother dies from pneumonia leaving him a title and barony he didn’t expect. In addition on his last naval mission his long time friend is betrayed, captured and presumed to be held captive in France. Wether he has PTSD, or is depressed or unhappy, he pushes away his wife and resents being home. Sarah is heart broken at being brushed aside. The second part has the Whitfields and friends launching a rescue mission in France with a nod to The Scarlet Pimpernel.

This publisher’s books are always clean which is fine. I read a lot of clean books. But where the couple is married I thought it odd that small touches and caresses were not brought into play as part of their re-wooing. Eventually there is a few shared kisses but it is a long time coming. They are so formal it is as if they were only engaged and never wed. James does get a back story which doesn’t put him in the best light. But there isn’t much reason for the reader to connect with Sarah. She comes off very sweet but what has she done for the last five years other than live with her husbands family? No reference is made to how the change is status impacts her. The rescue part of the story is more adventuresome but adds in people and places without a lot of back information.

This is an enjoyable debut novel but I wanted more depth to connect to the romantic couple. Thank you to Covenant Communications and NetGalley for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

James finally returns home to his wife after 5 long years of war. His brother has died and best friend is captured, he seems to be full of guilt and wants nothing to do with his wife. I was quite annoyed with how he treated her and wouldn’t fight for her and their marriage in the beginning. Overall, this was a sweet and clean historical regency. I look forward to more books by Amanda Taylor in the future.

For the first half of this book I wished I had never started reading it but hang in there as the second half is so much better. I loved Sarah’s character but James, not so much. Even in the end, I still was not a fan of James but he did grow on me. The Ramsey’s made the first half bearable and the last half wonderful. Theirs is a story that should have been written first. The last half makes the first half worth the read.

Thank you to the author and Covenant for my early copy. All thoughts below are my own.

After only a few weeks together, James has to leave his wife to a career on the sea. But years later, after his brother's death, he returns home to his wife, both complete strangers and James' a changed man. Now James must adjust his new life as a Lord of an estate and fix his marriage.

Captain James gives me all the brooding hero vibes in this story. I love rekindling marriage stories as well, so I was eager to jump into this book. This is a great read for sweet historical romance lovers who like second chance romance and marriage redemption stories.

This book gave me some Becoming Lady Lockwood by Jennifer Moore vibes and the Captain's Confidant by Ashtyn Newbold vibes.

Some thoughts:

I found James to be an unlikeable hero. Though his past and experience make his broodiness expected, I found his redemption arc a little flat and I needed more from his growth. Sarah is a delightful character and I loved how she stood up for herself in this story. I would probably do the same if I was her! I didn't know what happened to her all of those years her husband was at sea. I think more of her back story was needed.

The action piece in the second half was a surprise and I enjoyed going on James and Sarah's risky adventure. However, it did throw me off the plot a bit. And I felt like James was making rash decisions that were quite selfish. Again for me, not that likeable of a hero.

All in all, it's a sweet story and I look forward to seeing what she writes next.

Amanda Taylor’s debut novel, An Uncharted Devotion, is absolutely fabulous!

She took a well beloved genre and brought new life into it. This book is so much more than a love story.

James and Sarah married in a haze of love and devotion. James was able to stay with his beloved wife for a short time before returning to the Navy. Sarah went to live with James’ family to loyally wait for his return. After five years of separation, can their love survive?

Sarah has been imagining their reunion for 5 years with hope and James has been at war. War always comes with a cost. Where communication was once easy, it is now strained and almost non-existent.

The story artfully weaves the despair of war with hope for the future. It is a journey of learning how to balance the two. Some heavier topics are explored which brings richness to the characters and story. The delightful interactions, playful characters, and brilliant scenes put it in the absolutely-100%-worth-reading category!

As a history person, I loved all the references to the French Revolution! The accurate depictions and descriptions were spot on and elevated the story. So much so that music from the musical Scarlet Pimpernel got stuck in my head. 🎶

This is a fabulous debut novel and I am already looking forward to Persuaded to Sea!

⚓️ Scarlet Pimpernel vibes
⚓️ Brilliant Stand Out Moments

First, I have to say kudos to this new author for tackling such a different plot in a Regency Romance. I just had a few problems with the very slow pace and gloomy feel throughout much of the book.

I didn't like the main male character, James Whitfield in the first half of the book. Even when he starts to redeem himself, by then, it was too late for me. I know he'd been at war and seen terrible things, but it wasn't his wife's fault and she didn't deserve to be treated that way. I didn't care if he wooed Sarah back. This made me really sad too.

I had more empathy for Sarah and was hoping for her to find happiness because she was so sad in the first half of the book. She waited five years for her husband to return from war to only be treated badly and ignored. I actually was hoping she'd get with the local widower who was kind and charming. I also loved Sarah's friends Lord and Lady Ramsey. I would love a novel just based on their early life and how they got together. They were terrific characters!

I know this book had many things characters were coping with in their lives such as grief, PTSD, depression, and guilt. So many heavy things to cover in one novel. There were many things the author chose to weave into the plot: romance, intrigue, adventure, and redemption. It was a huge job and I was amazed at how well she pulled it all together at the end.

I loved the writing and would read another book by this author, especially if there is a sequel. I'd love to give these characters and this world a second chance.

Amanda Taylor's debut novel "An Uncharted Devotion" is a somber tale of a married couple finding happiness after years apart. This duo epitomizes the expression "marry in haste, repent at leisure", as their reconciliation is not at all believable.

Lovely heroine Sarah, who wistfully stares out the window, is sweet and compassionate. Husband James, on the other hand, is rude and insensitive, with a chip on his shoulder the size of a boulder. Yes, war is horrific, guilt is commonplace, yet James acts as if his, and only his, feelings are important. I never warmed up to him, and his epiphany is not the least believable. The reader should root for the estranged couple to reconcile and live happily ever after. However, THIS reader found Sarah and James to be horribly mismatched. A more detailed backstory would have helped explain their earlier tender feelings.

Taylor's writing style is enjoyable and this book is clean. Due to the unlikable male main character (he's no hero) I can't say I loved this story. However, Amanda Taylor is a promising new author and I will read more of her works.

Thanks to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for an ARC of this tale.

Can a new marriage survive war and five years apart?
James and Sarah met and it was love at first sight. They married quickly knowing that James, a second son and in the navy, would soon leave to fight in the war. Five years later with very few visits during that time, James is forced to return after the sudden death of his brother, Lord Whitfield. A captain now, James did not relish the idea of returning to England especially since his best friend, Patrick, had been captured by the French and he felt the need to rescue him. So he returns angry, sullen, withdrawn, and unapproachable. Sarah, knowing there would be an adjustment period tries to bear with his moods with patience and acceptance but then he pushes too far driving her as well as friends and his own family away. With all of his poor behavior and choices can anything be saved? Patrick? His marriage? Friends? Family? How do you start to repair the damage? Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.

Newly married and off to war doesn't make for a great foundation of marriage. James, a navy lieutenant, returns 5 year later when his eldest brother dies, He's tortured by the capture of his best friend and emotionally shutdown. They can't seem to reconnect as he continues to shut her out - she's left hurt and suffering.

The advice of her friend is to look out first for her own happiness. So she leaves with them for London.

A good army friend comes along who challenges James and the choices he's making. The rest of the story takes an unexpected turn as they get swooped into espionage.

This story communicates the tensions in reconciling a marriage, Though they are each hurting in their own way, looking after themselves first is what drives them apart in the first place, and perhaps the lesson to be learned. Clean, historical suspense.

"An Uncharted Devotion" follows the story of James Turner, a captain in the English navy, and his wife, Sarah. Everything was perfect when the two agreed to marry five years ago, but when James unexpectedly becomes the new Lord Whitfield and is forced to return home, he is beyond recognition. The war left him cold, stoic and tortured by the past. Constantly haunted by the nightmare of his only friend being captured by the French because of him, James withdraws into himself, hurting the feelings of the most important person in his life: Sarah.
When Sarah realizes that her husband is no longer the man she once knew, she leaves for London, leaving him only a letter as an explanation. At that point, James begins to really question what his priorities are and what is really worth fighting for.
Fortunately for me, James realizes that he misses Sarah too much so he follows her to London, intending to set things right with her.

Honestly, I liked this book because it was different from the other regencies. I especially liked the way Mrs. Taylor expressed her characters' feelings and struggles (they were written so realistically that I felt them too). Even if the relationship between the main characters moved slower than I would have liked, I really enjoyed the ending.< I also loved the friendship between Sarah and Margot.>

Sadly, there were a few things that I did not find pleasing, like James' behaviour towards Sarah in the first part of the book. Also, his character's development didn't feel too real.

This book is highly recommended for those who like a second chance/rekindling of romance.

I look forward to more books by Amanda Taylor in the future since I quite like her writing style ('silently wishing for a better male main character')

*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Wow, wow, wow, wooooowww. Where do I begin for this book? I'll start by saying that I do not typically read romance/historical fiction/regency type books. I wanted to begin expanding what it is I read, so I gave this book a shot. And man, it did not disappoint.

I'm a sucker for romance in fantasy books because of the build-up there typically is. Amanda Taylor delivered a graciously paced romance between an estranged husband and wife. James has been out at sea for the last 5 years for the British Navy. Upon the death of his eldest brother, James is relinquished from his Captain's duties to return to his manor and take over the title of Viscount.

Sarah, James' wife, is eagerly awaiting his return only to become heartbroken that he is distant from her and no longer seems interested in a wife. After an atrocious incident at a welcoming party for James, Sarah makes the decision to spend a season in London away from her husband. All the while, James is just unsure how to adjust to the role of head of household and husband as he strays towards darkness from the capture of his closest friend, Patrick, from his ship crew and childhood.

We go through this emotional journey from both Sarah and James' perspectives as James attempts to court his wife in order to win and earn her love and respect back. During this courting, James acquires news of Patrick's potential whereabouts, and he steals away to France in the middle of the night, leaving Sarah only a letter of farewell. Sarah bravely decides to follow her husband in his egregious attempt at saving his friend. It honestly felt like you went through all of the emotions along these two as they learned to navigate life, new changes and heartache.

I was not expecting this story to turn from a romance, courting type book into an adventure! I was left speechless the remainder of the book and couldn't stop reading, I just had to get to the end! I truly fell in love with the storytelling of this book. I'm looking forward to book two!

What a wonderfully written and beautiful story! I have heard mixed things about this book, but I really loved it! It is a little more on the sad side, but it has a happy ending. I really felt for both Sarah and James. Sarah suffers with the neglect from James. James suffers from the guilt that he has for his friend. What I love, is that both characters (after James comes to his senses) work hard for their marriage to remain intact. And then help each other. And spoiler, I loved when they got back together romantically, very well done. Overall, I thought this was a great story and I definitely recommend!

What an action packed, heart felt, heavy emotions book. I was so heartbroken for the pains that James felt, and so angry that he couldn’t see the gem that his wife was. But with the knowledge we have now of depression, PTSD, and anxiety, I had so much empathy for him. I was so happy when they were able to come together and work through his pains as a couple. The rescue mission was really exciting, and kept me on edge. A fun read, but not without its own set of feels.

4 STARS!!!

An Uncharted Devotion is the story of a troubled marriage between James and Sarah. James is to leave for his naval career and Sarah is dealing with the loss of her parents when they marry in haste, leading to a marriage built on shaky foundations. It doesn't help that James is yet to grow up when he falls in love with Sarah- he is emotionally immature and youthfully selfish. Add to that the trauma he goes through due to being a soldier and seeing war, violence, carnage.
All these issues do not a stable relationship make.
The turning point is the death of James' brother, resulting in him inheriting a viscountcy he never wanted. Now James is home to stay, and he has to deal with the loss of his brother, his desolate sister-in-law, his aggrieved mother and a wife who only wants to be loved and love him in return.
He struggles under the weight of this, and hurts his family in the process, until they finally give up on him. Its up to James now to rebuild his life as he sees fit.

What I liked - Sarah's character arc is beautifully done. She goes from trying to deal with James' immaturity to finally realizing she has to stand up for herself.

What could have been better - I wish James and Sarah had more one-on-one time together!

An Uncharted Devotion is a well-written book with a great plot, and even a bit of action and adventure!

My thanks to the author, the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC!
