Currently, more than one million military wives care for their families and their homes, often while their husbands are deployed out of state or overseas for months at a time. These women can experience a roller coaster of emotions including disappointment, loneliness, and fear. Sara Horn, the wife of a navy reservist, understands the challenges these women face. She knows how to talk about faith and spiritual truths through the filter of military life. In her encouraging book, Horn shares her personal stories, as well as wisdom and anecdotes of other wives from all branches of service. She reminds readers * God is in control. * You can have joy, no matter what. * Superwomen get grace, too. * God knows where you hurt. Horn's reliance on Scripture and confidence in God's comfort during difficult times will remind military wives they don't have to be an army of one when they are God Strong.
Sara Horn is passionate about encouraging women. Through her books, she writes to share honest life wrapped in biblical truth and challenges women to live out the same.
An award-winning writer, Sara has published numerous articles and more than six books in her decade-long career. She is also the founder of Wives of Faith, a military wives ministry she began in 2006 when her husband prepared to leave for his first deployment to Iraq as a Navy reservist.
Sara's first book, A Greater Freedom: Stories of Faith from Operation Iraqi Freedom, was written with Oliver North and received a nomination for a Gold Medallion, the highest honor given in Christian publishing.
Since then she has focused on subjects very close to her heart as both a military spouse and wife and mom including the book GOD Strong and the Bible study, Tour of Duty. Her purpose as a writer is to encourage women to seek God in every aspect of their lives, whether in the midst of a deployment or every day challenges.
Her most recent book, My So-Called Life as a Submissive Wife, released in 2012 as the sequel to her most popular book to date, My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife.
Sara has been married to the love of her life, Cliff, for fifteen years, who is currently serving in his third deployment overseas in the last six years and they have one son, Caleb, who is in seventh grade this year. They reside in the Baton Rouge area.
I can't imagine how hard it is to be a military wife, but I do know that I am extremely thankful for each wife who sacrifices for me by facing the challenges on the home front while their husbands serve the USA. I am also very thankful for Sara Horn and her excellent resource of encouragement, hope, and help in the low times for the women who do know what it means to be a military wife.
God Strong is a 238 page spiritual survival guide for women who have a husband who serves our country in any military capacity. This guide addresses real issues and challenges that a military wife faces in 10 easy-to-read chapters. Each chapter is then followed by Strength Builders which gives quick access to verses pertaining to the topic at hand as well as Strength Trainers which provide questions for thought and application of the topic. I especially liked the Survival Sisters section which gives real life stories and comfort from other women in the trenches of military wife life.
I give this book 4 stars for being a solid friend and comfort for those women facing the challenges known only to them as wives military men.

Excellent book for encouraging military wives in their walk with Christ. I have now read it twice and it's still just as excellent and helpful as the first time I read it.
I’ve been an active duty Marine wife for nearly 2 years now. We have not experienced a deployment yet and we do not have kids, so a lot of her illustrations I could not relate to. BUT, her overall premise of being God Strong was so evident and I could relate somehow to every chapter. Some sections were very convicting. As military spouses, we always tell ourselves, and are told by others, that we’re so strong. And we just need to be strong and push through. This book is a great reminder that we can’t do it on our own and we need God Strength. I gave it 4 stars because I wasn’t thrilled with the Bible version she used throughout the book. I believe it was The Message -which is a modern paraphrase of the Bible- is sometimes hard to read and I just have to “LOL” at some of the phrasing’s. I can see myself reading this again- especially if we’re ever going through a deployment! (I also was a little salty that there were no Marine wives featured in the book 🤓😂)
I’ve been meaning to read this book for awhile but I stumbled across it recently — it was very timely as we’re in the middle of a tough deployment with the end no longer in sight thanks to the virus. God Strong is a must read for all Christian military spouses! It was full of practical advice, some I knew already and other things I learned. I found God Strong encouraging and convicting as I exercise my “trust muscles” to really put my hope in God.
*I knocked off one star as I felt The Message “translation” of the Bible was overused and often that translation is a bit misleading when versus are taken out of context — nothing the author did wrong per-se, I understand the appeal of The Message but I’m very careful not to overuse it as it’s not very true to the original Biblical text and can so easily be misinterpreted.
My best friend surprised me with this book when she got me from the airport after dropping my boyfriend off at OCS. While not a wife, I read it every night these first 9 days of us being apart with no communication, and I partially attribute this book to the peace, positivity, and strength I have felt! I highlighted parts and shared them with my boyfriend in my daily letters to him. Such good, godly reminders and I love the tie-in between military and faith.
Anytime I need motivation and a foundation to lean on when I'm feeling weak, this book has never let me down! I read it before I truly knew what goes into being a strong military spouse. A few years later, and I still love it.
I thought this was good and encouraging book being a new military wife myself. Although I have no seen a deployment this will be the book I reach for again when I do face deployment. What I love the most about this book is the small testimonies from other christian military wives from all different walks of life sharing how God worked in their lives during the hard times. When I read those I felt like I was sitting across the table from other military wives and feeling like I wasn't alone in this new walk of life I've entered. I would recommend this book for every military wife no matter what branch or if your husband is gone or home.
I really enjoyed this book. Each chapter deals with a different issue that we military spouses face. The book is extremely easy to read and I turned it into my journal making notes in the margins. I felt like this book was a letter specifically written to me. I recommend every military spouse read this book!
This was a great read. A lot of it I feel like I had heard/read before, but it is always good to have reinforcement. Lots of encouragement in it, and it is probably something I will read again during a tough deployment or just in the everyday "crazy" of life. I recommend this book to military wives.
Great book! I did it as a study or reflection journal with the strength builders and questions at the end of each chapter. My husband hasn't left yet but is leaving in a month. I think I'll be re-reading it at some point while he is gone!
