Everyone in the world, including Mrs. Smythe, who is always watching me from her kitchen window, has to know when I’m having my tenants, the men I’ve known, my grown children, the neighbors. Sal came calling with his overnight bag. He brings his pajamas. He likes a lot of clothing to take off. That’s all part of it. Then he likes me to walk him out to his car in the morning when he leaves. He always reaches over, kisses me goodbye. Mrs. Smythe is always in her kitchen window no matter what time of day or night.
