Abraham: The Friend of God

Rate this book
In Abraham: The Friend of God, Dr. Dirks provides Jewish, Christian and Muslim readers with a unique and original presentation of the life of Abraham. In constructing a chronological biography of Abraham, the author integrated and synthesized information from a wide range of Judaeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, including the Bible, the Pseudepigrapha (i.e., Jubilees and the Genesis Apocryphon), the Qur'an, the authenticated sayings (Sahih Ahadith) of Prophet Muhammad, and the classic books of ancient history authored by Josephus and Al-Tabari. This integrated biographical sketch is embedded in a framework drawn from the various historical and geographical contexts dealing with different aspects of Abraham's life.

Excellent book! When I read this, the Prophet Abraham (s.a.w.) came to life. The author went through Abraham's life, and broke it down....he went through the background of what was going on in the environments Abraham was in and also speculated on how Abraham must've felt during all the trials he went through...I thoroughly enjoyed this. On a side note, I did not read the apendices, which accounting for almost half the book....I wanted to read the story, not know all the evidences the author used to draw his conclusions.

I am torn on how to rate this book. The writing style is truly uninspiring as the author writes a paragraph with certain facts, followed immediately by the proof in the holy books. It gets quite tiring to read that, with lots of information repeated several times. However, the content of the book is great and it is a well researched book, which to me is more important then the writing style. Overall I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the story of Abraham, and on how the similarities between the holy books.
