This first comprehensive presentation of this collection from the Cleveland Museum of Art, includes paintings by Monet, Degas, Renoir, Boudin and Manet among other innovative artists of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist period. Each painting is presented with descriptions detailing the artist's motifs and context of the work in the Impressionist era. The title, with its essays and over 100 colour plates, provides a thorough focus of the dramatic artistic development of the century between 1850 and 1950 through the remarkable pieces of this collection.
Good selection of works with some variety in the artists and styles. It didn't always seem to me that there was a natural flow between the chapters of the book, but the paragraph accompanying each piece provides some useful context and history on its creation.
We saw this exibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts on January 14, 2008. Great span for the collection. Favorites The Red Kerchief by Claude Monet, all of the van Gogh, and Portait of a Woman by Amadeo Modigliani. The pieces of art I was glad to see included was from the great master of the Fauvist, Henri Matisse, called Festival of Flowers 1923 and Interior with an Etruscan Vase. My heart held a beat as I frantically searched the book until I found them on pg.100 and 107. So happy to see the great reproductions. Only sad thing not to see his Woman in a Hat and Portrait of Mme Matisse.
I picked this up last night after attending the Monet to Picasso exhibit at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. The collection is on loan from the Cleveland Museum of Art; there are a few items in the book that did not travel, but otherwise it is a faithful catalog of a tremendous exhibit.
