Starmasters' Gambit

Originally written in French in 1958, Klein fits easily in as a contemporary of English-language writers like Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, although I dare say there is a sense of the French élan here, comparatively. It is very Clarke-like, or, in fact, anticipates some Clarke, with its grand designs of the Universe with such ideas as the Masters—think Clarke's monolith in 2001 (1968) or ancient spaceship in Rendezvous With Rama (1973). Also, the main protagonist, Jerg Algan, very much resembles the kind of protagonist Alfred Bester favored with such classics as The Demolished Man (1953) and The Stars My Destination (1956), probably the most immediate influences on this. Algan comes from the Old Earth, an anachronism in a time of disorienting, long-time space colonization, pressed into service by a near (if not, total) totalitarian Human Empire. As a result, he represents a rebellious, transgressive sub-messianic individual like Bester's.
While the conceit that drives the moment of transforming humanity is a little trite (think the cover art plus drugs), the best parts of this pulpy delight are the extreme sense of ennui (another French word for you) that covers the whole narrative. There is Algan's both sense of having lost a kind of childhood from his Old Earth days and his weariness of endless space travel; there is the sense of stagnation and alienation of the Empire's ideology itself; and there is a wonderfully depressing characterization of the long term effects of deep space time isolating not only people but whole planets and societies from one another. This reaches its apex when Algan, on a mission to find the titular "Starmasters", voyages to an extreme outpost of the known Empire. The planet itself is worthy of the kind of baroque fashioning that Clark Ashton Smith and his later inheritor, Jack Vance, were so great at depicting. All in all, the climax and concept may be charmingly quaint and very much of its time, but the vibe is a delight.

Idea was simple but very interesting. A man who loves his planet and his life not seeking for something more in the stars but forced to explore signing a contract by a trick getting him high. I found fascinating him being driven by a pure hate to people above him and always asking questions no one else did. It makes his character being real. I enjoyed his travel through the space and concept of it being a chessboard reavling itself throug the story. Approach of time being depending on where he traveled was amazing and I also found the the feeling of being claustrophobic and trapped in the big space of universe being fascinating. I was surprised when Nogaro turned to be one of the people who rule the galaxy and whole concept of being immortal. And also the end was great the master being stars and describing how lonely they are and humans being robots.
Thoughts of the main character were philosophical and made me think about existing and how small we are in the big organism that universe is.

Picked a used paperback copy of this up on a whim a few years ago but only just now getting around to reading it. It's pretty solid classic sci-fi, one that centers around one Earthling cracking the code of the true masters of the universe and space travel via drugs, chess and time travel. It's pretty inspired and a quick read.

A bit rushed. A bit lacking in the characterization department, Maybe even a bit naïve.
But, as many Gerard Klein books, it's full of interesting locations, ideas and hope. This makes me give it a "really liked it" rating ;)

Just my opinion. Jumped too much into philosophy and maybe the translation wasn’t well done? Good premise I thought, but kept going into side roads that were confusing.

its story is pretty shallow. the author had hastened the events, as if eager to finish the book as soon as possible. complete disappointment
