Oliver Smith is a certified nerd. He’s a computer genius who would rather spend his time programming than at a football game. But when he sees pretty little Leah Peterson cheering her heart out on the football field during halftime, he can’t tear his eyes away from her. His fascination with her quickly turns to obsession until he stalks her both online and off.
Leah is bright and bubbly and popular, and there’s no way he’ll ever be able to get close to her. A beauty like her doesn’t belong with a nerd like him.
But when Leah starts failing college algebra, Oliver can be her tutor—if nothing more.
USA Today bestselling author Emma Bray writes intense, steamy romances with possessive alpha males who’ll stop at nothing to claim the women they want. Emma’s instalove stories are filled with heat, passion and happily ever afters.
cw: internalized misogyny and slut shaming (not challenged), gender essential language, stalking
I had higher hopes for this because I loveee a nerd hero… but I was annoyed by so many things in the story. First, the hero gives us a “not like other girls” spiel about the heroine because she’s a cheerleader, but she’s not like other cheerleaders because she’s not “slutty”. As if being promiscuous is somehow wrong. And then other stuff like how she’s also so different because she eats a lot unlike other girls. Come on now…be for real. I had to roll my eyes. And the last thing…she gives up a really lucrative cheerleading offer and instead works on something (I don’t even remember what) for the hero. It felt so anti-feminist and like a slap to the face. It felt like the author was saying that cheerleading is not something of value and more like something the heroine had to give up to be deemed valuable as a woman. I’m sure there’s a lot more where that came from but I just felt icky reading this. And that’s not something I like feeling when I’m reading romance.
Oliver Smith is a straight-up nerd who would rather spend his time indoors at the computer but his friend tells him to come to the game and, that's when he sees Leah he knows right there that he has to know everything about her and make her his.
all up for a short treat but all I got was short dick energy
tw: misogyny, stalking
good god this male POV was awful the amount of narcissist energy was being emitted, I wonder how his roommate lived with this creature. my boy, get a life, and therapy
my my the female POV is just - "He might identify as a nerd, but he's definitely the leader of the entire nerd population, if that’s the case." girl wha—
paw, she says his hands are paws LMAOOOOO
THE MMC MAKES ME WANT TO LEARN CODING AND BEAT HIM, WHILE HE WALLOWS IN HIS OWN MISERY ABOUT HOW HE LOST TO A GIRL WHO EATS ANYTHING AND DANCES LIKE A DRUNKARD.
Okay, I read this one out of recommendation (thanks @padmaja !!) but likely would have gotten around to reading it anyway because I'm slowly becoming obsessed with the dynamics Emma Bray considers to be good relationships. Spoiler, it's fucking wild every single time.
All the terrible comments/observations made by the FMC that I was made aware of before reading were just as jarring in the moment as if I'd never heard of them.
This loose-cannon, Leah (FMC), does at one point say (earnestly) "He might identify as a nerd, but he's definitely the leader of the entire nerd population, if that’s the case." This is totally based off appearance and stature, and has nothing to do with any leadership skills or actual knowledge of his academic capabilities. It's off-the-cuff observations like that that keep me coming back to Emma Bray books; the FMCs are mushy, sex-deprived wildcards and the MMCs are obsessed 'horndogs' that have interactions that make me actively groan and roll my eyes.
Another incredible quote that I re-read three seperate times justr to try and recover from the initial trauma, "I lean across the table and kiss Leah for at least the tenth time tonight, my tongue flicking out to lick the ketchup off the corner of her mouth." KETCHUP!? You wanted ketchup-flavoured kisses? Are you well, Oliver????
Anyway this was a great short read and had me laughing my ass off. They say that every original thought has been said already, and every story has been told before, then you read and Emma Bray book and fly off the handle for an hour.
73 procent. Hacken?? Wtf
Oliver becomes instantly obsessed with Leah the very first time he lays eyes on her. She a cute little cheerleader and he's what everyone considers a nerd! Can these two have a HEA?
Leah and Oliver. Oliver may be a nerd but he is built like an athlete. Leah is head cheerleader. Oliver becomes her math tutor. Read the book for the rest of the story.
I absolutely loved this one! I adore a nerd hero and a feisty heroine and this had both! I also loved that even tho the heroine was a cheerleader she made it a point that she wasn’t the kind of female to open up her legs and just let any dude plow her and use her like a dirty gym sock. She had integrity and virtue and self-respect and I loved it.
The hero was sweet but knew what he wanted, the heroine, and went after her. I love an obsessed, OTT hero and he was awesome. They had great chemistry and their story brought the swoon!
Safe. Hero’s past isn’t mentioned, but he’s not a manwhore. Heroine is a virgin, belongs only to her hero. No others, no cheating or sharing or abuse. HEA with epilogue
What an adorable and cute book!... The nerd and the cheerleader.
Oliver is a complete all-rounder!... He is a nerd, highly intelligent, a computer genius, already developing his own softwares and has his future already set. Not to mention, he is built like a line-backer. It’s the best of both worlds, really. *wink* He at a football game with his friend, when his eyes fall on Lacey cheerleading during half-time, and he just cannot stop looking and coveting. He knows she is his future.
”My chest swells with a surge of protectiveness. I feel complete. She's my other half, and I'll do anything for her. My Leah.”
And Oliver will do just about anything to put himself in her path, starting with being her tutor, to being her cheerleader in life and being whatever else she needs him to be.
The book is super short, but the steamy scenes are oh-so-yummy, complete with dirty talk!... It’s a quick ‘in-between’ kind of book.
