baking cakes for kaoruko?? a beach episode?? straightforward irl romantic confession?? rintaro COOKED

honorable mention to subaru’s growth and her being rlly vulnerable, it was so sweet to see them all understanding of her discomfort and i am so shipping her with quiet friend i cannot remember the name bcs i literally woke up like 30 mins ago (and i am only optimal after 1h30 after waking up).

This might be the quintessential volume of this series, honestly, as it carries its cozy vibe into the summer months and brings the gang to the beach, amidst burgeoning feelings and all that good stuff.

It was kind of welcome to see that this didn’t go the obvious route with the beach trip (you know the one). This story has definite depth to it, but it’s entirely wholesome and makes for an easy recommend for all tastes.

Speaking of tastes, Kaoruko’s birthday rolls around and that means Rintaro’s cake is ready to take centre stage. Between his cake and Kaoruko’s reaction, this is about as big a declaration as comes later in the volume. They’re so cute when they stumble over one another and their feelings.

Having Rintaro’s mom and dad front and centre, full of pride over the changes Rintaro has made in his life, is pretty touching. They’ve clearly been worried and you can tell how relieved they are to see what he’s becoming.

The beach trip reunites our young cast and, if I have a major complaint, it’s basically that I recognize these people but do not remember them at all. Minus Subaru, naturally, who remains a standout.

Seeing her deal with her past trauma and how it’s keeping her apart from everybody is great drama. It’s not that the response from the guys isn’t exactly what you’d think, it is, but some people just need to hear those things.

And don’t think I don’t notice you setting up a potential second couple amidst all that, manga. I’m on to you. At any rate, Subaru’s continued growth has been probably my favourite part of the story anyway, so more is good. She’s really the most nuanced member of the cast and respect for that writing.

Naturally, fireworks are an excellent excuse for fireworks, and Rintaro finally says the quiet part loud, but quietly. Yet he’s overheard and he knows it and that makes him super awkward because bad self-esteem is the worst.

I enjoyed pretty much every bit of this next section, from the adorable blushing (Kaoruko has excellent ‘poof’ game) to the way Kaoruko won’t quite let Rintaro apologize for what he said. She’s really clever at this and I think that aspect of her personality is very fun. The way we leave this volume is entirely down to her design and that was pretty great.

It’s a high standard for an already solid manga, honestly. It touches on pretty much everything you want it to and does it really well. Yeah, I wish I had a bit more recollection of the male cast, but small ding for something that has been a real treat.

4.5 stars - rounded up because I think it had a lot to offer anybody with even passing interest in the genre. Not the most original, but it has clever bits sprinkled throughout that definitely keep it more than a little above average.

Ah, I’ve waited for this. It’s the summer break, and Rintaro and Kaoruko and their friends are free to have fun time together. Well, Kaoruko and Subaru have to study with other girls, and Rintaro wants to help his father at the patisserie, but there’s time for fun too.

First, there’s Kaoruko’s birthday, for which Rintaro spent endless hours learning to bake. He’s anxious that she won’t like it, but of course she does. He even promises to bake her another cake.

Then the group head for a day in the beach. Everyone is excited, but Subaru can’t enjoy herself. She fears she’s bringing down the fun, but she gathers courage to confess that because of a childhood trauma (we don’t learn what kind), she can’t feel comfortable around men. But she likes these boys and wants to be their friend. Everyone is accepting of her confession and she can relax.

And then, finally, Rintaro confesses to Kaoruko, causing both of them confusion and embarrassment. But Rintaro feels relief too, having got it out. Annoyingly, the volume ends before they can talk things out. But I’m sure it’ll go well.

This was another feel-good, happy-making volume. Rintaro’s parents were so happy that he’s started to smile, and Subaru opening up was good to see. Even Saku got over his grumpy self for a moment. And Kaoruko was her cheery self, making everyone happy. Eagerly waiting for the next volume.

Still so extremely cute. I don't mind a slow burn as long as it keeps a good consistent pace of forward progress and I am so pleased to see that after 5 books it hasn't failed me yet. All of the character are so incredibly sweet and genuine I feel like im going to get a cavity from simply reading each volume.

Watching Subaru break out of her shell and really let herself live in the moment was so rewarding. That smile was like genuinely, the happiest we’ve ever seen her, made my heart swell. She’s gone from being closed-off to actually letting herself be part of the group and now she feels like she truly belongs. AND the way things are starting to click between her and Saku? Oh, I see it coming. The quiet looks, the subtle connection aaaaaa it’s all there.

That scene at the beach with Rintaro’s “I love you” was already so soft and beautiful but what made it unforgettable was what happened afterward. Instead of getting flustered or brushing it off, he called Kaoruko and told her he wanted to talk about it in person. That’s not just romantic, that’s grown-up, emotionally mature behavior. He’s not afraid of his feelings, he’s not scared to stand by them, he wanted to make sure she knew exactly where his heart was. It’s such a clear reflection of how well he was raised and it makes me love him even more.

Gaaah! So cute. Birthday cakes, fireworks, confessions and summer festivals. This volume has it all. The story keeps moving along and it always leaves me wanting more! 😩 I especially loved the beach scene where Subaru feels like she’s not supposed to be there but everyone reassured her that she’s very much wanted and that they all are her friend. So good and heartfelt that it’s a bit of a teary moment. Now I have to wait for vol 6. 😭

I love the group dynamic! And we finally get the friendship backstory!!! (Plus more Saku x Subaru haha)

Also, the part where Rintaro thanks his dad, and his dad goes to speak to Kyoko was so sweet! We haven’t seen too much of the dad, and yet the scene of the parents tearing up was so touching and beautifully drawn.

Hoping that the anime adaptation for this will give justice to the story and the characters! I really love how the story revolves on all of them and not just on the romance-comedy aspect. You can truly see how the creator loves their work. What an amazing coming-of-age manga.
