Do you have any elderly aunt, grandmom or any other member in your family who would tell you stories from the Indian Mythologies? . This book from @penguinsters by Reeja Radhakrishnan and illustrated by Megha Punater will then take you straight back to one winter afternoon when you open mouthedly heard these tales and wondered at it all! . This book very comprehesively included tales focusing on animals and birds not just from the epics Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Jataka tales but also those of Dasavatar, Durga Strotra, Sri Krishna and of other great religious leaders like Mahavir! Its very well researched, and divided into two distinct sections ( the pages bear different shades too) this surprised me with stories that are rare! There were some connections that even I didnot know of and was glad to learn of! . Beautifully and realistically illustrated there are some very popular stories like that of Mahisasur bandh, the golden deer imagery in Ramayana used to capture Sita, the samudra manthan amongst others, there are some gems like that of Garuda and Bheem meeting Hanuman! . An apt book to be read out and passed on to children ( I fear in this age of technology and as a modern woman I myself am losing out to these tales) so that they are not lost - this book needs a prominent space in your hearts and shelves! . I had to do a reel to showcass it, because a photo cant do justice to it! .
Mythology and art meets children's literature in this beautiful rendition by Reeja Radhakrishnan and Megha Punater. This book is as good to read as it is to behold. The stories are well-researched yet perfect for young readers.
This book gave me a great opportunity to throwback to the tales I grew up on. From Rohanta's noble words to Jaya-Viajay's curse, the stories brought back some fond memories with them. The illustrations were also amazing, and I can't say I didn't spend several minutes examining each piece and trying to guess the methods used to bring them to life.
This book is definitely a great fit for young readers, but as an adult and a fan of myths, I enjoyed it immensely. And as adults one can greatly appreciate the method of narration and the art style. The little details that connect a story with another is also exciting, as it truly captures the essence of Indian myths - separate yet deeply connected.
As the first complete read of 2023, this book was wonderful and fulfilling, with a dash of nostalgia.
This book very thoroughly includes stories about animals and birds from the epics Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Jataka tales as well as from Dasavatar, Durga Strotra, Sri Krishna, and other famous religious figures like Mahavir! I was startled by the uncommon stories in this book because it is really well-researched and broken into two parts (the pages also have various tones). There were several links that even I was unaware of, so I was happy to find out about them.
Some extremely well-known tales, such that of the Mahisasur Bandh, the golden deer imagery used to seize Sita in the Ramayana, and the Samudra Manthan, are exquisitely and vividly drawn. There are also some real gems, like the story of Garuda and Bheem encountering Hanuman.
Even though I'm an adult and a huge fan of myths, I thought this book was fantastic for young readers. And grownups can highly appreciate the narrative technique and artistic flair. The tiny details that tie one narrative to another are especially fascinating because they perfectly depict the unique yet interconnected nature of Indian myths.
This book was delightful and rewarding, with a touch of nostalgia, as the first thorough read of 2023.
