After enjoying the humanity and skillful narrative crafting shown in The Bray And Enniskerry Railway, I was quickly excited to discover what else this author had covered and discovered to my delight a book by him on an old hobby horse of mine (enclosures) specifically concerning my neck of the woods down in Kilmacanogue/Wicklow. I knew I had to check it out, and though it was a pain to get ahold of I can now offer my full thoughts.
Honestly? This was just alright. I do appreciate being catered to in my niche ways, and there are specific stories told in respect of the raw facts and dates and events that populated the collapse of this form of feudal tenure in these areas, however it felt like in splitting itself across three examples and dedicating such little space to them (the whole book is only 62 pages) it feels like this is just an introduction or primer, rather than a full story as BER was.
It did, in fairness, do what it said it would do, and made some interesting historiographical points about the differing means and purposes enclosures were undertaken by and served. I’m glad I read it, and I’m glad I have a copy, but it’s a pity it couldn’t be more.
