About the author

Matei Călinescu was a Romanian literary critic and professor of comparative literature at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana.
He attended the Ion Luca Caragiale High School in Bucharest, taking his diploma in 1952. He emigrated from Romania to the United States in 1973. Emeritus Professor at Indiana University. He lived with his wife in Bloomington, Indiana.

Exemplary scholarship, erudite without being recondite, informative and illuminating. Calinescu surveys the terrain without a touch of cant to mar the purview, and the etymological parameters (Calinescu searches historical texts for actual uses of the words) provide useful boundary lines without in the least limiting the exploration of the concepts.
