I must disclose that I met the author, Lisa Shusterman, a few years ago. At the time, Lisa had taken charge of the school book fair; as one of her volunteers, I can testify that she is fearless in both planning and execution.
Fearlessness, I think, is what this book is really all about. Lisa Shusterman had a dream of traveling the world, and she made that dream a reality, for herself, her husband, and their two lucky daughters. Perhaps a few of the nuts- and-bolts details in this practical account of travel considerations may be obsolete by the time I finish writing this review, as factors in travel fluctuate nearly as quickly as currency. What endures is a scrupulously honest account of sheer willpower, as our narrator tries to balance a practical aversion to risk with a lively openness to the unknown.
This is a how-to book. A book about how to be brave. It is best to charge ahead after you've thoroughly investigated the landscape. Reading this book will help you know most of what you need to know before you enter the unknown. Lisa states that she will consider this book a success if she convinces one person to follow their dreams. I'm in. How about you?

This has lots of great tips for planning a major trip. I have read many (all?) of the books about families taking a year off. This and 360 longitude are standouts for practicality. I do wish this one had a more about what they actually did on their trip. (She includes some of their blog postings- wish there were a few more).

This book is great if you are serious about traveling around the world for a year. Detailed, practical information that I would not have thought of. This is not a travelogue, you definitely need to pair it with other books (one year off, 360 degrees longitude). This is the reality side of the dream!
