Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince: A 52 brilliant ideas interpretation

Rate this book
Machiavelli based The Prince on his profound understanding of human nature. This short treatise on Renaissance statecraft and power has been controversial and inspiring since its first publication nearly 500 years ago. Machiavelli's analysis of the ways men seize, retain, and lose power represented the first exposé of realpolitik and it has been used ever since as a handbook for manipulating events to one's own advantage. Here, Machiavelli's text is interpreted for the modern day world of business. Tim Phillips's interpretation of Machiavelli's work is not a substitute for the original; its purpose is simply to illustrate the timeless nature of Machiavelli's insights by bringing them to life through modern business and political case studies. This brilliant interpretation of The Prince is an entertaining accompaniment to one of the most famous books ever written.

A book of quotations would have been better. Don't waste your time with this commentary, read the original. Tim reinvents the word 'globe's in this.

Good interpretations, though I think using this as a springboard to the original work will be even more insightful.

1. The crux of the Prince is that you have to be prepared to accept that while it's good to be good, the people who know get stuff done in life know when to break the rules of conventional behaviour.
Reading the Prince asks you :What do you really want to achieve and how do you choose to achieve it?

2. See the situation as it is, and decide accordingly. Sometimes there's no happy ending, just the lesser of two evils.

7. Support weaker neighbours, they're far more likely to help you in return, and be grateful.

9. The reason why so many mergers are failures is that they weren't integrated aggressively or quickly enough. That leaves people hankering for the old days.

11. When you want to change things up, don't expect those doing well under the old regime to support you. Either empower your supporters, or knock some heads together.

15. If you can do the dirty work all at once, you can quickly get started on doing more generous things. Make sure it is carried out swiftly and tactfully..

16. The biggest mistake as a boss is to curry favour too assiduously with QIPs (Quite important people) i.e. middle managers. You end up 'surrounded by men who consider themselves your equal, and then you cannot do with them as you wish.'

18. If you want the freedom to make big calls, make sure the small things are taken care of.

25. We can only prepare for a disaster when there isn't a disaster happening, but we don't. It is more comfortable to hope for the best instead.

30. The positive respect you inspire should be through irrevocable acts. When your word is final people won't hanker for the old days so much.

31. Machiavellian cruelty goes over better if it's done according to clearly stated rules and standards. That way it won't be perceived as random and unexpected.

36. The best public relations isn't fiction, it's selective reporting of the truth, designed to highlight your virtues and distract attention from your weaknesses. It doesn't judge the morality of what it is promoting, only cares about achieving and preserving power for the people it serves.

37. Somebody's going to control the story, might as well be you. If there is no plan to handle communications in a crisis, you're going to handle it badly.

42. All courses of action involve risks, so assess the dangers, and act accordingly (risk management, not avoidance)

45. The only way to protect yourself from flattery is to let it be known that the truth does not offend you. This only works if you retain respect, meaning that people should speak freely to you when asked, and only when.

50. To cut luck out of the equation, better to act fast and impetuously, than to wait till the moment has passed, even if you're sometimes wrong.

51. Speak plainly, and solve problems.

"Love is a bond of gratitude which is easily trumped by self-interest"

After reading the original the prince by machiavelli, Tim somehow relates the lesson to the life of today living in the corporate world.

It is true that we live in a dog eat dog world, and this "self help" book can give you a head start on how to climb the corporate ladder...

It speaks the truth, but only for those people who are genuinely productive.

This is the second of this type of book I have bought accidentally at a book fair not noticing the small text down the bottom saying it is not the original. I felt this one was a bit overly repetitive and some of the comparisons through didnt really work.
