The title alone may have you raising your eyes as the word has negative connotations. Before the story even begins, the author gives her own definition of the word bastard: "an individual who refuses to be fathered, i.e. a person who refuses the love and discipline of the caregiver. Likewise, an individual refusing to give love and discipline to those whom they are to oversee is also a bastard."
In BASTARDS by Avah LaReaux, we are introduced to the young Marcus Clayton. As a child he lived in the exclusive Bradhurst community, where everyone knew one another and Marcus lived right next door to his grandparents. The Claytons are a close knit family. Marcus spends more time at his grandfather's house than he does his own. His grandfather, Poppa C, loves and treats Marcus as if Marcus is his son and not his grandson. Obviously Marcus is the favorite and everyone is well aware of this. He is the spitting image of his grandfather and they both are players in every sense of the word.
Poppa C has always had a thing for the ladies. When he meets Ameena Sharif, the aunt of one of Marcus' friends, Poppa C has an instant attraction to the younger woman. When Ameena discovers that she is pregnant, she wrestles with the question whether or not to tell Poppa C, considering the fact that he is much older than she and is married with his own family. Ameena's decision will ultimately affect more lives than she could ever realize.
BASTARDS was an exceptional story. It’s a page turner that will have you engrossed from the first to last page. Ms. LaReaux does an excellent job in weaving a true-to-life tale of Marcus Clayton. If you have been following this series, WHAT'S DONE IN THE DARK and SONG OF THE SIREN, you would swear that you know Marcus. Ms. LaReaux took his character and told his life story from a youngin' to an adult with such ease. Ms. LaReaux is a masterful storyteller, an author not to be slept on!
