Author Ashley Vaughn deserves nothing less, according to Vic, the unwilling star of Ashley’s latest erotic best seller. Ashley spends her life writing erotic romance and her nights alone. When a sexy butch sweeps her off her feet following a book signing, she’s too afraid to believe in the miracle of love at first sight to take a chance. Instead, she writes about it.
Victoria Hadley, chef and restaurateur, believes she’s found the woman of her dreams. Until she discovers Ms. Right has used their night of passion to further her career. Bent on revenge, she lures Ashley into a trap. But is the trap about to snare her too?
Larkin Rose lives in a “blink and you’ve missed it” town in the beautiful state of South Carolina with her partner, Rose (hence the pen name). Her writing career began some years ago when the voices in her head wouldn’t stop their constant chatter. After ruling out multiple personalities, and hitting the keyboard, a writer was born. The voices continue. The clatter of keys continues. The birth of erotic creations carries on.
I took a chance on this book because I liked the other Larkin Rose books very much. Lately i'm using my new saying pretty often: Trust the author more than you trust reviews. Some authors can fall short every once in a while, but if you like everything else by an author, it's usually a safe bet to ignore the occasional negative review. This book for example; some reviewers didn't like the vulgarity or graphic sex. If that will offend you, don't get this book. But if you have read other stuff by this author and liked it, you should like this one too. I didn't like it as much as Kiss the Rain, but the story was still very interesting. The characters were easy to relate to and the story was even able to wrench a few misty eyed moments from me. And of course, as with all her books, this one was very hot and steamy.
Ashley Vaughn, an author, meets Victoria Hadley, a chef and restauranteur, at her author reading. They hit it off immediately but when Victoria finds out Ashley uses their night together in her book to further her career, Victoria is set out for revenge.
I thought that the book started off well and had sizzling intimate scenes. I believed in that Victoria and Ashley had good chemistry together.
Both characters are likeable, but each have their certain faults. For instance, I didn't like that Victoria's character wanted revenge so much although I understood her reason why for wanting it so badly.
I probably should have paid more attention to the description, because I didn't like Vic at all and kind of thought her behaviour was reprehensible. I get why she did it, but I almost didn't finish the book when she spends months building a relationship just to get her revenge.

Ashley is a new author with one erotic short story in an anthology and hopes to get a contract for a novel. At a reading she meets Vic, a butch who locks eyes with her and takes her out for a night to remember. But Ashley gets cold feet and runs from Vic's bed, ignoring the pleading emails Vic sends. When Ashley's novel is finally published, Vic reads it only to find that it's the exact story of their night together. Vic feels exposed and used and vows to get revenge. This sets off an intense power play between the two.
The sex scenes are pretty good, though somewhat repetitive. I appreciated the butch-femme dynamic, which isn't too present in a lot of lesbian fiction. Some of the plot was far-fetched and for an erotic romance there was a bit too much description of internal angst on the part of both characters. While the dialogue between the two MCs felt realistic, the banter between Ashley and her best friend, Caprice, was a bit too cute and tiresome.
A good read if you're looking for a hot and sweaty erotic romance. Rose writes erotica very well - pages and pages that all but set off the fire alarm in my house. Romance is possibly not the right word for this - hate is a major plot driver. It definitely makes the passion burn hotter, but I sometimes felt that Vic was almost overwhelmed by her emotions. Sure, Ashley was an ass for ghosting her and using their night as fodder for her book - but she freaked and ran away and actually felt bad about it. Vic's revenge was much more mercenary and calculated. The sex must have been phenomenal (yeah ... Rose made that abundantly clear) as I don't know how anyone could forgiver Vic. But this is fiction and it is erotica and it does run very hot - so if you don't pattern your own behaviour after Vic (at least outside the sheets) then enjoy.
Well, Rose did it again. She created a character that I love to hate. Another hot story with steamy sex and an equally hot butch. Rose sure can make me swoon for those big hearted, sexy butches, but damn, those femmes. I just wanna throttle them.
Typical lovely love story. Enough in each chapter to keep you wanting more. It might have been to sappy for some, but for me it was exact as I wanted it to be.
This story possibly takes the ultimate award in having two people completely misconstrue each other. Plus, they never talk about it. Of course, with the super sizzling action between the sheets, on the staircase, in the washroom, who really has time to discuss anything? Brilliant, engaging, funny, tearful, and loaded with love, I was beguiled from the very beginning. Hats off to Larkin Rose, another Bold Strokes Books author, for masterminding this marvelous book.
Ashley Vaughn, a wannabe author, needs to reconstruct her audience as bald folks with bright red clown noses before she reads to them. She doesn’t appear or act as if she is so nervous, but good performances happen under the most curious circumstances using any tactic available. At this reading, she is additionally knocked off her pins by a woman in the shadows at the back whose penetrating eyes cut right through her. The key characters meet! The roller coaster ride has just begun.
Victoria Hadley, owner and accomplished chef of a 5 star restaurant, wanted to meet Ashley. She wants to do much, much more to Ashley, but all things must start somewhere. This opening scene in the bookstore was so deliciously perfect, I was not surprised at how intense and scintillating the rest of the book was. Even when things were going awry, the heat and tumult roaring within the main gals nearly overwhelmed me. Either Ashley or Victoria might have spoken their hearts and minds earlier. All things could have gone well, but then there would have been no book to read.
My gut wrenched over and over as these two wrestled with themselves and their completely twisted innards. However, that was also one of the delightful charms of this ‘Vapor’, also the title of Ashley’s first published book and her second major strike against Vic. These women both needed to have their ass spanked to a brilliant red, however they did a pretty good number on themselves without my assistance. This is such a winner on so many levels I hope no one misses it!

I do not usually read F/F romance, just not my preference. However, I have a read a few novels with F/F subplots, mostly in the science fiction field. This is a standard romance. The author takes her time in building out the meeting between the two protagonists – so the reader gets to know them as they get to know each other without the "love at first sight, committed lovers by the second glance" problem. It’s slow and seductive. The author also uses small details to make world seem real, and her writing is evocative. Ashley “fought with several outfits” before deciding what to wear on her date. Most women can relate to this –whether gay or straight! I also like how the story alternated between Ashley and Victoria – letting me into the mind of each woman. The sex scenes here are frequent and varied. The author doesn’t coast using the same clichéd words in every encounter, but I too felt the constant profanity distracted from the story. I also thought the idea of one of the women being an erotic writer and using her own encounter as inspiration for her writing was an interesting story device. It was cleverly done and built angst into the story.
Overall, I found this a quick read but not up to the quality of romance writers like Radclyffe or fiction that happens to have an F/F romantic subplot.
Yesterday I went and re-read Vapor, one of the author's earlier works. It's still not my favourite of hers, mostly because of the dynamics of the conflict between the two leads. A good choice if you're looking for angsty sex and dirty talk. If you haven't read anything from this author, I'd recommend Visions or Kiss the Rain instead.
