Waves of terror swept me as I huddled, cold and wet at the water's edge. Over and over, the accident haunted me. The bridge - wet, slippery, so narrow. And then the fog - thick, condensing, coming from behind, then covering the windshield. Smothering me, blinding me. Oh, God, where's the railing? Then blackness... and icy water lapping, lapping. The hunters who found me on the shore were puzzled. How had I escaped? My car was still under water, locked. I knew no answers, only that I must go on to the dark house I would use as a hunting lodge, to welcome the strong young men who would come as hunters and might stay as lovers.

Sheba is impulsive, unconstrained by convention, and fond of men. When she comes into a small amount of money, she decides on a lark that she wants to purchase an old house—sight unseen—and turn it into a hunting lodge. She talks two sisters and her roommate Donna—her good friends—into quitting their jobs and coming to live and work with her. Driving close to the house for the first time she has to cross a bridge, and a fog moves in. Swerving, she drops into the water. The next morning she is found alive and well at the side of the bridge. But, how could this be, when the car is still underwater with all the doors locked? As Sheba, Donna and the others start trying to build up the hunting lodge business, strange things occur, and the old house itself begins to feel ominous. This book, a Gothic Romance, was the fourth published book from Ruby Jean Jensen, and preceded her long run in the Horror genre.
An author local to Northwest Arkansas, I wasn’t expecting much for a pulp fiction paranormal novel from the 1970s, but it was extremely readable and thrilling.
