I don’t even remember how and when I came upon this book. The premise of a 27 yrs. old h masquerading as a 17 yrs. old, to go to her dead teenage sister’s school in order to get some answers about her death is not something that would overly excite me. So I left off reading it for long.
But the book surprises with its easy flow, wit and even the usual high school staples and antics were absorbing. All the h wanted was to prove for her guilt ridden parents’ sake was that her sister had not been suicidal and that it could have been an accidental death. But what she unwittingly stumbles upon is something much more sinister. This school is in a wealthy posh area of Palm Cove, Miami with stereotypical rich uncaring kids but then there are some who have gone from an average callousness to another level.
The fun part of an adult masquerading as a teen and conquering the old formidable bastion of high school mixes well with the slow unraveling of a disturbing secret.
The h who has worked selflessly with Peace Corps all over the world, especially in war ravaged and famine-hit countries makes a startling contrast to the self-serving ways of these kids.
But she’s no Drew Barrymore from ‘Never Been Kissed’. She goes about with the self-assuredness of an adult (that she is) who actually doesn’t care about fitting in and acceptance, which conversely makes her popular. The hottest jock in school starts pursuing her, the cheerleaders envy her and the misfits look up to her.
And adding to the sweet note is the reciprocated attraction she feels for the hot Civics teacher. The very upright Mr. Doug Lacayo is running scared thinking himself a newly converted pervert, who not only enjoys the one-on-one heated debates with the new student but also can’t get her out of his mind 24x7. So much so, this unethical attraction as well as ennui with this unfulfilling job teaching spoilt kids, makes him think of quitting. And she keeps jerking his chain and having fun at his expense. So he is quite relieved when he learns that ‘Lolita’ is really ‘the Avenger out of Africa'.

Quirky , flirty , naughty romance but with a dark social issue at the backdrop. On the face of it, the novel is a simple masquerade which reminded me of the rom-com "Never been kissed".
The girl is a 27 year old, working in Ethiopia on a peace mission. She pretends to be a 17 year old, comes to Florida and joins her younger sister's high school to investigate her sister's alleged tragic suicide. The sister was too happy in life to be suicidal was her hunch.
But very soon, her main motive to remain in school changed from avenging her sister to mooning over her dishy civics teacher ! And the poor teacher had it bad. He was attracted to a student. He could arrested or the very least get fired from his job for this !
The fun our heroine has at his discomfort when she comes on strong to him is fun to read. Its a cute college romance written with adults in mind.
Playful teasing at the surface , with a disturbing issue of social violence at the background. Good overall spicy stuff. But not high on sexual quotient. Quite understandable. As long as he thinks she is a teenager, he obviously cannot give vent to his desires !!
I also liked the hero - a normal school teacher , cute and not the macho alpha-male type who comes prowling in our average M&B. This guy has his fears, apprehensions, secret desires and weaknesses. He doesn't like sports and prefers wholesome married life to hitting the dating circuit all the time. Sounds like my kind of man :)
