This novel is the second one in Connealy's Sophie's Daughters trilogy, focusing on the McClellan family's third daughter Sally, who was only 15 when the previous book, Doctor in Petticoats, began. At the beginning of this one, in 1882, she's 18, and has traveled to Montana territory, along with a party headed up by a cavalry colonel (introduced in the first book) who's a friend of the family, to visit her married sister Mandy, who's now pregnant with her third child, and close to delivery. Except for the fact that this book is entirely set in Montana, most of the general comments I made in my review of the first one (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ) about the author's style and literary vision would apply here as well; and here too, as in the first one, Mandy and her situation shares the spotlight, that narrative thread alternating with Sally's. A comment I could also have added about the first one, but forgot to, is that Connealy's style includes a vein of dry and sometimes sardonic humor, which gives the tale a pleasant leavening and can sometimes relieve tensions. There's also somewhat more Western action here than in the first book, starting with a bloody gun battle just a few pages in.

Sally's the toughest tomboy of her cattle-ranching family, a persona she developed early, in a futile attempt to get the love of her birth father, who wanted a son and only had daughters. Her stepfather, the man the girls think of as "Pa," never had that attitude; but Sally's behavior pattern, and visceral concern about not being loved if she fell short as a tough cowhand, was already set. Unlike her sisters, she carries it to the point of hiding and being somewhat ashamed of her femininity --she likes wearing a pink ribbon, for instance, but she wears it under her cowboy attire. :-) To Connealy's credit, she embeds some serious thought and life lessons in her story (as a natural part of the narrative, not blocs of sermonizing) about the value of being true to who you are as a person, and a recognition that female strength and can-do capability is a good thing, but that it doesn't at all preclude femininity. She also bends and challenges gender role stereotypes, not only through Sally as a character, but through city-bred artist Logan McKenzie, who's far from most Westerner's idea of "proper" masculinity. It won't be too much of a spoiler to observe that this novel also provides an example of a romantic attraction of opposites, who have in many ways different personalities and attitudes, but who can forge a mutually rewarding love relationship rooted in mutual respect and appreciation for who each of them are.

Bottom line, this was an excellent continuation of the trilogy. Barb and I both gave it high marks!

Another wild, improbable romp from Mary Connealy. Still not proving to be a super good series; I like the Montana series much better. It got really heavy on instalove and romantic feelings for little apparent reason, and some events happened with little to no reason or complete improbability.

Third star added for entertainment value.

Recommendation: Read it but not first!

I like Mary Connealy's writing. I really do but I had a hard time with this one. I have read all of the Montana Marriages series, as well as, the Lasso in Texas series. I feel that makes me a capable judge of this new series, Sophie's Daughters. We first meet Sophie's girls in "Petticoat Ranch" and again in "Calico Canyon." This book, the second in the series, mainly focuses on Sally with a good bit of Mandy's problems thrown in. (See my review of "Doctor in Petticoats” for more about Beth and Mandy's life.) You could read this book out of order and not miss much at all. Although, reading “Calico Canyon” will give you a good sense of what Sally has been through in her lifetime and break your heart in the process.

This book was harder for me to get into. I couldn't decide if Sally's rescuer was manly enough for me. Oddly enough, that was one of the same struggles that Sally had! He is an artist so he is sensitive but he has lived in the wilderness long enough to make him strong and independent. Mary Conneally does a great job of addressing the issue of the way we perceive artists and our immediate judgment of them, good or bad. I struggled with my perception of him the entire book but I also think that was the point.

My biggest problem with the book though is the ending. Mary left it wide open for the next book and I hate that. Mainly because I am impatient and I can't stand waiting for the next book in a series! The story lines are wrapped up enough in this book but it is clear that some of the issues were left unresolved on Mandy's side of things. This also means I have read two books with Mandy's problems and am going to have to wait on the third book to find out if she ever truly finds happiness.

Here are my ratings, from 1-5, with 1 being the lowest

Hotness Factor: 3 stars
I think Husband Tree by this author was much hotter but this is pretty good. He can't stop kissing her at random times so that keeps the chemistry between the two going throughout the story. If you like a lot of tenderness instead of tension then you will like this book.

Series info: 3 stars
In this series, "Doctor in Petticoats" is definitely the better book, so far. I personally liked the "Lassoed in Texas" series better but Husband Tree is still my favorite book by this author.

Overall Rating: 3 stars
Mary Connealy gives a good performance in this series. She is a good storyteller and includes passion and longing but not as much as other CHF authors like DeeAnne Gist and Julie Lessman. There were also some really funny moments between the main characters that seemed genuine and had me laughing out loud.

Christianity: 3 stars
God and faith are in this book but not overtly. More of the “Lord help me through this” than the deep struggle for forgiveness, grace, need, etc.

Summary Plot: Ride into the Rockies where love peaks between a tough Texas tomboy and a passionate artist. On her way to Montana, Sally McClellan’s party is attacked and robbed. But then artist Logan McKenzie saves the badly wounded cowgirl who has been left for dead. Can this landscape painter tame the tomboy without breaking her spirit? Sally doesn’t know much about ribbons and lace, but Logan’s presence makes her want to connect with her feminine side. Will this fractured female discover a way to capture the artist’s love—or find herself captured and killed by outlaws?

Though I don't think it was quite as strong as 'Doctor in Petticoats', I enjoyed this book. I liked how it showed the contrasts between Sally and Logan, and how each of them needed to learn how to be compassionate towards people who didn't act as they might expect someone to act. I really liked how they walked into their relationship knowing that it wasn't going to be easy, but with trust in each other and in God, they'd make it work.
I also really liked how we got to see the continuation of what's been happening with Mandy. The ending of 'Wrangler' definitely signals that things are definitely not settled for Mandy, Sidney and their family.

While I loved the story of the two main characters, I struggled a little at times to keep reading because the character I was supposed to not like I REALLY did not like. As in the other books in this series, Mary Connealy included lots of smiles, quite a few tears, a lot of tension, and a few laugh out loud moments. I cannot wait to see how it all ends in the next book.

I will be the first to admit that I don’t typically read “Inspirational” romances. They tend to be… a bit preachy for my tastes. However, I have to say that Wrangler in Petticoats was surprisingly good for me.

Sally is a tough girl who knows how to work the land — a rancher born and raised who finds value in practicality. Logan is a talented artist who sees beauty in all things, and who often ignores important everyday chores in favor of capturing the majesty that surrounds him in the mountains.

Sally is on the way to visit her sister who is due to have a baby soon when her group is set upon by robbers, who kill everyone in the party. Sally only escapes with her life by falling off a cliff (yes, you read that right) and is very badly injured. As she fell, she was spotted by Logan, who was in the process of sketching for a new painting. He carries her back to his cabin where his Shoshone housekeeper, Wise Sister, helps to nurse her back to health.

In the meantime, Sally’s sister Mandy comes closer and closer to the birth of her third child in as many years, and her wealthy yet obnoxious and inattentive husband does nothing to provide for her or her children, or to protect her from some of the scoundrels that he’s hired to protect him. As the story progresses, we not only follow Sally and Logan, but also Mandy and her family, as well as several side characters that you can’t help but care for even if you’ve never read any of the other stories in the series.

I was rather surprised by how much I liked this book. The plot was fantastic, the characters were both interesting and well-developed, and the setup for the next book was lovely without banging you over the head with it’s obviousness. The romance was sweet and believable, and the action was exciting with some very close calls.

So in the end, I surprise myself by saying, 4/5 Stars, and I’m actually going to pick up the next book in the series, Sharpshooter in Petticoats.

There is no doubt in my mind that Mary Connealy is a gifted, creative storyteller. I have enjoyed the plots of all of her books and her style is smooth and easy to follow. She knows how to bring the reader into the story and feel a connection to the characters. The idea of having a rough and tough cowgirl fall in love with an artsy painter makes for a fun, humorous and interesting plotline. The reason I only give this book three stars is because I am a bit irritated with the portrayal in a few of her books and especially this one of what it means to be a strong woman. The author’s attempt at making Sally and Mandy look strong and independent often crossed the line into making them look just plain bull-headed, insulting, arrogant and rude. Abby in Wildflower Bride was the same type of character and I didn’t like her character either. I lost count of how many times they called those around them idiots, morons or stupid both aloud and in their thoughts. Sally was rescued and nursed back to health by Logan and Wise Sister yet she continually treated Logan with disrespect and rudeness. At one point Sally says to Logan, “You live in the wilderness because you have the manners of a pig?” and I thought that applied more to her than anyone else. Logan saves her life and she constantly insults and degrades him. It was pretty unbelievable to me that he even fell in love with her! Mandy was even worse by continually saying she wanted to bash her husband’s head in and praying that God would protect him on the day she really explodes. Would the hero of a story be respected if he had the same thoughts about his wife? How about praying that you won’t explode at all and that God would help you love and respect your husband more. I have heard that the next book has a stronger male figure so I am continuing on to finish out the series hoping to see that Mandy has maintained her strong spirit but learned a few manners along the way!

It's hard to rate this one, I'm thinking 3.5 stars. Even though I have mixed feelings, it definitely has readability going for it. This is just going to have to be a review I have to come back and tweak later, because I seriously don't know how to feel about it.

Observations:

I'm starting to become very tired of the "swoony" kisses in these romances, and in Christian Romance in general. Above all else, it's unrealistic. I find it incredibly hard to believe that if someone, practically a stranger, just up and kissed you, you would just go along with it and even kiss them back. Is it a nice romantic thought? Maybe. Does it make sense for a grounded Christian woman/girl to act in such a manner? Not really.

I'm also getting tired of the H&H falling for each other physically, incessantly admiring each other, and deciding to marry each other all without the mention of their faith or beliefs. It's an odd thing to be missing from a romance/relationship I assume we're lead to believe is between two Christians? This book is, after all, marketed and sold in that category.

The perfect example in these books, is Mandy! Every Christian woman/girl should take a lesson from her plot. Do not get involved with any man/boy who is not a believer, and certainly don't marry them! I mean, through out the last book and this one I honestly didn't know if Mandy was supposed to be a Christian because she NEVER acted like one. I'm not even sure if Sally acted like one.

Everything I have mentioned would be fine (I guess) if this book was secular fiction, but it's not, it's supposed to be Christian fiction.

I'm probably an author's worst nightmare because I take things too seriously and analyze things that are supposed to be "touchy feely"... I'm also pretty sure I need to give Romance a break soon because it's making me feel very unromantic lol

Who would have thought a gun toting, fast draw female and a paint slinger artist would make such a great story?

The story barrels out with an immediate cliffhanger-literally- as Sally dangles for her life. And as she tumbles into Logan’s life, neither will ever be the same.

I loved the interaction between characters. Their internal monologue filled with snarky quips and punctuated dialogue. The pace of the novel is quick and to the point. Both of Sally’s and Logan’s obsessions with their chosen professions grate on each other’s nerves and occasionally on that of the reader, but as I came to understand the characters, I also had a deeper appreciation for them. And no character is perfect so to see one grow stronger while the other experienced a moment of weakness delves into the strength of their development.

But my favorite part was the subplot. Mandy and her husband Sydney, I really can’t wait until her story is completely unearthed. And the depth of these subplots! Each subplot was its own story that seamlessly interested to weave a tapestry of a story that makes me so very eager for the next novel. Page turning moments through the entire book, but quickly escalated at the very end. There was no putting this book down during the last 50 pages!

I would definitely say that WRANGLER IN PETTICOATS in Mary Connealy’s best!

Wrangler in Petticoats, the second book in the Sophie's Daughters series, is non stop action and romance- the book equivalent to a summer popcorn movie. Revisiting these characters was as easy as watching my favorite actors on the big screen. And I had a grin on my face the whole time!

The feisty McClellan girls are back (as are their friends Luther and Buff). This installment focuses on Sally, a rough-ridin', chaps-wearin' wrangler with a secret girlie streak. Sally miraculously survives a dry gulch ambush and Logan is the tender heart who finds her and takes her home to recover.

But like Doctor in Petticoats, this is Mandy's story too. I really like what Mary Connealy is doing with Mandy's storyline. Since she's stretched it over three books, I have a feeling Sharpshooter in Petticoats (the third in this series) will have a greater emotional payoff. The restrained passion that Mandy shows in the subplot is some of the most romantic writing in the book and I can't wait to read her happily ever after. January can't get here soon enough.

(Thanks to Netgalley for my review copy).

Another excellent read from the expert on cowboys and comedy!
While traveling to Montana to help her pregnant sister, Sally McClellan is attacked and falls off a cliff. Artist Logan McKenzie rescues her, taking her home to Wise Sister, a Shoshone woman who's as practical and savvy as Sally. A conflict of values ensues, with Sally wanting to hunt the elk that Logan wants to portray on canvas. Meanwhile, back at Mandy's ranch, her baby's on the way, her lazy husband has hired a slimeball bodyguard, and Tom Linscott is bringing by some horses. Luther and Buff hunt for Sally, crossing paths with the villains who want a second shot at her. More than enough action and adventure in this second in the "Sophie's Daughers" series. I can't wait for the third!

How does Mary Connealy do it? Each of her books is so good that I wonder how she can possible top it. But she always does! Wrangler in Petticoats is another enjoyable romantic adventure, this one set in the wilds of Montana. The opening scene is an edge-of-your-seat shoot-'em-up in classic Connealy style. In this novel she pairs a tough Texas tomboy with a passionate artist. Adding sweet touches of femininity to her heroine and perfectly layered masculine bravado to her hero, Connealy renders a charming and yet lively courtship between the two. This is a story that will linger long after you close the book.

What a nice twist in Western romances this story was for me. Once again, we dive deep into the world of Sophie's daughters. This one focuses on Sally but we still get to look at Mandy's life, too. I understood that Sally was trying to be what she thought her Pa needed, a cowboy, up until this story happens but we learn so much about her quickly. Sally is traveling to be with Mandy who is due with her 3rd child in her 3rd year of her troubled marriage to Sidney. Mandy is lonely and needs family, so Sally joins a group traveling to go be with Mandy and help her. But on the trail to get to Montana from Texas, Sally ends up in trouble. Our hero, Logan, just like Sally hasn't fit into what is expected of him. He is an artist, who is easily distracted from everyday life in his rush to get something he sees painted or sketched. He lives in his own artistic world and hasn't changed his way of doing anything, but is focused on his artistic world. But soon he might have a reason to focus on more than painting or sketching the wildlife or mountains. I was a little surprised that he hadn't been told about things that back then he would have known he needed to do, instead of relying on others to do it all.
Looking for a enjoyable story set on the edge of Yellowstone? Look no further, try out this fun Western historical romance, get to know Sally and Logan better. Hear more of what is going on with Mandy's life. I enjoyed and recommend this book.

This is a pure adrenaline rush! Sally's traveling party is ambushed in the first couple of pages, and despite her valiant efforts and against insurmountable odds, she barely survives but not without significant damage. Mercifully she's rescued by Logan but the outlaws are hot on their trail and the danger has intensified. We spend the majority of the story with Sally and Logan getting to know each other while escaping from vicious villains, and then we have numerous little tidbits about Sally's sister Mandy. Just like the first book in the trilogy, Mandy's story is interspersed throughout the first two books before she finally gets her own full story in book three. I love love LOVE these characters!! Sally and Logan's budding romance and witty dialogue kept me grinning like a love sick puppy through most of the book! The villains were very creepy. The various gunfights were awesome! And I just love Mandy and can't wait to read her full story!! Another winning series for Mary Connealy!!

I wanted to give this a 3.5 stars but went with 4 stars. I loved how the book started out as action to get your attention and kept going. I had a hard time with how wordy it was and how much explanation about stuff like painting and colors. I enjoyed the way the painter saw things through his eyes. It took alot of pages explaining it and wanted to know what was happening next. I even skimmed through some of the pages to get to more exciting spots. Some spots it didn't separate who was talking from one group of people to the next group of people. I figured out the switch of characters as I was reading them. I'm going on to the next book. So far these books are really good, clean and keeps your attention books. Hopefully not too wordy on the next book.

5 things from Wrangler in Petticoats: a (mini)Review

1)Logan is an artist painting the grandeur of Yellowstone National Park
2) Sally can wrangle any cow and shoot any target. Her tough ways might just save her life.
3)A shootout and a fall from a cliff: Sally should be dead, except she's not. She is the only witness and the desperados are aiming to hunt her down.
4) A very pregnant sister and her gold-hungry husband
5) "But right now, there was no denying he had himself some thoughts. A woman, whose limbs might be exposed, had dropped down from the heavens into his arms. That made her a gift from God straight to him, and he was strongly inclined to accept that gift."
.
.I love Mary Connealy's books! clever and fast-paced and lots of fun!

Another extremely satisfying Western!
Book 2 continues with Mandy's story, while simultaneously sharing her sister Sally's.
Again sass, grit, faith, guns, horses, romance, and even Wise Sister, a Shoshone Indian are all woven into the tale. This time a majority of the story is set in beautiful Yellowstone.
I hardly want to stop to write this review so I can read book 3!

This family (and their close friends) does seem to have the most uncanny ability to be shot at close range and come out barely wounded. Still, setting aside their unlikely near-invincibility, I enjoyed reading this next adventure in the Sophie's Daughters series. I would have appreciated it if the subplot involving the Cooter brothers would have been more neatly tied up at the end of the book, but I guess I'll have to wait until I get into the sequel to find out what happens next.

Sally has left home to help her sister and in the process the party she is with is attacked by bandits and killed in the middle of nowhere. Sally is shot and she falls over a steep cliff with pine trees growing. While falling she sees someone in another of the trees and when she lands he helps her. How badly is she hurt, will she make it to her sisters, is the man from the other tree a good or bad guy, and where is he taking her are all questions running thru her mind.
