Bio

Bonnie Grove started writing when, as a teenager, her parents bought a typewriter (yes, during the age of dinosaurs), and she clacked out a terrible romance novel that her mom loved. She’s been turning out improving prose ever since.

Trained in counseling, and psychology, Bonnie developed social programs for families at risk, while landing newspaper articles and stories in anthologies.

Talking to the Dead came out of that crazy place inside her head that has more questions than answers. Questions about grief, love, sex, God, therapy, and how laughter makes everything okay–if only for a moment. The novel has won awards, and is published in languages she doesn’t speak.

Bonnie thinks in story, and continues to write novels–mostly because she’s too far gone to stop now. She has completed several since Talking to the Dead, and is currently working her butt off to ensure they make their way into your hands. Stay tuned!

Bonnie makes her home in Saskatchewan, Canada with her husband Steve, and their two children, and one dog.

When I first read the info about Time and Time Again, I was anxious to read it as it sounded like The Time Traveler's Wife. It was sort of like that, but this time traveller got to keep his clothes on.

Beautifully written, there is no denying Bonnie Grove is a superb writer. She quickly involves you in the story and doesn't let you go until the last page. It is provocative, mysterious, and when finished reading it, you will be ruminating over how it ended for days.

However, one aspect of this book left me unsettled and left me torn on my feelings for this book. On the one hand, it is excellent writing, but on the other, the use of demon possession and astral projection is as far from a Christian experience as one can get. However, Isobel is the one light in this book, and it is her prayers that provide a way back from the darkness for Gwen. It would have been nice to see how that played out.

The writing is top-notch, and the story is compelling and intriguing, but the subject matter may be too dark for some.

Time and Time Again is a long-awaited offering from author Bonnie Grove, and a literary feast of words, emotions, concepts, and human behaviour that I will be ruminating on for a long time. And that's the mark of a great book - it not only entertains and stirs up feelings, it makes you think. There is so much to love about this novel. I particularly resonated with the main character's relationship to the deity he calls "Sovereign" and his unshaken faith despite the horrendous things that happen to him. I also loved that it is made clear that "Someone fights for" Isobel, another believer, against the powers of darkness. Time and Time Again needs to be a book club selection, because once you've read it, I'm sure that, like me, you will be dying to discuss every element of it. Highly recommend.

One of the goals in life is to find our place in it. When life doesn't make sense, our task to find home is that much harder. Bonnie takes us on that journey with our protagonist who knows much about what isn't home, but precious little about what is.

The question arrises in our search for home, how much do we control our own fate, how much do the Fates control our destiny? Perhaps we need to let the big questions go and just focus on what is in front of us. Otherwise, we might end up beside ourselves. Like Morris. Literally.

A fun read, one that makes you hope for some characters and "boooo!" others.
