I seriously cannot believe how amazing this book turned out to be. It's been ages since I've read a Regency romance that turns so many tropes completely inside out. It's been a while since I've read a romance in general in which my happy buttons are pushed and tickled. I love the sparks that fly between two alpha characters, especially between an alpha male and female. I love how the heroine keeps her agency and how the hero respects it - even when it drives him crazy.
Miss Darcy Sherwood is the latest addition to my exacting list of Book Girlfriends. She is no simpering miss, whose head is turned by the first elegantly turned waistcoat and cravat. She's the star attraction at a fairly respectable gaming hall. She's the epitome of Lady Luck, and she's popular with not a few men of the ton. She's a free spirit, independent and fiercely loyal to her family. She'll do anything to keep them safe and happy. What I also loved was she owned her sexuality and made no secret that she took lovers. Granted, her family was dependent on her income since the father hadn't done right by them.
She's biracial (Black and White) which of course determines her status in the eyes of some. Some reviewers gloss over this for various reasons, but her ethnicity is a large (if often unspoken) part of the narrative and thusly important. To most members of the upper ten-thousand, she's unsuitable for polite society, though for the men of that set, she's an "exotic" beauty they'd be interested in bedding. On the hush, of course.
And I appreciated how the story did not gloss over the politely casual racism amongst the ton. Words like "dusky", "darkie", "exotic" and "sultry" should be frowned upon in contemporary settings, but given the era, make perfect (if uncomfortable) sense.
Lady Luck for Darcy has been quite kind - an entitled heir with his own history with Darcy's family gambled and lost Brayten, the Barrington country seat. And if the family wants it back, it will cost a pretty penny. Not to mention there's no love lost between the Sherwoods and the Barringtons.
Enter Radcliff Barrington, the fourth Baron Broadmoor. He's the typical member of the Regency upper ten-thousand. Of course, his title and his arrogance should be enough to regain the deed. He's set about to teach "That Wicked Harlot" a lesson.
Then meets her in the flesh, Miss Darcy Sherwood.
More than sparks fly as these two headstrong people butt heads. If Radcliff wants Brayten back, he's going to have to play by her rules.
And man, does she lead him a merry chase. A chase, he finds over time he enjoys.
These two characters really worked for me. Both are stubborn, strong-willed but very passionate. And I loved the sex scenes between them. I loved how each shared control and surrender.
Everything's great, right?
Not quite.
Radcliff wants Darcy to be his mistress. She's not having it. She insists again that she's no man's mistress. She values her freedom. Radcliff is thrown for a huge loop. He's willing to give her and her family - including her young nephew Nathan - anything they need.
Still her answer was no.
And he's flummoxed.
For a relatively short book, it filled in the loose ends nicely. The other female characters felt fully actualized, even the two I didn't particularly like. There is a strong bond with most of the women.
Oh, may I wax poetic on Henry? Every woman needs a wonderful and loyal friend like Henry.
I would LOVE a follow up novel because Darcy and Radcliff have a lot more story in them.

Radcliff Barrington learned that his cousin loses the Brayten Estate, through gambling, he immediately searches to whom he would buy back the title.
Darcy Sherwood would do anything for her family, she gambles just to be able to support them. Not only that she’s on top of her game, Darcy is a beauty that captures every man’s attention. Her biggest win was the Brayten estate, coincidentally owned by the person who mistreated her sister, and she wants revenge.
When Radcliff first met Darcy, he insulted and belittles her. Much to her annoyance, Darcy didn’t give in to Radcliff’s monetary offer in exchange for the deed. What Darcy did was to offer a challenge to Radcliff…
“You will submit to being my suitor—an ardent suitor—for a period of six months. You will tend to my every wish and command. Only then, upon your satisfactory and unconditional submission, will I relinquish the deed to Brayten.
Once he accepted it, will he have the patience to be at the beck and call of Darcy? Radcliff is known to be a ladies’ man, will Darcy succumbed to his undeniably good looks and charm?
It's been a while since I read a book from this genre and glad I picked this one, it captivates me from beginning to end. I immensely enjoyed reading this short story. Georgette Brown is a new author to me and I’ll definitely read more of her work in days to come.

December 19, 2019I didn't really think this author would be my cup of tea, but I thought I'd try one of her books. Sadly, I was right. Just not for me. This book is acknowledged as a kind of 'tribute' to Georgette Heyer's Faro's Daughter, but actually that's a bit of an insult to Heyer, really. Hmmm.
The interracial trope had potential to make for an interesting read, but otherwise I was uninterested in the characters and didn't like the writing style. A very odd combination of pseudo-formal 'Regency' style voice with some modernisms thrown into the mix. It made for awkward reading for me - it felt unnatural to read. I don't think I want to read an entire novel in that strange hybrid writing style.
I'm not really sold on the idea of the 'steamy Regency' either. I'm not a prude and I like sexual aspects in my HR reads, as long as it's a natural development of the characters' relationship, and not just an add-on. I read for the love and romance (as well as the historical settings), not for the prurient interest.
Georgette Brown may have many fans who enjoy this style of writing. That's fine. But I now know this author is not for me. *shrugs*

If the Golden Rule of Smut is to "leave no orifice unfilled or sexual fantasy untried", then Em Brown did her homework and produced a nice little erotic historical smutmance.

As I was reading this, I'd nearly decided that this would probably be a 2-star rating, because in my mind, 2-stars is "nothing to write home about, but it didn't suck and I at least finished it." Unfortunately, by the time I got to the end, there were just so many small things wrong that they added up to one big cumulative "bleh!"
The short version: This reads like a first or second draft of a hastily written "good idea." The story is there, it has a lot of tropes that usually hit my "like" buttons, but the execution was so poor, in the end it felt formulaic and just - sloppy. In part, I have to blame the author, but equally or more so, I see this as a really huge editing fail.
The long version: This is getting filed in my personal library as "what NOT to do when writing an erotic romance." A few (but probably not all) issues I had:
1) There's so much set-up with so many characters but no real follow-through. Darcy's ethnic background and society's views on it are mentioned a few times, but not really explored. Instead, it's her occupation that is controversial (btw, really unimpressed with how much that part of her character was glossed over or completely disregarded in the cover design. She's said to have "savage blood" and described as having caramel skin and kinky-curly hair. Our cover heroine looks... well, like a generic brunette white chick. Poor move, Ravenous.).
We're shown Darcy's stepmother and half-sister, and we're given a nod to her deceased father, but there is no follow-up on how she came to be where she is, or how her father and natural mother met up, or their marriage, etc. Maybe it doesn't seem important to the story, but then why give us the set-up of her lineage as being so problematic?
Further, Darcy's stepmother seems to go from a relatively decent woman to an idiotic spendthrift near the end, but again, no explanation or follow-through with that.
2) I get that it's erotic romance, but that's sort of a cheat term, anyway. The problem is that neither one fed the other. In fact, there was so much 'erotica' that it eventually killed the romance, and what romantic plot there was wound up distracting from the erotica.
3) HELLO random menage scene! Seriously? I love a good threesome scene. But in this case there is no way I could even tell if the scene itself was actually hot, because the whole time I was reading it, I was thinking, "Wait... what? WHAT? What the hell just happened here?? This makes no sense!!" Seriously, you've set up our hero-of-at-least-three-constantly-interchanging-names as Mr. Possessive Jealous I'll-Beat-You-To-A-Pulp macho guy. His heart is broken, he can't fathom why Darcy has rejected his offer to take her as his mistress, he sneaks into her bedroom for the nth time (why, hello there Edward Cullen creepy guy!), and in walks Darcy getting it on with some other dude, apparently enjoying it because she's hammered and fantasizing about him. He... *starts* to go jealous ragey until dude suggests he join in.
And then he does! This is the guy who's been alternately judging and seething with jealousy about what a harlot Darcy is, blah blah blah, and he just shrugs it all off and says, 'okey doke!' It was so transparently gratuitous it was embarrassing. Seriously, it felt like the author was trying to meet a quota for different types of 'kinks' here, and that's just... not sexy. Oh, and to add insult to injury, later we're spoon-fed Darcy and Broadmoor's inner monologues about how they can't believe they just did that. Like it's some kind of afterthought. And then? We never hear about it again. Totally gratuitous and kind of insulting.
4) PLEASE, for the love of GOD, ALL WRITERS!! I'm sure YMMV and all, but one word that is never, ever sexy in a sex scene is, "penis." We don't need loverockets or man trunks. Words like, "hardness," "erection," and "cock" all do just fine. Hell, the elusive generalization of "he" works, even in erotica.
You want to know what's worse, though? 3/4 the way through the book, the author randomly starts referring to Darcy's girl parts as her "cunnie." HER "CUNNIE."
I seriously threw up in my mouth a little. It's not cute, sexy, or necessary. STOP IT.
5) Now, on to the technical stuff. Bear in mind, I'm not an English professor or anything. But just from writing fan fiction, I've learned enough to spot some glaringly bad grammar and punctuation issues. This is where the editor, if there even was one, needs to be FIRED. These things might seem nitpicky, but they were constant throughout the book, to the point where it distracted from anything that might have been redeeming.
5a) Even in 3rd person dual or selective multiple, when you're in one particular person's head for narration, think about how they regard themselves. I swear, Broadmoor must be suffering a serious identity crisis, because even he was referring to himself as Broadmoor, Radcliff, and the Baron alternately. Also, if you're already talking about his erection in his pants, you don't need to specify again that it's "Broadmoor's trousers" (or, dear god, "pantaloons").
5b) Learn and master the difference and correct use of past tense versus perfect past tense. The internet is a wondrous thing. You don't even have to look stuff up in The Elements of Style anymore.
5c) There's such a thing as overdoing your regency lingo. It's not necessary. I don't have a hard example because my brain is already trying to forget this book and I refuse to open it again. But really - there were several instances where a character said or thought something and I had to eye-roll because there's no way a normal human, even in the time and setting of this book, would actually use such things in day-to-day speech.
5d) Find a writing software that has a repetition visualizer, and use it. As an amateur, it's mortifying to discover through someone else that you have overused a word or phrase. But even though it's a small e-publisher, being published and having people pay money for your work makes you a professional. Write like one. Edit like one (to whoever apparently edited this thing).
I guess that's ultimately all I have to say about this one. Normally I wouldn't bother with such a detailed rundown, but the farther I got in this book, the more it bugged me on so many levels. It had the potential to be a good read, really. After about four more revisions, a lot more character development, and a better editor.

TWH began with the Radcliff in bed with his mistress thinking about how she was sleeping with someone else and he should have dropped her a while ago. I closed it and was going to DNF but I decided that since the Darcy was probably doing the same thing across town and we didn't get him mid act I would continue.
I read this book because I thought from the blurb it would be different. The only "differences" between this and most Regency romances are that Darcy is biracial (prepare for the expected racism) and she is sexually experienced (prepare for the sexism and name calling). Rad is every alpha playboy jackass ever. I tried to see things from his POV when it came to her being a seductive gambler but I couldn't get passed him calling her names (thankfully never anything racist) and never apologizing. Or his forced seduction techniques... she always comes around but yeah.
Darcy was actually pretty interesting and I really enjoyed how confident she was. I was hoping they would have a good rivalry going but she quickly lost what little leverage she had and she was betrayed by desire too many times.
I loved how she was with her sister and best friend but hated the jealous back and forth with his old mistress. Ditto her almost hooking up with someone else over a bet.
The ending was an HEA and I believed it but it was rushed. I wish the author had spent more time showing us how they fell in love and less time on describing parties and clothing.

I loved reading That Wicked Harlot. Darcy is a match for Radcliff in every way, but his arrogance and stubborn ways prevent him from feeling what his heart knows. Again, Ms. Brown captivates her readers with a well written story. I love that Darcy is of mixed heritage, well read, and a strong heroine. I recommend this story to fans of regency romance who love their stories with a sensual touch. Light spanking and sensual bondage.

Again, Ms. Brown captivates her readers with a well written story. I love that Darcy is of mixed heritage, well read, and a strong heroine. I recommend this story to fans of regency romance who love their stories with a sensual touch. Light spanking and sensual bondage.

I liked this book. It was a quick read but it was worth it.
In the beginning of the book we meet Baron Broadmoor, Radcliff Barrington and some of his family, mainly his cousin Edward who is the one causing all the problems. Of course Edward gambled away the deed to his family home and can't figure out how to get it back. The Baron is now required to fix his cousin's problems. So the Baron goes to see Darcy Sherwood who won the deed and plans on giving it back. The Baron does not like Darcy because of where she works and Darcy does not like the Baron because he is a Barrington and his cousin Edward has caused more trouble that the family knows. She ends up making bets with the Baron. I don't want to give away too many details because it is better if you read it for yourself. I like this author and I plan to read more of her books.

Oyy.
I don't necessarily want to call historical romance a guilty pleasure because I don't think I should feel guilty about occasionally wanting to read about the sexytimes of 19th-century British aristocracy. There's a time and place for highbrow books and there's a time and place for brainless fluff. (I should probably spend more time on highbrow books, but that's a different discussion altogether.)
That said... I can't completely shut off my brain even while reading brainless fluff. Which brings us back to the 'oyy'.
For one, it desperately needs an editor. The typos and grammatical errors threw me off often enough, and some of the vocabulary was too modern for the period.
Secondly, was there even a plot there? I don't remember one. Not that one reads historical romance for world-building, buuut...
Thirdly, maybe I'm priggish, or maybe I'm uninformed, but I was operating from the assumption that, in the world of Regency romance, 'sweet & clean'=chaste-kiss-at-the-most and 'steamy'=sex, and would have appreciated a BSDM content warning? (Obviously, I looked at the Goodreads page too late.) More problematically, oyyyyyyy with the dubcon. I almost DNF-ed after the maze scene. I'm still kind of ill-at-ease with myself for pushing through.
I did really like the heroine (as long as she wasn't melting into puddles at the H's feet), so there's that.

3 1/2.stars- for the heat alone!
Is my first book by this author and I have to say I was impressed. She takes the subject of a mixed race heroine trying to take care of her family, and mixed it with a stuffy know-it-all hero in Regency England
I was amused and taken with Darcy, and loved her strength, her open sensuality and her loyalty to her family

I actually liked what this book was about. Especially with a theme that was a bit reminiscent of P&P. The thing that took me out of the story at times was the language used and the errors that popped up all over the place.
The language was supposed to be that of the time the story is set it but it was so severe that it mad some of the story unpleasant for me. As to the errors, a bit of editing could fix that up right fast.
Still, I like the fact of these two people from different walks of life being one another's perfect match, and the way they figured that out.

The characters aren't likeable. I guess the shock value of having a black leading woman in a Regency era book is supposed to carry it through. But no, I want to read a book about characters I actually like.

YOU CAN BE TO FREE WITH ANY BEHAVIOR: A HARLOT OF ?
Bridgette Brown for The Wicked Harlot ( A Steamy Recency Romance) gets only 2 STARS which I having read her books before really expected better, however the plot idea is a good one. I found parts of it choppy and felt like paragraphs had been deleted as well as character dialog, because just in middle of conversation, the Baron ask his cousin "So you know who the father of the boy is?" which is totally out of whack , the reader can guess which boy, because we read about one earlier but not how these two actually know there is in fact a bit; besides other times like this that just leaves the reader confused. Two other things that pop out that play with several of your emotions is Darcy is bi-racial and one of the things that conflict is an ex-slaver hangs out at her gaming establishment, he also keeps his abused ex -slaves at home as servants pays poorly didn't give them up until the law was passed he had to and still has forced sex with them because they don't know they can refuse, plus he was part of slave ship business, knowing this then add the fact Darcy was schooled a little in delivering S & M, instead of her making this man pay large sums just for the privilege of conversation to say more for a game with him, he gets to paw over her just about every night he is there. Finally, the S & M part is crazy she seems to only be a dominant with the Baron yet she wins all the time but wears threadbare dresses another irritation. All in all Georgette Brown is a good author, but it's like some of this book pages was written down some where besides the portion that got printed.

I received this book for free, in kindle format from BookBub.
This was the second book, in the boxset.
I liked Steamy Regency Romance Book 1 so much, I really wanted to like this book.
I must admit, I stayed up to about 4am to finish this book.
This author has a great writing style, that will keep you engaged.
Details were nice.
Unfortunately, I just didn't like the story. I found the words, "wicked harlot" overused. It just wasn't a good description. The male lead was an ass. He may have regretted the words he used while he was overheard by the female lead, but he never apologized. Furthermore, family is a sensitive thing. I hated that he threatened to take his nephew from the mother (just awful). The last few chapters seems to just go on and on. It took too long to get to the conclusion.
Also, I didn't like how public all the setting were.
I would not recommend this book.

This is a Regency Romance with a very big twist.

Darcy is a strong willed woman that works in a gambling house dealing cards and gambling her kisses for money...thankfully the house wins. Working to pay off the debts her father left behind and take care of her stepmother, sister and nephew she's takes what chances she can to try to provide. Thankfully one evening pays off very well for her and she wins the deed for a manor.
What Darcy doesn't expect is for Ratcliff to come and try to collect that deed back from her...by whatever means he needs to...

Good pace, nice buildup and very intriguing plot twist. Wish there was a more steady background on Darcy and her sister. Some of the background into the two sisters seem to be thrown in as an afterthought and didn't match what was previously mentioned. I also would have liked to seen the "aha" moment Lord Radcliff realized he was in love with Darcy played out better. All in all, it was a good read and I did enjoy the book.

There she gains from the man who wronged her sister the deed for his estate but then his cousin, Radcliff gors to her to retrieve the estate so she makes a plan to get revenge from this terrible men by requiring him to be her suitor. The problem is that she doesn't know is if she hates him or...

This was an entertaining Recency Romance. I found it to be very well-written,in spite of some of the egregious examples
of a limiting vocabulary, and really poor editing. The characters were,however, skillfully crafted. I will check into a

I thoroughly enjoyed this regency romp, saucy bits included 😊
I was enraptured from the start, and involved with the characters in a way that most contemporary romances just don't match. Georgette Brown will definitely get another read from me; if you like to see the mores of an earlier time bent, ignored, or downright flouted by a strong woman then this is for you.

Two strong, main characters. Darcy Sherwood is responsible for supporting her mother, sister, and nephew. Radcliff Barrington, the Baron Broadmoor, determined to regain a family estate lost in a gambling hall. Simple plot. Good dialogue. Lots of steamy sex. Plenty of emotion between the two.

I truly enjoyed this novel, but felt some of the confrontations to be manufactured. The lady doth protest too much...
I did think it was ridiculous that she was punishing him by giving him repeated bjs. Uh...not punishment. In fact, the whole revenge thing felt like it wasn't revenge at all and more an excuse for kinky sex, which is okay, but obvious.

The sex scenes were quite steamy, and I liked the heroine. The hero, on the other hand, was an arrogant overbearing overly-possessive jerk. He constantly criticizes and severely insults the heroine and never really apologizes for it. Also, there were several "romantic" scenes that were pretty iffy (at best) on consent to such acts.
