Brilliant! One of the finest characters to come from 2000 AD, Rogue Trooper is at his best throughout this volume. There is a decidedly deeper plotting involved with the stories presented in this collection. The issues they were originally released in are almost entirely back-to-back, making a fairly continuous storyline. Rogue and his buddies: Helm, Gunnar & Bagman continue to wander across Nu Earth in search of the Traitor who was responsible for the death of the entire battalion of GI's, leaving Rogue Trooper as the single survivor. Gone from volume one is the light-hearted one-off episodes. There is a bit of humour still present but Rogue is much darker now than in earlier stories. He doesn't stop for the heck of it to help out just because any more; his mission is too vital now. But there are some two or three episode stories where he does stop, or is stopped, to help for the greater good. Rogue's character develops, no matter what his buddies' opinion, in the end, Rogue cannot kill for the sake of it and takes innocence into account. There is a climax and culmination to Rogue's current situation in this volume which is very exciting and satisfying. This then leads to a new plot, a new quest, and we end the volume with our team headed in a new direction. A very good, science-fiction, post-apocalypse read.

Covering the stories ranging from Progs 318 to 406, we see the resolution of Rogue's hunt for the traitor and the beginning of a new adventure. In the original comics, there were times when I looked forward to Rogue more than Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog. But re-reading the stories many years later made me realise how little actually happens at times and it almost became a bit repetitive. Not noticeable when reading the stories in bite-sized chunks one week at a time, but it is noticeable when reading them all in one go in a collection like this.

However I must point out that the artwork was always of the highest standard for the time. I particularly like Cam Kennedy's artwork, but it was all good. More consistent than Judge Dredd IMO.

All in all, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane.

Rogue Trooper is a G.I. (Genetic Infantryman) in the Nu-Earth Future War. G.I.s are genetically modified to be able to survive in the toxic wasteland of Nu-Earth. He has the biochips of three of his fallen G.I.s inserted into his equipment, which gives the book a supporting cast. Gunnar (inserted into his gun with a number 2 written on him), Helm (inserted into his helmet with a number 1 written on him), and Bagman (inserted into his backpack with a number 3 written on him) are waiting for Rogue to prove his innocence so that they can return to Milli-Com and become re-gened into new bodies.

This has a serial feeling to it, with Rogue trying to prove his innocence while consistently doing the right thing for his cause even though the Southers would kill him if they could. In that regard it is like a sci-fi version of the 1960s television series Branded.

A few new elements are added to Rogue's abilities, and they are presented in a believable manner. I really enjoyed the tightly structured, fast-paced arcs. The main difference between these arcs and what now passes as arcs in comics is that this was done in mostly 4-page weekly bursts. This really picked up at the end. I enjoyed it so much that I bumped Vol. 3 up the backlog queue and am already reading it.

NOT FOR TRANS PEOPLE OR WOMEN!!!

Saga of Rogue Trooper continues following the previous volume, in equally decent way, like the good ol' cheesy early 80s sci-fi comics can provide for exclusively teen boys' diet.

Rogue and his chip buddies are still pursuing traitorous general; this book is more straightforward in that regard than previous volume storywise. But all the goodies from said volume are present here. Despite that the book gets repetitive, it never really gets boring. Action is non - stop, visuals are cool and there are few really surprising twists along the way and glimpses of humor. And at the end, Rogue squares things with the general, only for a new narrative to open and Rogue heads in a new adventure.

Most of the art duties go to Brett Ewins and Cam Kennedy and both don't disappoint (though I slightly prefer Kennedy's approach).

All in all, off to the next volume.

The second of the collection of Rogue Trooper stories from 2000A, this one contains more stories of Rogue's journey across Nu-Earth and concludes with the final confrontation between Rogue and the Traitor General that caused the massacre of the Genetic Infantrymen.

His search over, it would appear that Rogue has fulfilled his pledge to revenge the GI and to return his buddies to Milli-Com to be regenerated. But something goes wrong and as the book ends, it is with Rouge once again going rogue to help his buddies again. But will he succeed in finding the cure on an alien world or is he heading into a death trap?

Rogue trooper completes the quest for revenge in this volume and is vindicated to the southern army. Enjoyable read with some great pulp moments.

Yeah, the first end of the Rogue Trooper story lines. Still subject to the problems of adolescent comics of the 70's and early 80's but there was a sense of a more mature method of story telling developing. Again this is childhood revisited stuff and might not stand comparison if you haven't enjoyed it at a more childish level prior.

End of an era, the Traitor is captured.
Reading this much Rogue Trooper in a row, it really points out how hollow the storyline is. Some nice supporting characters, but not too much happening in stories. But hey, when the art is this good and action almost non-stop, what not to like?
