Banana Yoshimoto (よしもと ばなな or 吉本 ばなな) is the pen name of Mahoko Yoshimoto (吉本 真秀子), a Japanese contemporary writer. She writes her name in hiragana. (See also 吉本芭娜娜 (Chinese).)

Along with having a famous father, poet Takaaki Yoshimoto, Banana's sister, Haruno Yoiko, is a well-known cartoonist in Japan. Growing up in a liberal family, she learned the value of independence from a young age.

She graduated from Nihon University's Art College, majoring in Literature. During that time, she took the pseudonym "Banana" after her love of banana flowers, a name she recognizes as both "cute" and "purposefully androgynous."

Despite her success, Yoshimoto remains a down-to-earth and obscure figure. Whenever she appears in public she eschews make-up and dresses simply. She keeps her personal life guarded, and reveals little about her certified Rolfing practitioner, Hiroyoshi Tahata and son (born in 2003). Instead, she talks about her writing. Each day she takes half an hour to write at her computer, and she says, "I tend to feel guilty because I write these stories almost for fun."

This short story appeared on posters on Tokyo's Higashi Nippon railway. What a brilliant move. This is an enchanting vignette that captures a moment in the middle of things: a huge city, a new phase of life, a moment wakefulness in the course of daily life.

"In my stupor, I could hear her saying, 'You never have to go back to that station again, if you don't want to. That's one option.'"

যারা বানানা য়োশিমোতো'র লেখা আগে কখনো পড়েননি, এবং যারা তাঁর কোন লেখাটা দিয়ে শুরু করবেন বলে ভাবছেন তারা নির্দ্বিধায় এই গল্পটি দিয়ে শুরু করতে পারেন। আমি এর আগে য়োশিমোতোর 'কিচেন' আর 'মুনলাইট শ্যাডো' পড়েছি। সেখানে তাঁর লেখার ক্ষমতা ও ধরন সম্পর্কে যে ধারণা পেয়েছি তাতে তাঁর আরও লেখা পড়ার ব্যাপারে ব্যাপক আগ্রহ বোধ করেছি। পরিসরে ছোট এই গল্পটি মানে ও ভাবনায় কিচেন তো বটেই মুনলাইট শ্যাডো'কেও ছাড়িয়ে যায়। কিছু কিছু লেখা থাকে যেগুলো পড়ে পাঠক একপ্রকার 'হ্যাংওভার'-এ ভোগেন। এই গল্পটা অমন একটি লেখা। যার রেশ মাথায় থাকে না, বরং গল্পটি মাথায় স্থান করে নেয়, পাঠক তার ভাবনায় নানা সময়ে লেখাটির নানা চরিত্রে নিজেকে বা পরিচিত কাউকে কল্পনা করেন; কখনো মনে মনে গল্পটিকে আরও সামনে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যান। এই গল্পটি বস্তুত একটি যথাযথ পরিসরের উপন্যাসের বীজ ধারণ করে। জানিনা য়োশিমোতো সেই বীজটিকে কোথাও মহীরুহতে রূপান্তরিত করেছেন কিনা বা করছেন কিনা। সমকালীন জাপানী সাহিত্য যাঁদের অবদানে সারা দুনিয়ার সাহিত্যামোদীদের কাছে স্থায়ী আসন করতে পেরেছে য়োশিমোতো নিঃসন্দেহে তাঁদের মধ্যে প্রথম সারির একজন হবেন।

I just picked up a collection of Banana Yoshimoto's short stories and this was the first thing I've read by her. It was a simple yet compelling story. Every word is a deliberate choice and she masterfully wrote what others have called a "cozy" and "warm" story to read. I read it two days ago but the storyline and images linger in my mind. It was a fun and comforting read and I look forward to reading more of her work in the near future.

Great short story about a newlywed man who decides to stay on the train, instead of going to his place. He meets a bum that magically transforms into a beautiful woman.
