I didn't think I would like it this book because I am not interested in sailing the ocean or climbing a mountain. I found it to be captivating nevertheless. Imaging traveling one, much less two, centuries ago in a heavy wool skirt and braving the elements without the benefit of today's equipment. The beautiful, quality layout reflects Pomegranate's top standards.
The book reminded me of my brave, faithful, dear friend JRD, who traveled to Asia alone when a friend backed out of the trip. I look forward to sending this book on to my strong, active friend KM.
The book includes a quote from the 1/26/27 issue of the CSM.
In the 1890s, Annie Peck became a celebrity when when she wore pants to climb the Matterhorn. Surprisingly, "Singer Sewing Machine Company even included this photograph of Peck in her climbing gear with every new machine they sold." Didn't they risk a backlash from consumers?
I admire both Annie Peck and Peru; "...on September 1, 1908, Annie Smith Peck became the first person to summit Huascaran Norte (21,812 ft.) - which Peru later named Cumbre Ana Peck in her honor - and the first woman to make the initial ascent of a major peak. Two years later she reached the north summit of the unclimbed 21,000-foot Mount Coropuna in Peru and planted a "Votes for Women" sign at the top."
