This was a perfect escapist read for me! Easy to dip in and out of - once I'd got my head around the multiple characters and the different times in which the story is set!
It follows the Keeler family - namely Diana and her 3 sons - and features their relationships as they fall in love and move on with their lives. But the past is always hanging over all of them which leads to deception, disputes and building resentments. As the women in the sons' lives deal with their own issues, then the past seems to begin to repeat itself!
Lots of different issues that are dealt with some very different character traits - all building up to some big shocks and twists towards the end which force people to face up to what went on and how that has affected their lives and perceptions throughout,

Re-rating books atm, and I can't help but think how long and boring this book got sometimes... Maybe the author tried to make us feel connected to the characters, if so it didn't work. Anyway, 3 stars. Also re-wrote my review lol

At first, I was really confused and I had to go back a couple of times to remember what the characters did. Apart from that, the story was amazingly written and the plot twist left me shocked. Once I got into the book, I couldn't stop reading it.
However, I think some details were too repeated in many pages to the point where it got a little boring. It took too long for the mystery to reveal. From time to time it felt like the story kept getting dragged.
All in all, it was good! Maybe in the future I'll come across some other books this author has written and give her a second chance. Who knows.
Read this book if you like waiting a long time for mysteries to reveal, and then have a rushed ending. The decision is up to you!

If ever there was a book to buy for its cover alone, One Secret Summer by Lesley Lokko is that book - simply stunning to just look at!!!! Thankfully, contained within is a story that is *almost* as well produced! If you're a fan of complex family drama with an international flair, this one - and indeed almost any book by Lesley Lokko - will not disappoint!
The novel centres on the Keelers - Diana, the matriarch and famous litigator; Harvey, her surgeon husband; their sons Rafe, Aaron and Josh, along with wives Maddy, Julia, and Niela respectively. Narration switches from one character's perspective to another's in groups of 1-3 chapters - a convention I normally dislike, but it works here. The hallmark of Lokko's novels is her ability to create characters with depth, glamourous lives lived in exotic locales, and complex relationships that a reader can relate to, and she succeeds once again with each character in this book. Each is easily memorable and distinguishable - I never worried about getting any of them mixed up with another.
The storyline basically revolves around one of the sons being "not like the others", and the reason(s) why that might be the case. Ultimately - and this is why I only gave this book 4 stars rather than 5 - the ending is not at all a surprise and in fact the entire backstory can be guessed at early on in the novel - so it became quite annoying when several characters kept musing about the one son being unlike his siblings in some way, but none were able to put their finger on it. C'mon already!!! :-)

The start was really good and the story progressed well too.But the ending was so disappointing & incomplete. The author had not written enough about Julia and Maddie.I felt as if Niela was the main character & it was her part that I loathed the most. I still want to know what happened to Julia's baby? Did Aaron ever realise the truth or did Julia keep him in the dark forever? If not for the ending I would've given it 5/5 but bc of it it'll be 3/5.

Non avevo mai letto niente di Lokko, non mi tornerà mai la voglia. Se si escludono un paio di inquietanti colpi di scena, la trama riserva dinamiche relazionali molto banali. Già a metà libro si capisce gran parte del “segreto” protagonista del libro

Amazing. Once I started reading this book I can’t stop. It’s really interesting and exciting. I like Niela’s story and her character most. Definitely recommend this book. 5 star!

Peccato per il tono eccessivamente da soap opera dei capitoli finali, perché mi stava piacendo, mentre ora avrei solo voglia di prendere a sprangate sui denti tutti i personaggi.
La voglia non mi è passata, ma visto che il libro mi è stato prestato vorrei dire qualcosa prima di restituirlo e iniziare a perdermi pezzi come mio solito.
La storia è quella di tre giovani donne - anche se la trama lasciava intendere altro -, tre donne con un passato doloroso alle spalle, con una vita piena di cambiamenti e novità. Niela, Julia e Maddy si ritrovano ad affrontare - chi per un motivo chi per un altro - situazioni difficili che le mettono alla prova. Julia è un'aspirante avvocato che è riuscita a entrare ad Oxford, avendo così l'opportunità di far capire agli altri che quello non è un mondo solo per ricchi rampolli figli di papà, ma accessibile anche a chi come lei viene da una famiglia normale.
Niela è una rifugiata somala, che prima dell'inizio della guerra aveva un futuro davanti a sé, ma la fuga dal suo Paese verso l'Europa è difficile da affrontare, così come è difficile sottostare al volere di un padre che non riesce ad abituarsi a quella nuova vita.
Maddy sogna di diventare un'attrice, ma si accorgerà ben presto che quello è un mondo che non fa sconti a nessuno, e una scuola di recitazione non rappresenta un lasciapassare per questo mondo.
Tre donne caratterialmente diverse, le cui strade incroceranno quelle di tre fratelli di buona famiglia, belli, ricchi e con una madre importante alla spalle.
I segreti sono il perno del romanzo, soprattutto quello imponente della famiglia Keeler, che Diana Keeler ha nascosto per anni, per evitare di distruggere la famiglia a cui tiene tanto ma che già da tempo è traballante.
La storia è molto romanzata, forse un po' harmony, ma non mi è per nulla dispiaciuto perché in fondo lascia una certa curiosità e voglia di sciogliere i nodi.
Allo stesso tempo, la cosa che non mi è piaciuta è il carattere troppo da soap opera dei capitoli finali. I segreti della famiglia sono tanti e la Lokko ha deciso di aggiungerne altri, creando così un ciclo senza fine e purtroppo evidenziando ancora il tema del tradimento, che non mi va mai giù.
Soprattutto, ha lasciato varie cose in sospeso, ma non un sospeso bello, no. Ci sono ancora errori, tradimenti, segreti e scelte che mi hanno fatto storcere il naso, facendomi crollare personaggi e coppie che sembrava avessero capito ma che in realtà hanno distrutto tutto il bello che avevano costruito.
Forse tutto dipende dal finale troppo affrettato, che con qualche pagina in più sarebbe certamente migliorato.
I personaggi sono tutti ben caratterizzati, anche quelli caratterialmente più distanti da me, o quelli che proprio non mi piacevano, come Diana. Non nego che a un certo punto avrei voluto che le tre donne tirassero fuori il girl power e lasciassero quei tre uomini ai loro mostri, perché le donne sono un passo avanti.
Nel complesso la Lokko è promossa, ma il tono alla Beautiful delle ultime pagine ha guastato quello che sarebbe potuto essere per me un romanzo da quattro stelline.

Attraverso la sua scrittura, si arriva veramente molto vicino a ognuno di loro e questo rende vivida la percezione dei più disparati sentimenti, spesso assolutamente contrastanti. Raramente ho provato per uno stesso personaggio simpatia, tenerezza, gelosia, rabbia, sconcerto con lo scorrere delle pagine all’interno dello stesso romanzo. Tutti i protagonisti sono caratterizzati perfettamente senza la minima sbavatura, pur nella loro complessità, e tutti seguono comportamenti inaspettati a seconda del tempo e delle circostanze, lasciando il lettore stupito e attonito ma senza l’ombra del paradosso, in un crescendo di stupore e meraviglia. Ogni personaggio compie scelte, prende decisioni e commette errori incarnando in maniera completa la propria umanità, la propria natura fragile e imperfetta, simile alla natura di ogni uomo.
Una lettura che mi ha letteralmente travolto, senza dubbio per me una delle migliori degli ultimi tempi.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book now that it's over. It started off really well. I was fully invested in the story and its characters. I found the structure and large mix of characters and POVs made for a really enjoyable read. Some of the topics that were touched on weren't enjoyable themselves, but the way the story was told held my interest throughout. The story flowed nicely, and the characters were all really well-rounded. My favourite character was definitely Neila. I liked her from beginning to end. Everyone else had their likeable and unlikeable moments. They were all individually flawed and came across as so real, like they were more than just a creation from an author's imagination.
This story had so many ups and downs emotionally, and the plot spanned a large amount of time and wasn't boring to me in the slightest. That being said, sadly, I was quite disappointed with the ending. The development of all the individual relationships had been such a crucial part of the story throughout, so when I got to the end of the book and so many of the situations and elements of story felt unfinished and unresolved, I felt like I had an incomplete copy of the book. By the end of this 400+ page novel, there are so many question marks that I'm left with that I feel like I've read all of it for nothing.

Questo è il primo libro che leggo di quest'autrice e devo dire che ne sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa.
Nonostante sia un volume corposo, si legge senza mai annoiarsi, questo, grazie allo stile scorrevole e coinvolgente.
L'estate francese vede protagonisti la famiglia Keeler e i segreti, che se svelati potrebbero cambiare drasticamente le sorti di molte persone.
La storia prende il via nel lontano 1969, ed è narrata attraverso molti punti vista (soprattutto quello femminile) ma non comporta problemi al lettore.
Le storie d'amore dei tre Keeler non sono per niente facili considerato che le tre ragazze appartengono ad un mondo totalmente diverso inoltre Diana Keeler (la madre) le ritiene inadeguate.
Stranamente non è un romanzo in cui la suocera fa di tutto per metterle in difficoltà anche perché in fondo sono ragazze fragili e buone: Mandy vuole diventare un'attrice, è una provinciale, si sente costantemente inadeguata e soffre di disturbi alimentari, Julia, di famiglia modesta, si ritrova a frequentare Oxford grazie ad una borsa di studio e purtroppo non avrà una bella accoglienza nonostante la sua determinazione e l'impegno negli studi ed infine Niela una profuga somala, costretta dalla famiglia ad un matrimonio combinato con un tiranno ed è solo l'inizio...
Una trama ben costruita, personaggi interessanti, scritto bene e temi seri (la condizione di un rifugiato, i matrimoni combinati, i disturbi alimentari etc. etc.) trattati con cura.
Peccato che alcune cose restino in sospeso: che ci sia in programma un sequel?
Nonostante sia un volume corposo, si legge senza mai annoiarsi, questo, grazie allo stile scorrevole e coinvolgente.
L'estate francese vede protagonisti la famiglia Keeler e i segreti, che se svelati potrebbero cambiare drasticamente le sorti di molte persone.
La storia prende il via nel lontano 1969, ed è narrata attraverso molti punti vista (soprattutto quello femminile) ma non comporta problemi al lettore.
Le storie d'amore dei tre Keeler non sono per niente facili considerato che le tre ragazze appartengono ad un mondo totalmente diverso inoltre Diana Keeler (la madre) le ritiene inadeguate.

🇬🇧: I'm sure they paid handsomely for this book to get good reviews, because it is awful.
The only part I actually liked were the last 150 pages, where the knots come to the boil and you actually want to understand what the hell the Keeler family's secret is; although I was particularly annoyed that an incurable cancer was thrown in to resolve the story in a short and concise way.
As for the protagonists... I don't have good things to say: they are poorly described and come across as naive little macchiatas more often than not.
I wouldn't recommend reading this to anyone honestly, not even under a beach umbrella.

L'unica parte che mi è effettivamente piaciuta sono le ultime 150 pagine, dove i nodi vengono al pettine ed effettivamente vuoi capire che cosa diavolo sia il segreto della famiglia Keeler; anche se mi ha dato particolarmente fastidio che sia stato buttato in mezzo un cancro incurabile per risolvere la storia in modo breve e conciso.
Per quanto riguarda le protagoniste... non ho belle cose da dire: sono descritte male e risultano spesso e volentieri delle macchiette ingenue.
Non consiglio di leggerlo a nessuno onestamente, neanche sotto un ombrellone al mare

This book was okay. Not perfect though.
The writing was perfect. The character development was perfect. The plot was perfect. The twist was perfect. :)
I just felt that the book was very slow in the start and after the plot twist it was super rushed. I felt that the ending was appropriate and it was a nice ending. But what happened to Hamid, Christian and Maddie's mother!? I felt that I didn't get the closure I needed. :(
Another major problem was that I felt Maddie and Julia were too similar and I kept getting confused between them in the beginning. Maybe I'm just the only one?
Overall, REALLY liked the storyline. It was quite shocking and intense at times. But, lighthearted and funny at others.
This book is basically about the Keeler family and how perfect they look as a family, whereas they have a lot of unknown problems and secrets. We get to understand the Keelers and their drama through the perspectives of Julia, Maddie and Niela (three sister-in-laws of the 3 sons of Diana and Harvey Keeler). I don't want to say much else as it's best to just go into the book blind.
For me, I'd give it a 3/5 stars, but I definitely want to read more of Lesley Lokko's books in the forseeable future.

Personaggi ben caratterizzati in una trama corposa e intricata, in cui si intrecciano segreti e bugie, amore e affetti famigliari. Avvincente e ben costruito, ancor di più se si pensa che dare voce a diversi personaggi, riservando ad ognuno il proprio peso perfettamente bilanciato con tutti gli altri, è cosa difficile. Bello lo stile, pulito e introspettivo. Mi sarebbe piaciuto un finale diverso, ma rimane la mia opinione personale.

Era da tanto che desideravo leggerlo e devo ammettere che é valsa l'attesa. Una grande storia corale, su cui spiccano i personaggi di Diana, la madre, e Niela, la moglie del fratello minore, su come i segreti possano essere tossici e distruttivi, e su come, una volta liberatisi da questo fardello, ci si senta più liberi e leggeri. Lesley Lokko, di cui sicuramente cercherò altri libri, ha uno stile semplice e scorrevole che rende la lettura ancora più piacevole. Proprio bello.

Neden 5 Yıldız verdim? Uzun zamandır birkaç karakterin ayrı ayrı ele alınıp değerlendirilmesi tarzında bir kitap okumamıştım. Hep hoşuma gider. Burada çok yalan var temel yalanlar, çok sevgi var, çok tutku var! Anne Diana çok güçlü. Gelinler birbirinden farklı, kendilerini kabul ettirme çabasında. Ya üç oğul? Sonuç biraz düşünüp 5 yıldız.

Lots of twists and turns in this book which made it a real page turner. It took a while to get my head around the different characters in the beginning and I never knew what to expect as the story developed. I thought it ended a bit abruptly. Would have liked to find out what happened to all the couples. Maybe there's a 2nd book?

Lokko has a great writing style that makes you eagerly read the book to find out what happens in the last page. Family dramas are her fav plot and this book contains a great one
