This book puts Cheddar Man into a wider archaeological context and explains the scientific detective work behind the headlines which made him an international celebrity nine millennia after his death.
The front cover is a bit misleading. The local man featured is not necessarily a direct descendant of the ancient skeleton he is posing with: the DNA testing has only shown that they share a common ancestor. Nowhere is this important distinction made clear in the text.
This sums up the somewhat misleading nature of the book: although there is a quite a lot of interesting background information here, overall the book suffers from being too populist and lacking in academic rigour. Perhaps best considered as a useful introduction to fire the imagination of younger readers.
