Shaken by events in the closing days of the Civil War, young Dr. Quint Roberts flees the Union army to start a new life in Bozeman, Montana. In this seventh installment of the bestselling Mail Order Bride series, the challenge of reconstructing relationship losses is explored. When his brother is killed, Dr. Quint suddenly finds himself responsible for three young children. Can he alone provide for their needs? Annamarie Taylor -- a bereaved Southern belle in Atlanta -- also searches for answers to the age-old question, "Is anything too hard for the Lord?"
Al Lacy has written more than ninety novels, including the Angel of Mercy, Battles of Destiny, and Journeys of the Stranger series. He and his wife, JoAnna Lacy, are coauthors of the Mail Order Bride, Hannah of Fort Bridger, and Shadow of Liberty series. The Lacys make their home in the Colorado Rockies.
Al Lacy books are nostalgic for me, as we devoured them as teenagers, and I was interested to revisit his work and see what I thought now. Which makes me all the sadder to say they didn't age as well as I'd hoped they would. Rereading did help me to be more cognizant as an author of how daily life details are boring to read and how important it is to use historically correct terminology and culturally appropriate situations. (Here there were "teenagers," "mommy"s and even "preschooler"s!) For those who stopped reading Christian fiction because the old stuff was patronizing and preachy, let me tell you that Christian fiction today is nothing like this. I don't hate reading about traditional gender roles though, especially in a setting where they were the norm, unlike the books that try to rewrite history and make all the historical heroines feminists.
While I found this book slightly cheesy and predictable, I also agreed with all of the faith elements. As a born again believer myself, while I understood that the writers were showing others their faith, it was slightly overbearing how they bomb the reader with verse after verse. I myself am a writer and am trying to not bombard people with my faith but rather to present it in love...I guess I was annoyed with the writing style...I myself have slightly cheesy writing but am working on that. I must say that out of the many books I have read, NEVER have I disliked a writing style until now. It was too predictable also. I knew everything that was about to happen it seemed. Most books you have some idea, but not the whole picture. But LATER THAT DAY! Okay, so I finished the book now. You know, it's funny, as soon as I wrote that the novel was cheesy and predictable, it became less cheesy and not predictable, well, except for Paul showing up...I knew that would happen. But it was a really good story! If you like stuff about mail order brides, a favourite book of mine is "A Bride for Donnigan" by Janette Oke...it's simply amazing!

This story had so much potential! The plot was good, but the authors just didn't do a good job developing it. I felt that the book took a lot of time leading up to one point, and then like 2 chapters after that climax, the book was over. The ending was really rushed. Going into this book, I didn't have too high of expectations, but this book still disappointed me. The characters were unrealistic and and shallow. They didn't have any depth to them! I didn't feel like I really got to know the characters. Their feelings didn't go very deep. And the speech and attitude of the children in this book didn't fit with their age. Also, I felt that the amount of scripture used was overwhelming. As a believer myself, I enjoy feeling like I'm getting a lesson and some verses out of a book, but the scripture was just too much at some points. There were just pages of scripture with barely any dialogue or reason behind it. I felt like it could have been better used. (In some parts though, it was used wonderfully!!!) This book overall was just a let down.
On a brighter note, the authors' writing style was good. They had a good balance between being descriptive without being overly wordy :)
poorly written super-sappy Christian romance novel that has utterly failed even my low expectations of the genre. I assumed as this is a poupular series there might be some redeeming qualities, but so far, I can't get into it (4 chapters read)
