Röd åklagare

1985 antas Xiao som åklagarnotarie i en stad på den kinesiska landbygden. Hon är då endast arton år gammal. Platsen vid åklagarämbetet innebär att Xiao ska genomgå utbildning samtidigt som hon deltar i arbetet vid myndigheten.
Det Kina Xiao tjänar är ett hårt och kompromisslöst land. Dödsstraff är den givna utgången för någon som åtalas för mord. Men åklagarna själva måste också vara på sin vakt och riskerar hela tiden att komma på kant med samhället och maktapparaten.
I Röd åklagare berättar Xiao öppet om sin tid vid åklagarämbetet och de fall hon hade hand om. Här ges en skakande skildring av den kinesiska byråkratin inifrån och en insyn i en annars sluten värld. Man häpnar över de förhållanden som skildras och hur de kan förekomma i modern tid. Då Xiao i början av sin karriär mest fick ägna sig åt våldtäkts- och otuktsmål får vi också en intressant och skrämmande beskrivning av kvinnornas status i Kina.

Har sällan läst en så krass självbiografi. Intressant beskrivning av det kinesiska samhället och rättsväsendet. Man blir inte direkt sugen på att resa till Kina.

I don't really know what to say about this book. It's very difficult, because it's so complex. On one side, the book is easy; the main character, Xiao, fights for justice. On the other hand, she lives in a world so different from us, corrupted and harsh. There's no room for negotiation. I think I liked this book, even though some parts were awful. Not because of the book itself, oh no, but because of the events, they made me feel really bad. I'm glad the main character remained her steady self, aware of what happens in this world and how she still wants justice in the end. I think she did well, even though she was different from her colleagues.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in laws and other cultures. If you can't handle with awful stories, I wouldn't read this, if I were you. On the other side, today we are living in a world exposed to all those gruesome facts, so I think most people would say this isn't so bad.
I think it was. No one should ever say 'it is not bad' about horrible things happening to others. You never should.
A book you will never forget. It will continue living inside your memory and it will change your vision. At least it did for me.
