**Spoilers ahead, read at your own risk***
Ugh, worst book in the series. Thank goodness I'm done with the books I'd already bought and don't have to read anymore of this crap.
Originally I wasn't going to write any more about this book or this series, but the end has me so disgusted that I felt the need to rant a little...
So quick recap of who's who.
Valentine is the bitch manipulator in book 1 that leaves her companion twisting in the wind for 50 years because she doesn't want to turn anymore vampires, but that didn't stop her selfishly making him her companion and then ditching him.
Geoff is the brand new nighthawk in book 1 that Valentine takes under her wing after is girlfriend is murdered and he starts the change to nighthawk.
Jebel and Char are the heroes/romantic couple from book 2 that are together but don't have the companion bond because Char wants it to be his decision.
So at the end of the book, Jebel is about to die after sacrificing himself to kill the dragon, and Valentine "saves" him by pouring her blood down his throat, even though he doesn't want to do it because he loves Char. Now, because he's had Valentine's blood, he is going to be force him to be Valentine's companion and lover because of the brainwashing compulsion that comes with the blood and companion bond.
Of course Char doesn't get there until after its done, and Valentine has basically no remorse and is only unhappy that she hasn't gotten to take any of Jebel's blood since he was practically dead. But now Jebel "belongs" to her and she can't wait to take him off to bed.
And then there is slimy ass Geoff who is happy about this turn of events because he wants Char to himself... And can't wait for her to accept that Jebel "belongs" to Valentine now, and that she should be with Geoff for god knows how long until Jebel transitions to nighthawk.
Oh but wait it gets even better... in this series, once you change your companion into a vampire (which is the inevitable conclusion of all these relationships) you can't ever be lovers again because that would be incest... WTF... And apparently Valentine hasn't gotten around to explaining it yet, but nighthawks aren't supposed to be together either because they are all related back to her as the original nighthawk, making every one of them "brothers and sisters". So basically its against the "laws of the blood" for any of the vampires to be with each other and they need to keep searching out more human companions to love... Even though once they change they can't be together either... I mean seriously??? In book 3 they make this big deal about the main characters being soulmates but that's only until the change and then it doesn't matter anymore... Again WTF why even pretend to have soulmates if your going to force them apart.
The only good thing about the end of this book is that Valentine runs off to meeting with the ancient vampire in town and Geoff wanders off to steal some artifacts from the unguarded museum, giving Char the opportunity to grab Jebel and get the hell out of town. And since Valentine hasn't had Jebel's blood yet, the companion bond between them isn't complete, so Jebel and Char may still have the opportunity to make Jebel Char's companion and be together if they do it before the asshat Geoff catches up with them (sort of like what happened in book 4 when Andrew takes one of Olympius slaves and makes her his companion.). Of course if Char and Jebel do that, Valentine is probably going to kill them both because companions are property and in this world, it could be considered stealing Valentine's property if Jebel bonds to Char because that's what the law says slaves and companions are, just property.
But the real kicker to this series is that every book has a different set of main characters, so even though this book ends with this lame cliff hanger ending, there is no guarantee that the next book in the series will even tough upon any of these characters.
My guess is that this Char/Jebel/Valentine plot line will eventually be brought back up as part of the Companion Rights story arc that they've been mentioning in all of these books. But I won't bother wasting my time reading it.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
