The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
read this on break at work. these are as fun for me to read as they were 15 years ago (this was my favorite chapter book series). i was shocked at how well i remembered the characters and some of aj’s phrases that i use in my daily life such as “live and in person” etc. and also there are so many books now. i think this is a spin-off series to the original weird school series that is newer. anyways it was fun
These are the kind of books that 2nd and 3rd graders devour. Lots of silly word plays and humor that adults might roll their eyes at but kids simply eat up. In this installment, AJ and his friends are enrolled in the afterschool program and Mr. Tony is the leader/teacher of the group. In his effort to quite smoking, Mr. Tony is looking for ways to keep busy and possibly make it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Of course hilarity ensues. Gutman also uses some great word plays which teachers can use with English Language Learners to talk about language. And there are references to current events. Great book especially for this type of series.
Mr. Tony is full of baloney! is by Dan Gutman Is about how A.J. has to go to an after school kids care. Because his mom got a new job called the six moms. A.j. Ryan Michael Andrea Emily and Neils moms are in the six moms. They call the after school kids care ASKK, wich makes no sents at all because "care" is spelled with a C not A K. The boys are walking down to ASKK and are making ideas of how to escape ASkk. the director was on a pogo stick juggling because he wants to get into The Guinness Book of World Records "The record for pogo-juggling is almost 25 minutes. Mr. Tony has a nicotioe patch on because he is trying to quit smoking. Mr. Tony gave them stations but the boys didn't like the stations so Mr. Tony said they could make pizza. Maybe going to ASKK wasn't horrible after all said A.j. They got pillowcases for the food drive and went to houses and said "We're collecting food for hungry people" and soon there pillow cases were full. Mr. Klutz said "if you kids collect 3,000 pounds of food I'll jump out of a plane in an ape suit and land on the roof of the school." I would rate rate this book a 4 star because the nick names he gives it is funny. I would recommend this book to people that like funny books.
I thought it was funny because Mr. Tony was doing funny things all the time. Mr. Tony tries to break a lot of records. One of the records is carrying a spoon in your mouth with an egg on it. They called it egg-jogging. The boys in the book are sarcastic. I like the girls more because they're more calm and they're kind of like me because they love homework and I love homework. I think it's funny too because everyone gets shocked because their moms were all working together in a small company and it was called The Six Moms. And it's funny because A.J. and his mom are fighting about which things are more fancy because the six moms is a place where it's fancy. It has fancy sandwiches, but he's calling a regular sandwich fancy.
I'd tell a friend to read it because it's funny and it's great to read when you come home from school and there's nothing to do you can be like, "Oh, I can read this book."
Well, if you're going to take a glancing blow at addiction in a children's book.... I guess you could do worse?
I also wasn't a fan of the Six Moms subplot. Of course AJ in his crew think exclusively of themselves, but that gets translated into the moms not being allowed to have any identity outside of stay-at-home mom. I mean, really? ALL six moms are stay-at-home? None of them have any other business/job/volunteer duties that are just casually accepted as normal by the kids? Now THAT is weird.
Oh no AJ's mom just got a job, so he has to go to after school kids care. And Mr Tony the guy who runs it is crazy. He wants to get into the Geniuses book of the world records by making the world's largest pizza! Will AJ and the Gang be able to Tunnel out of the child care room and escape to freedom? Run for your lives!
DescriptionMr. Tony, the guy who runs the After School Kids' Kare program, is crazy. He wants to set a world record by making the world's largest pizza! Will A.J. and the gang be able to tunnel out of the child-care room and escape to freedom?
This book was confusing. Why so much talk about quitting smoking? Why would the principal put a gorilla suit on and jump out of a plane over a food drive? Why did the afternoon school program start exactly the same day that AJ's momma started her job?
I tought that this book was going to be about Mr. Tony eating a lot of baloney, but to my suprise it was not that at all. Mr.Tony was AJ's and his friends ASKK which stand for After-School Kids Kare teacher. Mr. Tony was always doing weird things like pogo-juggling and egg-jogging to keep himself busy so that he could stop smoking and try to get into The Guiuness Book of World Records. AJ and his friends didn't want to be in the ASKK program, until Mr. Tony showed them how to make pizza's which they had fun doing. Each day Mr.Tony would try to do something different with the students, but all they wanted to do was make and eat pizza. Once the student came up with the idea to try and get into the Guiness Book of World Record by making the biggest pizza, every body was excited even the students mother's helped. They all wanted to make Mr. Tony famous and help him to stop smoking. You know that it wansn't to long before something went wrong. Mr Klutz had made a deal with the students to collect 3,000.00 pounds of food for the hungry, and if they did he would jump out of a plane in a ape suit and land on a red bull's eye on top of the school. But you know it did not go as planded, Mr. Klutz landed in the big pizza, and Mr. Tony had to jump in and save him. So they didn't get into the Guiuness Book of World Records, but they all had fun trying anyway.
They are very funny, quick reads and although they are told from a boy's perspective, I think they would appeal equally to boys and girls. We are reading the books completely out of order, but it doesn't seem to matter.
The dialogue is fresh and the story is easy to read aloud. I do not like the instances where the word "dumbhead" is used, but I either change the word or mention how that it is a mean thing to say. We will certainly look for more of these stories at our local library.
The second and third graders at my school love these books. They like that they are funny and use words like "shut up" and "butt" as well as the exaggerated humor, some of which they don't always get. What I like about these books are the many idioms contained within each. It might be fun to make a class book about all the idioms and their meanings contained within each book...and you can also use this time, if you so choose, to address why using the words "shut up" and "butt" in school are frowned upon.
When AJ's mom just got a job.AJ has to go to After School KIds Kare teacher Mr.Tony.Who ruins the kare with his craziness.Mr.Tony is filled with baloneys. The after school kare is the school program. When AJ and his classmates gang up together to the child room.Like this book it teaches me a lot about self display. In Mr.Tony is full of baloneys and AJ's mom teams up with other moms to make a sandwich party they but baloneys on the sandwiches and mayo etc.
Mr. Tony is the after school program director. He wanted to be in the Big Book of World Records. He tried to build the biggest pizza in the world but if they donated three thousand pounds of food Mr. Klutz would jump out of an airplane and land on the school. By accident he landed on the pizza so they couldn't be in the Big Book of World Records. But it was on the News.
its about Mr.tony wants to break a Guinness Book of World Records by making the largest pizza but when their done and the lady from the book in charge of measuring is there Mr.Klutz in a ape suit ruins the pizza.so Mr.Tony couldn't be famous.
Surprised I didn't love this one like I have all the rest of this series. Felt like it was rushed. Usually I really like the quirky main character, but Mr. Tony just was not interesting. Dan Gutman slow down! Quality not quantity.
