There were no illustrations in my copy but I enjoyed the earnestness of the author's descriptions. He goes into the brief history of heraldry, including the Rolls of Arms and the parlance used in description.
I had this book on my kindle and did not really intend to read it. I had recently read another book about heraldry The Manual of Heraldry. a Concise Description of the Several Terms Used, and Containing a Dictionary of Every Designation in the Science on my kindle, and because the illustrations were not included, it was a disappointing read. So I started skimming this book with the intention of giving it a light perusal and moving on to the next book. However, I found the history and illustrations in this book so engaging that I completed most of it. There are parts in the middle where the details become so intense that only someone whose looking for specific details on heraldry would be interested, but the history of England summarized in various chapters of the book is more thorough than any other source that I (as an American) had run across before. I found that I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in its entirety.
