In this inspiring and candid autobiography, Cec Thompson, one of Rugby League's all-stars and the first African-American in the League, tells his compelling story of humble beginnings and eventual sporting triumphs. Over the course of 30 years, Thompson transformed himself from a functioning illiterate into a respected teacher and successful businessman.
I am biased towards a 5 star review because Cec Thompson in just a few hours of interaction in schoolboy life helped me understand that prejudice comes in many forms as do challenges.
There were other good teachers who tolerated a bedraggled teenager. But Cec realised something was wrong from his experience of life and asked why ?
If he had not intervened in an episode of my life I might never have made it through a few disasters of life.
Cec came to see me after I was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
I am sad to say a decade ago when he died I was in the middle of another life changing disaster but again I was able to fight through.
Cec was an inspiration and showed that despite the past the future is what you make of it
