I think I learned stuff I didn't know about malaria, but I'm really not sure. I do know that Marcus is fond of calling things "ironic" that aren't in the least bit ironic. I also know that he got many of his facts wrong. For example, he says that "anthropoid" means "ape-like." I guess this makes anthropology the "study of apes." Also, he claims that sickle-cell disease is the only thing that gives complete immunity from malaria, when it only imparts partial protection from the disease. In fact, recent research has suggested that sickle-cell trait may only give nominal, at best, protection against malaria. Perhaps this series would benefit from having scientists with real expertise in infectious diseases write these books.
