"was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands; we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies. It's a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of control. There's an air of lassitude there, a general acceptance of eccentic or flamboyant behavior--the heat simply makes people do crazy things.

I went to school in New York, and after school went back to New Orleans. Then I went back to New York (Manhattan) and got a job in publishing and started writing. My first book, a young, middle-grade chapter book, was published in 1990.

Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn't have a lot of money. There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch. There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with. After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

(While I was in NY, I helped edit "The Secret Circle" by L.J. Smith. I thought it was great.)

We stayed in New Orleans five years. By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live. I was glad my children were born in New Orleans--I had been born there, and my father had, and his father had, and his father had and so on. There was something about the connection of generations of blood coming from one place that I found very primal and important.

Now I live in a cohousing community in Durham, NC. This is the most suburban place I've ever lived, and it's very different from living right in the middle of a city. For one thing, there aren't enough coffee shops. However, it's incredibly safe, and the community is very important to me. There are a lot of strong women here, and I find them inspiring.

Am I a witch? Well, no. Even Wicca is too organized a religion for me. I'm much more idiosyncratic and just need to do my own thing, which is kind of new-agey and pantheistic. It's not that I don't work or play well with others, but I need to decide for myself when I do a certain thing, and how I do it. However, I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman-centeredness and its essentially female identity. I love those aspects, among others.

I have several favorite writers. Barbara Hambly has been the biggest influence on how I describe magic. She's an incredibly imaginative and empathetic writer with a gift for creating a rich, sensual world. I love Barbara Pym, an English writer whose books came out mostly in the fifties. She was a master at describing the thousand tiny moments that make up a woman's day; how the seemingly small and inconsequential thing can suddenly take on a huge emotional importance. I greatly admire P.D. James. She's one of the very few writers who makes me actually look up words in the dictionary. She has a beautiful, precise, educated command of the language that leaves me in awe. I love Philip Larkin's poetry. I read a lot of nonfiction and also have some favorite romance writers. Before anyone groans, let me say that these women write really well about women trying to achieve emotional fulfillment, and that's kind of what we're all doing, right? I also just like reading about sex. Anyway, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and early Linda Howard are my faves.

And then of course there's my dark side, but more on that later.

Re-read 10/25/18: This series hasn’t aged quite as finely as I had hoped it would, but I still REALLY enjoyed it and will definitely be making my way through the rest of it over the next few months. Especially since Hunter is the OG Aaron Warner and I will not be told otherwise lmao

I first read this series when I was about 12, and I ADORED it. It was taken out of my public library due to poor circulation (so sad), so I forgot about it until I came across it on Amazon a little over a year ago. I couldn't find it in any public library system anymore, so I decided on a whim to buy the entire series (which I ended up getting for about 30$). I read the entire series last summer and was blown away. I had completely forgotten the entire thing with the except of Morgan being a witch. That was pretty much it.

I loved it all over again. I absolutely adore the first 6 books of the series, and then I feel like it loses a little of its momentum in the middle and then really picks up again at the end. There are so many great twists and turns, fantastic character development, and I felt that it is extremely believable (minus the over-exaggeration of Wiccan magick).

I loved that they were easy to read without feeling like I was reading a book written for a 13 year old. I loved the incorporation of Wiccan practices (I'm Christian, btw) and how we get to experience it as Morgan learns so much of it for the first time. I think it's great that some of the books are written from other character's perspectives which keeps them interesting and fresh.

I would absolutely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal or coming-of-age novels.

********* SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES *************

I did get a little sick of the dark wave showing up left and right. It just seemed like it always came back to "Look, we've defeated someone! And they were trying to do a dark wave! Oh crap it's still going to happen!" And I found that aspect of it a little too repetitive.

Goodreads!! Most of my old Shelfari reviews are missing! WHY?! (T_T)

SWEEP I: Love. Danger. Magick.

Book 1: Book of Shadows
Morgan isn't a special girl or so she thought; she is loved by her friends and family, her life is basic and normal until a new guy enrolls in their school in the beginning of their school year named Cal. He is every girls' crush including Morgan. He befriends every clique in high school and invites them to a party where he introduces them to wicca and magick! Morgan is more than intrigued and it's not only about Cal for her, magick calls to her. She buys books, learns more and even does a spell that works, her obsession send her into a revelation that she is not who she thinks she is.

Book 2: The Coven
So Cal finally kissed Morgan, his intentions and those of his mother are obviously not pure especially that we learn that Morgan is adopted, a Blood Witch and is descended from a very powerful clan. Bree and Raven and many other girls hate Morgan who they view as less than them and wonder how she caught Cal, Morgan wonders about that as well, but her emotions blind her judgment. The spell she worked on Robbie turns out to be amazing and her magick too powerful; her family doesn't accept that and don't want any part of it. Morgan learns more about her birth mother Maeve.

Book 3: Blood Witch
Morgan discovers that Cal's mom Selen hided her birthmother's Book of Shadows, she claims it and learns many things about her mother, family and origins: She is a Woodbanes, but her clan revoked evil Wicca, unlike Cal, who happened to have a step-brother who evokes the strongest feelings in her, who also is a Seeker hunting wicked witches like his name "Hunter", Hunter has a friend, her name is Sky and she makes a new coven with Bree and Raven joining her, looking to dissolve Cal's coven. Morgan misses Bree but doubts her especially when someone runs her over the road. Then she scries in fire like her mom used to and finds her tools. Meanwhile her sister is dating a guy who attacks her and she sends a witch's bolt to hurt him, she also helps her friend Jenna who has asthma, and discovers that Raven and Matt (Jenna's boyfriend) have an affair, also that Robbie has been in love with Bree for years. By the end, I think Morgan must suspect that Cal is using a charm and love potion on her, controlling her and her powers.

This review was completed by Amanda Harbin, staff reviewer with the YA Fantasy Guide.

Overview of Volume 1:

I made a mistake with this book(s). Usually, when I read a series of books I find that it is best to read and review each book as I go, otherwise plots and characters get a little screwy in my head. Well, I’m good and screwy on this one because I read the first book, then because I lack any self control whatsoever, I dove right into the second book, then the third, the fourth, the fifth…oh yes…all the way to book NINE before I slammed on the brakes and forced myself to STOP reading. This book is/was like an addiction. I need rehab! So, long story short I really like this book, volume, series, etc.

You might be wondering why I have rated it as a 4/5 instead of a 5/5, so let me get that out of the way first, I actually don’t have anything bad to say about the book. It’s just that for a book to hit 5/5 for me it has to have emotional depth as well as be a delicious read. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this is a shallow series; on an emotional depth level it leaves other YA series in the kiddie pool. It’s just that it never really gets to the deep end, and that’s actually okay, because if it tried to, it would stop being such a terrifically fun read. This author does a phenomenal job of walking that ever so finicky line of not taking oneself to seriously while still being clever. If I had to liken it to anything I would say it’s like one of those state fair apples that’s dipped in caramel, rolled in M&M’s, redipped in chocolate, then rolled in nuts. It’s mostly junk food but deep down there’s a nutritious apple, which is how you rationalize eating the whole thing, in one sitting. Okay, now you’re all probably trying to figure out whether you want to read or eat…sorry.

Book 1 – Book of Shadows

This was a great introduction to the series and the characters. Most of the characters are worthwhile and well developed in the sense that they behave in ways that I would expect kids their age to behave. Their poor decision making skills and the resulting consequences reflect the sometimes tenuous friendships of high school girls. I like that the characters possibly with the exception of Raven, are not caricatures of people. They come across as sincere and this is very important to my reading experience.

Wicca itself is a kind of character and the introduction of Wicca is at first believable, which under many circumstances would make the transition into a fantasy version of witchcraft a little awkward. There was one moment in particular (I won’t say when) that I kind of went “….ummm really???” but it passed easily enough and after that it was smoother sailing into the more fantastic realms of witchcraft.

Book 2 – The Coven

This book pushes the reader and the main characters deeper into the realm of witchcraft, while also developing some important character conflicts. In this book my distrust and dislike of Cal as a character deepened. Every time I thought that I had caught him in something, I turned out to be wrong, but I know he’s not all he’s cracked up to be. The characters, friendships, romances and triangles balance each other nicely. This makes it difficult to completely take sides in the conflicts even though you want to be rooting for Morgan; it was hard to fully disqualify the emotions of the other characters. I liked that I couldn’t always root for Morgan, it helps keep her character real in the midst of all of the fantasy. The element of witchcraft really starts to develop in this book. In terms of Wicca as a religion, I like that Morgan has to struggle with her identity as a Catholic and as a Wiccan, but sometimes the line between her fantasy witch heritage and her choice to be a Wiccan seem kind of non-descript and I would have liked to have seen the choice to pursue the Wiccan religion be more about her belief system and less about her bloodlines. The conflict with her parents as a result of Wicca is believable and helps to propel the story.

Book 3 – Blood Witch

While books 1 & 2 were a lot of background information and conflict set – up, the third installment of the series brings on the action. Two characters that were briefly introduced in the second book make bigger appearances and are definitely here to stay. I know that I am supposed to dislike them, but I can’t help but like and trust them, which is confusing because Cal has been a pretty decent guy thus far. Throughout the series the author uses the journal entries of other character to illuminate their point of view, but in a clever twist, the journals are all signed with the characters Wiccan name, this works because it allows the reader to see other sides of a story without completely giving away the stories secrets. This was especially true in this book. I was certain I knew who was writing each entry, but since I couldn’t be completely certain I was left guessing about some of the characters intentions.

This final book in the volume was a great end, because I was so involved in the nail biting action of the end, I had to know what happened next and instead of waiting for it to come in from the library….I ordered it from my Kindle….Ahhhh instant gratification….and well you know how it went from there!

This is a bind-up version of sweep series. 1) Book of Shadows; 2) The Coven; 3) Blood Witch

I am surprised that I was able to finish this book. It took me 5 days to read it and it is so frustrating because I endured reading that long and yet the book did not get any better. I think the writing is too juvenile. Hate the characters… Morgan is so annoying, and sometimes selfish. Cal is arrogant and I did not like him at all. Mostly the characters are too childish and irritating.

I think the plot has a lot of potential, the Wicca stuff is good and the mystery involved with it. However it is not executed properly. There are no good explanations about the Wicca stuff. Or it was not explained further. I found it weird when Cal invited them into a party and then out of the blue he decided to perform the ritual. WTF??? Just like that? No reasons or explanations about that stuff and the kids just jump in with the idea. Are they that stupid? I don’t know but I find it to weird for my standards. Reading this book is like I’m reading a Cult forming. With that nonstop Wicca ritual and stuffs. The books are short and I’m kind of expecting it to get better after the second book. The third book really frustrates me. There is no development in the plot, yeah Morgan discovers something about her past but I don’t think it suffice the need for good plot development.

I completely wasted my time reading this book. Heard so many great things about it but I am not one of those who love this series. The only good thing about it though, I bought it a bind up book so I only paid it for the price of one.

I read the Sweep series for the first time last year, around this time. While my husband was away at Basic Training, I finally had peace and quiet to finally read! And it was this series that got me back into reading again. So in that sense, this series will always have a special place in my heart. And besides that, it's a pretty awesome series!

I could related a lot to Morgan. I grew up Catholic but I never really thought I fit in there, it just never really felt like it was for me. I was always interested in Greek Mythology and their goddesses and gods, ironic. A few years ago, I decided I didn't want to be Catholic anymore. I was looking into Wicca and Paganism, my mom questioned me about it about a year or so ago and she was not happy when I said I was Pagan. He exact words were "You're lost. It's not nice to hear that, you need to find yourself." I was offended, but I expected her to say something like that. So I could imagine how Morgan feels about her parents not wanting her to dabble into Wicca. And like her parents, mine won't hear me out. And while we're still on the subject of her parents, I think keeping a very important secret from her was just wrong. Not to mention the way they reacted!

I'm not a fan of Bree, I think she's incredibly selfish and self absorbed. She just, annoys me.

I love the twists and mysteries in this series, it always gives me anxiety, but good anxiety! I do highly suggest this series, it's a great read and cover a religion that I think is commonly misunderstood!

TW: death of a loved one, fire/fire injury, (minor) sexual content.

Not rating this one because it doesn’t really fit into a rating category.

My mom and sister have been trying to convince me to start this series and I’m finally (sorry, guys) getting around to it. Super fun, easy read that has aged surprisingly well for when it was released? (it still has some issues, but they’re pretty minor.)

All in all, I had fun so I can’t really complain. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I have mixed feelings about this series. Maybe I waited too long to read it, I probably would’ve been smitten if I’d read it in highschool. I do know this bind up wasn’t BAD and packs a lot of interesting information into each of the three books. However, most of the dialogue and utterly obnoxious teenage drama was a huge turn off of the series for me. I’m not sure yet whether or not I’d like to continue onto the next bind up. We shall see.

Hm.
I'm not going to get that much into it.
I didn't connect with the characters and therefore I didn't care. AT ALL.
I didn't care for the characters, for the story and I don't care how the story continues. I'm honestly quite surprised that I finished it that fast. I mean I don't quit books. I belong to those who force themselves to finish a book. I guess the only good thing that comes to my mind is that it was fast-paced and easy to read. But overall it was a total letdown.
My reactions throughout the whole book were:
''Aha. I don't care. Hmm-mm...I still don't care. I don't like her, I don't like him and SURPRISE I don't care what happens to either of them. ''

In general it's not a bad book, I think if I'd have connected with the characters I would have enjoyed it. Sadly, I didn't.

This book is about a girl named Morgan Rowland s. She was a normal teenager, starting her senior year of high school, with the same group of friends. Everything was normal to her in widow's val. Until Cal Blair moved to town. Cal was the hot kid at school everyone liked him, including morgan, and her best friend. Cal was also the cool kid, Cal was also a witch. He practiced the religion of Wicca and most found it stupid or scary. Morgan and several others found it magikal ( and no the spell is correct) . Morgan is known as the star student in Cal's circle but also the crazy one too. She has strange headaches and gets dizzy even sees peoples auras. The more and more morgan does magik with Cal the more the discorves she changing along with other things around her .for the better or worse is the question?

Being a person who supports the Wiccan religion i believe this book is also a good way for people to learn about the religion in a cool way. While reading this book i also found new things out too, like Wiccan runes and the seven great clans. I also think the book is a very interesting book, there is many twists and turn, lots of fighting and also love. You don't have to be into to read this book by the way, if you don't know something it easily explains what is is. For example morgan talks about seeing auras, then cal explains that their people energy displayed in colors around them only certain witches can see thins. I think more girls than boys would like this book because most of it is in the opinion of a girl and her falling in love with someone and the struggle she goes through. I think most girls would like this book because it defiantly is a good love book along with a good Wiccan book. To me best of both worlds. :)

I give this book 4 stars only because the way the last fight ended was kind of ... boring? i guess, the final fight wasn't as great as i expected it defiantly ended in a big cliff hanger, but i guess that makes you want to read the next book which i defiantly do! I also think some one the author describes 7 clans was to short, and i wanted to read more, but i understand that she didn't wanting it turning into an information book. All in all i give this book a 4 and recommend it to most girls but if guys wanna read it to i say go ahead.

This book was supper fun do to the Wicca elements. While reading this all I wanted was to have magic and discover Wicca as did Morgan. However, the romance and friendship were very tropish and immature. Also knowing the plot twist of the second book I couldn't help but roll my eyes. It also took me like 3 weeks to read the last 35 pages, I kinda just thought it dragged so in the future I wont read the whole bind up.

Okay, Cal is shady as hell. I want to like Morgan but she's so naive when it comes to him. I don't like how little answers this book gave though. You'd expect them to at least answer some questions but it's like this series has to be read as one big book.

Reread from when this was first published in the UK (2001?) via Puffin under the series name of "Wicca", not "Sweep". It hasn't aged well, but is a light, fast beach read.

*

Write-up taken from The Pewter Wolf

Morgan Rowlands is an ordinary girl in the small New York state town of Widow’s Vale. She has a loving family, great friends - till Cal and his mother moves to town. Cal becomes the centre of attention and invites several students to a house warming party - including Morgan and best friend, Bree. Expect this house warming party ends with Cal revealing he and his family study Wiccan and he invites his peer to do a circle to celebrate Mabon. Morgan and Bree start and Morgan slowly begins to realise that she has a connection to Wicca, and the more her connection to Wicca grows, the closer she grows to Cal even though Bree has fallen for him…

But where will Morgan’s newfound connection to Witchcraft take her?

So… thoughts!

Ok, this is a reread and I only read up to book three in the series, but I remember devouring these books (even though the UK covers are… well… I’ll show you!) and I’m not sure what made me decide I fancy rereading these, but am kinda glad I did as they were a perfect summer beach read. They are light, easy to read stories. They are a bit of what I would say is a candy-floss read - addictive to read and yet nothing too heavy. Due to this and the size of the font and each instalment, I could quite easy say I could read this by the pool within a day if left to my devices.

Now, I do have one or two things I want to talk about. I might not be the bets person to point these out but I want to put them out there.

As I was reading this volume with all the instalments, I couldn’t help thinking that these instalments were quite short and fast and felt, at times, like chapters or episodes in a TV show. I researched a little and realised that this series was connected to Alloy Enterainment, the people behind Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, The Secret Circle and The 100. With this in mind, it makes sense to me that I made the connect of “This could work as a TV show similar to Vampire Diaries or Pretty Little Liars”. When this was being created, this could have been in mind for several people within the book packaging company.

The second thing I want to mention is that I can’t escape the feeling that this hasn’t aged well. Ok, I get that this was first published in the early 2000, when YA was beginning to find its feet. But you can tell this was written and published when YA was beginning to find its voice (remember,Twilight by Stephenie Meyer wasn’t published till 2005) and trying to fill the void between the releases of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2003). Some of the troupes and characters attitudes are outdated - and I will given an example in my next paragraph.

The third and final thing I want to talk about is Cal, the main romantic lead in these three books. I remember when I first read these that I got caught up in the romance. I got swept along with it, very much in the same way I do with Bella’s and Edward’s romance in Twilight. And, similar to Twilight, when you take a step back and look at the male leads, you notice that their behaviour is a little disturbing. A good example of this is a scene in Book of Shadow. After the characters do a circle (their second, I believe), they decide to skinny dip in Cal’s swimming pool. Morgan doesn’t want to do it and says no. Cal asks and, when she refuses to change her mind, walks out of the pools, picks her up and carries her into the pool, while she is fully clothed and still saying no. He ignores her contest and, if I read that in an up-to-date novel, I would expect someone to call Cal out of his behaviour but no one does. Not even Morgan’s best friend, Bree. Teens now are more vocal on issues, so the fact that this happened and not one person thought what Cal was doing was wrong is very worrying. Plus, I can’t help but feel that, reading this as a thirty-something, that Cal is quite emotionally manipulative. Maybe this is going to be addressed in the next volume, but I can’t help wondering why male romantic leads in early 2000 teen fiction have unhealthy traits.

So, am I going to get the Sweep: Volume 2, which will have books 4, 5 and 6 (I believe the titles of these are Dark Magick, Awakening and Spellbound)? I think I will. Now, I stopped reading this series at book 3 for some reason so, if I do continue forward, I will be entering new territory so will be intrigued/nervous to see what’s going to happen next… But if I do decide to read on, I think I will read this bind-up in a similar way to how I plan to read my The Modern Faerie Tales: Tithe; Valiant; Ironside by Holly Black and The Chrestomanci Series: Entire Collection series by Diana Wynne Jones, which is read one novel at a time…

Besides Harry Potter, this is my second favorite fantasy series! A must to re-read every couple of years. One of the few books I can actually read fast. I use this as my brain hack so I can restart my reading habits so I can read other books (in other words: new) more easily. Unfortunately, I 'forget' the book I intended to read after this and always start to read the rest of this series.. oops!

Probably the 20th time I read this series. That is just 50 times less than HP. It's very comforting to reread books you've discovered when you were a teenager <3

I usually don't go for these kinds of books, but i do love a good witch story. I bought this series not expecting much from it, but i finished all 5 volumes (15 books) in roughly 2 weeks.

When i started the series i thought it was going to focus on romance the whole time and portray Morgan (the main girl), as nothing but a teenage girl who's goal is to find her own prince charming. I was proven wrong. Throughout the series you see Morgan struggle with aspects of her life - whether that be school or typical teenage problems, being a witch, or the fact that her life isn't turning out the way she thought - and I quickly became enraptured in finding out what happened next. While the story does have romance aspects, i found myself enjoying the rare moments of joy that Morgan actually got to experience. Additionally, I felt the heart ache that Morgan felt during some of her struggles. I also felt that Cate done an excellent job of keeping me enthralled in the story, to the point i had read a whole book and it hadnt felt like it. While some of the plot is predictable - maybe more so to an older audience - i was still at the end of my seat reading what was happening, and finding myself panicking when i thought Morgan was getting herself into a situation she might not get out of.
I had my reservation when i reached the final book of the series, and it was slightly tedious at the beginning, but once again Cate was able to captivate me again and the book was finished in one night, even though i could have read on. I feel that the final book did a good job of rounding up Morgan's life and how the challenges she faced helped her become the woman that she is at the end.

eh wtf did I just read? i was so exctied to read this serie because i loved tiernans other serie. But I got really disapointed, the characters are childish and selfish. I disliked morgan, she was so annoying cause she was so insecure with herself. She was just a plain girl who followed a popular girl. the whole book was soo unrealistic, a new boy make a circle and says that he is a freaking blood witch and everyone accept that anf doesn’t think that weird... and Morgan out of the blue starts to like the new boy Cal who also is the witch. okay i don't know what to say anymore.
even tho i didn't like the first volume i am actually gonna read the next book cause I read in the comments that this serie is gonna be better when Cal is out of the picture as you can say or out of the book I guess.

blah!! I think this has got to be the most boring book I've ever read! The characters were boring, the plot was predictable and just when you think tiernan is leading up to something profound, it fizzles with something rediculously unimaginative. I honestly have no idea how on earth this book got the ratings it has.

The book was great. It kept me reading and wanting to know more. But in my opinion I kept getting irritated with the main character because she doesn’t get all of the information she should. She’s too naive, too trusting lol. But I’ll be reading the rest of the volumes because it really was a pretty good book.

**SERIES REVIEW - Reviews don't differ between each book**

The Sweep series follows the story of Morgan Rowlands, a teenage girl who discovers her witch heritage and learns how to use her powers while navigating the challenges of love, friendship, and family. The series I have read is the omnibus style, with three of the original 15 book "Wicca" series books that have been made into 5 longer books.

The series begins with "Book of Shadows," where we are introduced to Morgan, a high school student who leads a fairly ordinary life until she meets Cal Blaire, a handsome and mysterious new student who awakens her magical abilities. As Morgan delves deeper into the world of witchcraft, she becomes entangled in a dangerous love triangle between Cal and Hunter Niall, an International Council of Witches Seeker sent to investigate Cal and his mother for misuse of magic. It follows all the way through two years of Morgan's life and her discovery of heritage and friendship, ending the series with a happily ever after. An added bonus to the series is the "standalone" Wicca Book - Night's Child, which is centered around Morgan's daughter decades later.

Throughout the series, Tiernan masterfully weaves together themes of love, betrayal, loyalty, and self-discovery. Morgan's journey is compelling and at times, relatable, as she struggles to balance her responsibilities as a witch with her desire for a normal life. The supporting characters, including Morgan's best friend Bree, her coven, and her love interests Cal and Hunter, are fully fleshed out and add depth to the story.

Tiernan's writing style is engaging and immersive, with vivid descriptions of magic and the natural world. The pacing of the series is well-balanced, with moments of intense action and suspense alternating with quieter moments of introspection and character development.

Overall, Sweep is a captivating series that will appeal to fans of young adult fantasy and romance. Tiernan's skillful storytelling, richly-drawn characters, and evocative setting will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Perfect for teen readers, as younger readers may not understand the heavier life challenges facing Morgan. This series has always been one of my comfort reads, having read all of them since their release in 2001 when I was a sweet little teenager - I used to lock myself away and read them one after another over the course of a few days, having them permanently borrowed by borrowing and returning then borrowing again from my local library. Eventually, as an adult I was able to purchase the 5 book copies and still read them now in my 30's.

Sweep vol.1⭐⭐1/2 (Look! A Cardboard Boyfriend!)

Story:
I read the first book when I was 14 and loved it back then! This is how I feel today;
Morgan is a normal high school student. Just kidding! She’s actually a witch, and did not know it before a delicious looking guy moved into town and invited her and friends to a circle! Wow.. How exciting.. What do you mean my tone is dripping with sarcasm?
No, this book has not aged well since I read it years ago.. Every theme I grew tired of during my teens is here in one neat edition. Top of that list is ”High school drama”. But overlooking the mean best friend and the other ”let’s make this an issue because teenagers are nasty creatures” parts, the story is not too terrible. Or at least, I like the Wicca stuff and would like to see where it goes.

Characters:
I’m not sure they have much of any personalities except for the roles they have in the book. Hot guy, evil bitch, supportive friend etc.. And all the conflicts centres around the new guy at school that is just perfect and everyone wants. And he happens to have as much personality as cardboard outside the fact that he’s into Wicca. Morgan herself is just oh so sweet, special and misunderstood. Bleh! She bores me to tears.
Sometimes there’s an effort to make it look like they are more, but that fails harder than hot-dog flavoured ice cream(It’s a real thing!). The characters did become a bit more interesting towards the end of the book, but that was way to late to save the book. But hopefully the next one will have some more depth.

Conclusion:
It mostly feels shallow and nostalgic in the bad way. But it’s not so bad that I can’t read the rest of the series. There are some things that can be really fun if the story will focus on them and not the overdramatic and fake-feeling teenage drama.
But there’s two key points to me having problems with the book. And that is that we don’t have the same school system here in Sweden, so I can’t relate on a personal level with the social structure of that hellish-sounding place. Also, I might just be too old for this shit. If you’re a teenager or like high school dramas, give it a go! I loved the first book when I read it the first time. 2,5 stars from me, but I can see why others might love this.

Wow! I really REALLY liked this book! So you’re probably wondering why the 4 stars instead of 5? Well, I’ll start with the good stuff.

First of all, the book is so easy written that you’ll just sweep threw the pages. At times I had to force myself to stop reading! I also loved the storyline. It wasn’t just like “BAM” it happened. Everything was nicely built up. For the characters, I normally have a hard time with them. In some books they’ll have zero personality and in some books they’re just too much. But Cate did a really good job with them in this book. I liked that she really took the time to introduce them to us. This allowed me to empathize with them quickly. I just wished Morgan was more confident. I hate that she just lets some things go. It makes me sad but I do understand her thinking. I just hope that she’ll gain more confidence in the next book and that she stands up for herself!

——- SPOILER ——-

—————————-

So the thing that bothered me the most was Morgans “relationship” with Cal. From Morgans perspective it just seemed like she was obsessed over him. Everytime she’d discover something or she’d feel upset or even just happy about something, she would start about Cal and be like:”Cal would make me feel better” or “I can’t wait to tell Cal about this” and “I want Cal here”. These things repeated itself every chapter, so after a while I was like “okay, I GET IT. You like him, gosh”.

The thing with Cal is that I don’t trust him. Like not a tiny bit. I was skeptical in the beginning about their “relationship”. They saw each other a few times and talked and then all of sudden he likes her so much and wants to be with her and all that crap. But I was like, okay, MAYBE their “relationship” will develop over the next few chapters and I’ll be like OEH I LOVE IT! But no. The more I got into the book, the more I realised he’s a lying, manipulative and controlling person. And this got confirmed when Hunter showed up.

As for now, I’ll be starting volume 2 and hoping that Morgan will open her eyes and see Cal for what he is. A shitbag.

I have a problem. I loved this omnibus to pieces. But there is a major, and i mean MAJOR, plot inconsistency between book two and three. I'm putting it behind a spoiler tag.

.

Oh, you mean the author forgot her own plotting? WHERE WAS THE COPY EDITOR ON THIS, Y'ALL??

I just cannot let that slide. It completely ruined the entire end of the third book for me, and so I am knocking off an entire star. This book was originally published in 2001. This omnibus volume came out in 2010. NINE years passed and nobody caught this. It is INEXCUSABLE.

I have the second volume of this so I will read that and then decide if I want to continue. I adored Balefire by this same author, so I hope there are no more mistakes of that magnitude because shit like this makes me seriously RAGE.
