The Crystal Locket is a collection of nine folk tales. All of the stories are centered about the experiences of a famous crystal locket. This locket is a priceless heirloom, is still in existence and, like Hitty, has had a very interesting live.

Mostly charming, save for one egregiously racist story complete with happy singing from slave cabins and insensibility regarding watermelons. The bulk of the stories concern fairies and mermaids and the like. I ordered it through Inter-Library Loan because I wanted to see Enright's illustrations. They were recognizably Enright, but looked stiff as compared to her work in the Melendy books.

Enright's illustrations are so lovely, they were the best part of the book, for me.

With the exception of "A Southern Story"- being racially problematic
the stories were sweet adventure fairy tales.
