The book looks at how people have used Volksbuch along with folk wisdom in early America. It also discusses some of the superstition associated with books (sleep with book under head to gain knowledge, how to handle the bible, etc.). The book mostly covered how printed books can be talismans and tools for fortune-telling.
A rather dry and scholarly exploration of how books and book culture register in folklore, Hayes' book covers some interesting topics, but they're so diverse that some chapters will likely register as more exciting than others to most general readers.
