Comics legend Stan Lee offers his own interpretation of Wonder Woman's origin. We meet Maria Mendoza, a young idealist angered by the way her homeland of Peru has been stripped of its ancient treasures and its people tortured by the sinister Senor Guitez. When Maria discovers an ancient staff, which transforms her into a paragon of power the likes of which the world has never known, she becomes the only force powerful enough to save her culture from Senor Guitez.
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
WW is reimagined as the avatar of the gods of ancient Peru. One of the more innovative books in this series - this character could really stand on her own should DC ever decide to build on this 'Stanverse'. What a blast it would be if DC started their own What If...? series and used JISL as part of it! The Jim Lee cover is stunning!
Only Stan Lee could write a book in the early 2000’s and still make it feel like it should have been released in the ‘60s. I’m only giving this three stars because Jim Lee’s art is genuinely stunning, and it is cool seeing him and Stan work together.
I really can’t say I like Stan Lee’s writing though, I’m in my 20’s so I have no love or fond memories of this dude or his writing. I don’t get nostalgic reading any of this drivel, as it just feels dated. But if you like this, I’m not knocking you. I just personally don’t get anything except boredom out of this.

In 2000, Stan Lee still writes like its the 1960's, with incredibly simplistic (and, honestly, a little tired) plotlines. I'll give him credit for the unique setting. That and Lee's art are what made it an entertaining read.
