Barlett #4

Bartlett and the Island of Kings

Rate this book
The latest chronicle of Odo Hirsch's popular adventurers. Kids love the way Bartlett, Jacques and Gozo solve the riddles of the people encountered on their great voyages of discovery.

Stay close, Bartlett whispered.

Gozo rolled his eyes. What did Bartlett think he was going to do?

The bird calls and rustling continued all around them. Branches swayed, shadows wavered. Was that a person flitting past them over there? Or there? Or there?

When Bartlett, Gozo and Jacques le Grand arrive on an island far off in the ocean, they have no idea what they ll find. Awaiting them are four kings, a towering volcano, and a strange, shadowy man who appears in a flash of light and disappears in a cloud of smoke. And underlying everything is a dark secret that no one will reveal. As the volcano comes to life, the three explorers must use all their legendary Inventiveness, Desperation and Perseverance and all the help they can get to uncover the truth and find their way home.

My copy of this book is considerably less battered and well-thumbed than the other Bartlett books. Yes, it's the last of the series and at that stage I was old enough to read things that were more "advanced", but the former books were so well-written that that wouldn't have stopped 11 year old me enjoying this one, but it's just not as enjoyable as the others.

The Bartlett books are reliably good, and this is no exception. A little less focussed on problem solving than other books in the series, but still driven by the thoughtfulness of the characters. Good fun.
