Something Wicked

Rate this book
In her new Living in Eden novel, Michelle Rowen proves that being a little wicked isn't all bad...

Every woman has a sexy demon inside her just waiting to get out, but for Eden Riley it's a little different. Her inner demon is named Darrak, and he's been inhabiting bodies for the past three hundred years. In the daytime, thanks to her special psychic energy, he's able to take physical shape—a shape she wouldn't mind getting her hands on, it it wasn't a threat to her immortal soul...

Because of her possession, Eden now has uncontrollable black magic at her fingertips, and she and Darrak are trying to end the curse that binds them before the situation gets any worse. To do it, they'll have to get tangled up with some unsavory characters from the underworld. When sparks and spells fly, they could get the distance they need...or each will have their own private hell to pay.

Review originally posted at Fiction Vixen.

I was so nervous to read this book! Things were settled to a point in the last book, The Demon in Me, but a lot of larger issues were still up in the air. Darrak and Eden still needed to find a way to separate without hurting either one of them, and they needed to find a way to break Darrak’s curse if they had any hope of ever trying to have a relationship.

I wanted to watch it all unfold, but I was worried that the author would drop the ball and I would end up disliking it. That’s not a slur against the author’s skill, that’s just my history with some other series making me skittish. So, I entered the book with mixed feelings but soon found myself just as into it as I was the first book.

I practically inhaled this book. The author has an extremely readable style and the pages just flew by for me. I reread the last quarter of The Demon in Me before starting this so I would be fresh. It was actually really helpful because I didn’t realize I had forgotten so many of the little details that happened at the end! I think skimming it again really enhanced my experience with this book. I was so much more attached and in the moment.

Darrak was such a fabulous character in the last book. For all those who read it, never fear, you won’t be disappointed with his personality in this one! I am pleased to report that he is just as funny and just as reluctantly caring as he was in the first one. His banter and inner dialogue just pops for me. One of my favorite funny quotes from him happens on page 9.

"I hate that guy," Darrak said. "Loathe him. And I can't believe you let him kiss you. I almost made you slap him, but luckily for him he didn't try to slip you the tongue. It's obvious to me that he's only after one thing from you and--"
"He's gay," Eden said simply.
"Oh." There was a pause. "I totally knew that."

He’s such a spaz sometimes! LOL!

While Darrak is still funny, we really get a more well-rounded view of him in this book. We spend a lot more time in his head and get to watch him struggle with his identity. I really appreciated the identity crisis (even if I wanted to strangle him a time or two). I think watching him struggle with who he was now and the question of whether he even wanted to be that person made him so much more to me. It really made me empathize with him and have more patience while he occasionally behaved badly.

Eden continues to be a character that I love too. She just feels so much more realistic than a lot of heroines out there. She doesn’t melt at the thought of being bound to Darrak. She wants him out! She likes him, but she hates her will being violated like this, and she’s still not quite as sure of him as she’d like to be. In short, she’s smart. She’s always looking out for what’s best for her, but she doesn’t constantly bemoan the circumstances life has thrown at her. She’s had it pretty rough lately, but she’s willing to cope if she can keep a light at the end of the tunnel in sight.

How can I not like her? Even the dumb stuff she does—which I thought was pretty freaking dumb at times!—is understandable. She’s scared, and she’s looking for a helping hand. How can I resent her being willing to trust someone else when that’s the same thing Darrak is asking of her?

Quite a few things happened in this book that I wish I could talk about more. Alas, the dreaded spoilers stop me! I’ll restrain myself, but I do have to mention how pleased I am with how their relationship is progressing. There are no real easy answers for them, but they’re both still pushing themselves to hope for the best. Their determination is such that I can’t help but believe in them, even when the odds are against them.

The only thing that kept this from being a 5 star for me was my impatience with some of Eden’s actions. I wanted to smack her a time or two! She kept making a specific promise (vague for spoilers!) to Darrak and then breaking it. I could see why she was doing it, but it was frustrating. I empathized with her, but I still couldn’t help but get an eye twitch at the same time. But don’t let that discourage you! It was a very slight irritant in my overall enjoyment of the book. I still love Eden’s character and I still love this series for the sheer fun of it.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the third book so I can get more of this excellent series!

Huh huh. The blurb actually makes this sound like a reasonable premise, which is a credit to the craftsmanship of the wording, since it would be a challenge to tone this description down into something readable. Here's my blurb:

"A chick with minor psychic powers sucks up a bodiless demon who can talk to her mentally at night and can become corporeal during the day. Phasing in or out of her is orgasmic, and she shares a flaming-hot sexual attraction to this unholy supernatural inside her. How cool would it be to have a hot guy around who can't leave and is burning with lust for you? Oh, and btw, she's part angel and a black witch. And this author wants to be Laurell K. Hamilton when she grows up.

Like the blurb, the most impressive skill I can mention in this book is how the salient plot points can be delivered with a metaphorical straight face. Also, I did not know that "paranormal romance" was trying to be its own genre. A fun romp, but the ridiculousness of it wears through.

This is the second book in Rowen's Living in Eden Trilogy. I read the first one a month ago and really enjoyed reading that one, so I was definitely excited to pick the second book in the series up. Once again, I devoured this book in two days and definitely cannot wait to read the conclusion. It's a 4/5 for me because while I enjoy the story, some of the dialogue makes me chuckle in a cheesy sense and this book takes place over a matter of three days and while I like the development of relationships between Eden and Darrak, I'm also thinking, 'damn, these characters really haven't known each other long." But I still get early seasons Angel feels in this book since there is a private investigation business that caters to the "others" of the supernatural world. And I read this books so quickly. It is very hard to put down.

Well sadly I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book.
The story as a whole felt more....juvenile? Like I was having a hard time believing these overly emotional, tantrum throwing, wishy-washy characters were almost 30 and 1000+ years old respectively. I mean whats less terrifying than a demon who literally stomps his foot in frustration?

description
Also, the plot was all over the place- loyalties/opinions/feelings were changing left and right from one scene to the next and I did not get a lot of the character motivations going on.

For ex, why was Darrak suddenly all about wanting to be a demon again after proclaiming his goodness in the last book? It was like some weird existential demon crisis. Plus a lot of problematic things were just brushed over or just a lot of misogynistic moments in general (there were a lot)

Twas kinda weird.

Eden is officially now a black witch, since in the last book she had intercourse wuth darrak, and that means turning her into a black witch accidentally.
Darrak's old friend Theo was Darrak's best friend. along time ago they even made a plan to kill all 7 lords and take over the underworld and rule together.
Andy finds out that Darrak's a demon and that creatures of the sort do exist, but he didnt run away screaming and all...he was kinda excited.weird reaction for a human right?
then theres ben,
who thinks he can save eden...from darrak, and won't and doesn't plan on giving up anytime soon.
Graham was Eden's highschool gay friend, but a few hours after meeting Eden he died....was murdered behind the club they meant each other at.
Theo finds out about darrak's curse, and wants to help him....
Darrak can control eden's body at night while she's sleeping, but hasnt
told her that yet
Leena is the same, makes lasana and hangs around the house like the little kitty she really is.

Some very disturbing things happened to eden in this book, first she almost got killed because a malleuis member found out that she's a black witch, and trheir rule is to kill all black witches. she finds out her father's an angel, literally. lucifer summoned eden and told her that he need her help and that he's tired of living in hell and wants to be accepted in heaven again. but eden refused, so he brought up the fact that he has her mother's soul, and that that if she helps him he wont accept for the mother to be in hell, and instead decline so that she can have a chance to be in heaven(accepted), and if shes not she will be a drifter but anything s better that being in hell.
he also told eden that not to tell darrak about anything, because darrak has agreed with theo to find the weapon and kill lucas for the throne.
Later on theo steals an angels power, and eden and darrak kicked theo out and didnt want to follow his plan anymore, while andy was doing his job and was taking pictures of a werewolf who suspects to be cheating on his gf, the werewolf found out that he was there and lets just say things happened and andy is now a werewolf.*infectedSome problems show up again as ii read today, and some of those things are, another leader from the underworld is in the real world and is gaining power so that he can kill lucifer, darrak found out about lucifer and lucifer kissed eden for saving him, and some of her darkness went to him(because part of his punishment is that he attracts darkness).
Later in the end theo was killed and asmo was killed and lucas set eden's moms soul free and almost killed darrak but eden saved darrak.Andy is in total denial about his werewolf side. xD

Interesting sequel (or rather second book in a series). It didn't continue directly from what happened in the first book. By that, I mean the dynamics between the lead couple are "shook up" with this book.

Backing up. Eden was possessed by a demon named Darrak after she witnessed the death of his previous host, a serial killer. Because she's "a little bit psychic", she is one of the few hosts that can hear Darrak, and during the daytime, he can manifest a physical form, as long as they stay in close proximity.

At the end of the first book, Eden had become a black witch, like the black witch who originally cursed Darrak. So, while she genuinely was beginning to like Darrak, she had two big downsides above and beyond absolutely no privacy. (1) While she has all of this great power, she can't use it without slowly turning her soul black. And, (2) with every other host, Darrak has drained them till he killed them. And, they see no reason to believe that Eden will fare any differently.

Possible mild spoilers....

In this book, they've started their quest to find someone to break the curse and separate them, as the witch that cursed him was killed in the first book. But on their way to finding a contact, they bump in to Theo, Darrak's former demonic best friend, who hasn't had centuries of close contact with humans to humanize him.

Darrak finds himself torn. Theo thinks that once Darrak is returned to his former glory, he will regain his former mental view on life. So Darrak is unsure whether to accept his new "good guy" persona, or if he should try to be aloof, or even cruel.

So, while the first book was mainly about getting over Eden's fear and seeing them adjust to each other, this book has a lot of strife as Darrak PMS-es while he decides if he wants to be a good guy or a bad guy.

By the way, Darrak and Theo are archdemons. Created by Lucifer originally as succubus-es, before being promoted to be exclusive guards to Lucifer. They are -- or rather Darrak was and Theo still is -- big bads.

On the other hand, we find out that Eden's father was an angel, making her a nephilim. Talk about a mis-matched pair. But there is good news in that; it might be that Eden's angelic half will keep Darrak from draining her to death.

Good read. I'll still say this is urban fantasy, rather than paranormal romance, but it looks to be the type with a monogamous couple throughout. Similar to Eileen Wilks' "World of the Lupi" series.

Something Wicked is the second book in Michelle Rowen’s Living In Eden series. In the first novel, The Demon In Me, Eden Riley is possessed by a demon named Darrak after witnessing the murder of his former “host”, he has nowhere to go but into Eden. Turns out Eden isn’t just a normal human, she’s part black witch and because of that during the daytime hours Darrak can take his human form.

At night Darrak is the demon in Eden, she can hear him & sometimes he can control her. That said, things are getting critical, especially when they sleep together. Darrak is slowly draining Eden of energy, but when they sleep together parts of her soul turn black as part of a curse Darrak is living with. They have to find a way to break the curse before it’s too late.

There are a lot of things going on in Something Wicked, from a new next door neighbour who isn’t as timid as he looks to Leena (werecat/panther) & Darrak having a blow out. There’s also a big honking WTF moment at the end & I can tell you now, Eden’s gonna be pissed. The attraction between Eden & Darrak is explosive, hot hot hot. I don’t blame her for getting a little soot on her soul for Darrak.

I can’t tell you enough just how much I’d love to have a demon in me…okay that sounded really bad. I meant Darrak, okay that still sounds bad! Ha. I love Darrak, he’s snarky, bad but he’s gaining more and more humanity..which means he is falling for Eden hard. Eden is so level headed, one of these days she’s gonna blow. She keeps taking all sorts of bad things and living through them, maybe with the help of a little black magic but it’s always in a life or death situation!

I have always loved the way Michelle Rowen writes, she’s snarky, fresh & so original. Her world building is urban, I can visualize Eden & Darrak in Toronto..but you could picture them in any city. The characters are always hilarious, but they are strong & emotional when need be. A book by Michelle Rowen is like a hot cup of tea on a cold day, hot! I adore this series.

If you need some more snark in your life, grab a copy of Something Wicked.

I didn't like this one as much as the first, the demon is so sure that he'll be back to being demonic once he's free of the curse half-heartedly gets a start on that here with some pettiness, which detracts from his appeal. There are some interesting discoveries for the pair, but I just can't say that they will make me want to read the next book.

Something Wicked is the second book in A Living In Eden series by author Michelle Rowen. In the first book, we read about Darrak possessing Eden's body and learning about the witch's curse that he has. We learned that he is a Demon who is slowly killing Eden by sucking away her life energy whether he wants to or not. Darrak has been possessing people for over 300 years and within that time, he has slowly begun to acquire some humanity.

While trying to find a powerful wizard to break the curse, Eden and Darrak run into another archdemon, who just so happens to be Darraks best friend from Hell. While, Theo was as bad as a Demon visiting Earth can be, I still enjoyed his character enough to see what was going to happen between Darrak and Theo. I wanted to know if Theo was going to be the typical Demon and betray everyone he knows. The addition of a new neighbor next to Edens apartment was also a nice story that intertwined with the plot. Considering who the new neighbor is, it makes for some interesting reading once Darrak and Eden figure it out.

Now just because Darrak and Eden aren't suppose to be romantically involved, doesn't mean the book lets us down on the sexy factor! The scenes that are in the book are smoking hot and can make you envious for your own Demon!

While I liked this book as a sequel, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book. Darrak did have his Demon personality out more in this book than his humanity personality. There were times I just wanted to have Eden exorcise him and end it already because of his smart ass attitude and lies. But just as I was hoping Eden would call Demon-Busters-Are-Us, Darrak changes my feelings with his smooth talking persona.

While I still enjoyed the first book better than this one, I am still looking forward to the final book in the series. Their are some storyline plots that I just need to know about, such as the mysterious captive in the dungeon, and I need to know if this sexy couple is going to get their happily ever after!

Part 2 of the Living In Eden series and it’s every bit as good as the first, if not better. Eden has had a little time to get used to her resident demon, Darrak, but he continues to surprise and irritate her on an almost daily basis. Still intent on finding a method to break the curse (that binds him to her body), he ‘borrows’ her body while she’s asleep to go and meet an old friend, Theo, another Archdemon. Theo is everything Darrak used to be: emotion-free, evil, dangerous and without any moral compass. He assures Darrak that inhabiting human bodies for the past 300 years is the reason why Darrak now behaves more like a human; the moment he shakes off Eden, he’ll revert back to being a full Archdemon again – and he’s tempted. Who’s to say that these ‘feelings’ he has for Eden are real? He might be imagining them.

Together they battle against Theo, Lucifer and Eden’s almost-boyfriend-turned-demon-killer Ben, while coping with werewolves and the Malleus (the demon-killing-Cult). Seems like everyone wants Eden dead and the more time Darrak spends with Theo, the less she trusts him.

Michelle Rowen has an excellent ear for dialogue, especially the sharp rivalry between Darrak and Leena (a were-cat that’s also taken up residence with Eden). Darrak has some great one liners and remains a brilliant example of a gorgeous, hot demon with a nice side. I’m looking forward to the 3rd and final part of this series. 5/5

The only witch who could lift Darrak's curse is dead, it's time to up the ante: Enlist demons from hell. But can you really trust demons who've no respect for human life... or love.

Eden and Darrak spend a lot of time distrusting each others feelings and motives. And they find themselves working for different sides in this one.

Darrak is still fun and sexy, the Malleus annoying as hell, and the neighbour next door intriguing. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable book. It's just missing... something... to make it a great story.

This one is a good read, but lacks the energy the first book had. We are introduced to more demons and Lucifer in this one. Darrak struggles with himself. Should he go back to being a bad demon or follow his heart and love Eden? Don't get me wrong, this was a decent story. But I prefer a bit more action and suspense, and romance too.

And another Michelle Rowen novel that I simply devoured.

After reading the first part "The demon in me" I went straight on to part 2, so for me the repeat of certain events that played out in book 1 weren't necessary. However, I can see how they can come in handy for those that do not read the 3 books one after the other.

Very interesting storyline, with some new - yet very familiar ;-) - characters. I wasn't particularly fond of Asmodeus' personality, but that may be because I used the same demon in my own books, and he acts completely different there haha

The inner struggles for both main characters are very real and very understandable. However, sometimes they jumped from one end of the spectrum all the way to the other end a little too quickly, and seemingly without cause. Perhaps that could have been a bit more gradual.

So for that reason I am giving it 1 star less than the first book. But, don't get me wrong, it's still a great story. And yes, I am hopping straight on to book #3. I'm just way too curious how the story is going to play out.

"Something Wicked", second in the "Living in Eden" series is pretty much a filler book.
As I mentioned in my review of "The Demon in Me" there is just not enough material for a trilogy, possibly not even two full length novels.
Eden wants Darrak out her body asap. Darrak is happy enough with the state of things but knows it can't last forever (particularly as his continued presence in Eden's body will kill her in twelve months).
And, even though Eden is the joint owner of a detective agency, it doesn't really feature except as a setting.
I can understand why the author choose to divide the story into three parts, every author needs an income, but "Something Wicked" didn't work for me.
The character of the were-panther Leena was interesting but never used to any great effect.

Eden and Darrak would both like to break the curse that compels him to possess her body at night, although during the day he can assume a corporeal form. It seems the only help they can get is from unscrupulous denizens of the underworld, but they’re desperate enough to try it.

Nothing romantic about this, in my opinion. Eden and Darrak are attracted to one another physically, but they can’t act on it for fear of tainting Eden’s soul even further. The story was one long slog of them meeting various other characters (some friends, some foes), most of whom think the only way to help is to kill one or both of them. It wasn’t charming or fun or funny at all. I was just very ‘meh’ about the entire story.

I’ve enjoyed other books by this author, but this one simply did not do it for me. Giving it three stars.

I am in love with this series! The writing, the wit, the characters and their amazing personalities, the detailing and the weaving of the story overall has been outstanding. While there is a lot going on, it’s not overwhelming, and as the story goes on the different pieces start to fit and give you those moments of clarity or surprise.

I enjoyed this second installment! The plot was maybe definitely a bit convoluted, but this was easy enough to look past. I liked that Darrak and Eden’s relationship was not smooth sailing, but the author didn’t rely on the classic miscommunication trope, which I appreciated. I’m definitely still intrigued enough to finish out the trilogy.

Totally EXCELLENT Again 😁

I've fallen in Love with this series completely 😃. Derrick is definitely different for a demon, but his character is so much fun 👹. Eden is of course, clueless at times, but with a heart of gold 😍. Thanks again Michelle, I truly LOVE your stories 🤓.

My Review:
This is a book that I picked up entirely on a whim a couple of weeks ago. The cover was super-sexy (I know, I am a cover-slut) and the story line was intriguing. What I didn't realize at the time was that this is the second book in an Urban Fantasy series. No, I haven't read book #1, but that did not affect my enjoyment of this book at all. This is a fabulous book with a really interesting and creative premise.

Eden is a human. She's psychic and has, on occasion, worked with the police on their investigations. It was while she was on one of those investigations that a person was killed. That person just happened to be possessed with the archdemon Darrack. He found himself in need of a new host and Eden was there, but his possession of Eden is different than any other human possession that he has done over the last 300 years. Because she is psychic, she can hear him in her mind during the night when he resides in her body. During daylight, he has his own physical form...it just can't be further away from her than 100 yards.

During the progression of the first book, somehow Eden ended up as a Black Witch. The issue with that is, calling on her black magic will doom her soul to hell as will having sex with the very sexy Darrack. They had sex once in the last book so she already has a mark against her soul. Neither one of them want any more, so no more sex, regardless of how bad they both want it.

It's a very sexy book with a lot of sexual tension. Eden & Darrack spend all the time in very close proximity, so it is difficult for them to resist the draw to one another.

Darrack has also been dealing with some other issues. He has always been a demon...Satan created him from hellfire, so he has never had to deal with human emotional issues. He has never had a conscience or had to deal with any kind of human feelings, but after 300 years within human hosts, especially the goodness of Eden, that is changing. Humanity is becoming part of his persona especially when it comes to Eden and his growing feelings for her. This is even more apparent to him as his friend and fellow archdemon Theo comes on the scene and starts razzing him about his newfound humanity.

This was, quite simply, a great book with a great story and a great cast of characters. I can't wait to see where the series goes from here. I don't know if I will go back and read book #1. I am sure it would be an equally fantastic read, but I feel like I know everything about what happened there. Regardless, I can guarantee that I will be reading book #3, That Old Black Magic, which comes out December 6th.

★★★★☆ I loved it!

Darrak has to be one of my favourite male leads. He never fails to impress and have me giggling my head off. Someone else who never fails to impress is Michelle Rowen. She's easily in my top authors and I can't wait for the day that I've read all of her books. Something Wicked is a fantastic addition to the Living In Eden series. While not as perfect as The Demon In Me, Something Wicked isn't a victim to the sequel syndrome. The story is relevant and keeps moving forward. Our main characters learn more about themselves and each other and the supporting cast is just as fascinating as the stars.

Eden, now a black witch, is having difficulty dealing with all her power causing her to react to the extreme and doubt her own feelings. We go a a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride with her but Darrak is no different. He's having trouble dealing with all the humanness inside him, bursting to break free. Our lovebirds that can't touch keep the sexual tension going making the love scenes even hotter. A blast from the past tries to corrupt our delicious Darrak confusing Eden even more. Throw in the mix a little visit from the Devil and you know things are going to get crazy. I loved the Devil the most and it looks like he'll have more page time in the future too. Yay!

The big thing I hate here is that it's so drilled into us that Darrak having feelings in general isn't normal for a demon but Darrak's old friend was clearly in love with a human a while back. Seems kind of conflicting if you ask me. Moving on, as with the previous novel I didn't see most of the surprises coming, most especially Eden's family history. Unless I forgot something from the first book which is entirely possible. So, I loved Something Wicked a lot and only hated it a little which means it's a keeper for me and a series that I'll be looking forward to with every release. PNR lovers should get a kick out of this.

Cover: A good match to the first one but nothing special.

Something Wicked is a romance in contemporary time period with paranormal and suspense elements.

Eden Riley is in a fix. She is a white witch possessed by a demon named Darrak. And not just any demon but a cursed archdemon created by Satan/Lucifer. She once allowed passion to take her and her soul has turned dark. In the witch community, she is now a Black Witch. Eventually, her desire to dip into the dark well of power will consume her and she will be sentenced to hell.

Through no choice of his own, Darrak, an archdemon. He is condemned. He possesses a living being’s body, but only for a short time. Once he drains them of their life energy, he passes on to his next host. Now, he finds himself in Eden. Rather than just a spectator, at sunrise he returns to human form with limited demonic abilities until sunset when he vaporizes and returns to possess Eden. Even there, Darrak and Eden can communicate. And for the first time in his existence, he has human emotion. Never in these 300 years has his determination to separate himself from his host been stronger. They try to solve this problem by approaching a magician assistant to break their curse without hurting either of them. Meanwhile, six women have gone missing, and Eden seems to be in the middle of it!

Something Wicked is part of Michelle Rowen‘s Living in Eden Novels series. If you haven’t read Book 1, The Demon in Me, I encourage you to do so, because Darrak rocks! He’s just a few steps below the original bad guy.

Ms. Rowen’s novel is emotionally driven. It did seem that Eden fit her name too well. I never thought of her as a Black Witch. Many times I thought she was too naïve for our time. As I kept reading Ms. Rowen kept be absorbed with this story. The character’s motivations were strong, and I was never sure which direction it would take them. Eden grown to care for Darrak, can she keep a dark secret from him? Is Darrak so desperate for independence that he will risk Eden’s soul? Read it to find out.

This is the sequel to The Demon in Me, and shows the same interesting balance of a partner/love interest who is inherently evil. This time, though, the focus is much more on Darrak than Eden as he struggles to comprehend what he’s become and tries to recover his former self whatever way he can.

While that might sound selfish, it’s not as selfish as an arch demon might hope.

Darrak is living off Eden’s energy, and while she is slowly being drained by him. He wants to be his old, evil self. It’s simpler.

He wants to believe his dependency on her, and the fact that she’s the first of his hosts to hear him, is why he wants to preserve her existence. Though why he’s so obsessed with the color of her soul he can’t quite explain. His life would be more enjoyable, if not easier, if they gave in to their attraction, but thanks to the curse left by the same witch who destroyed his body, lovemaking only turns her soul blacker, something he refuses to be responsible for.

But before you get the sense that this book is all angsty, Michelle Rowen doesn’t write that way. Not only are they on a desperate search to restore Darrak’s power so he can stop feeding on Eden, an effort that seems doomed to failure, but they’re being hunted by a group of power fanatics determined to eradicate all demons and any tainted by the dark even the slightest bit.

Something Wicked plays with the odd, and very dangerous, not quite relationship developing between Darrak and Eden, while also adding a mysterious human group and some insight into who Darrak was before that allows for a lot of tension and desperate circumstances on top of the moral quandary and relationship issues. It’s a complex novel that explores real questions of who we are and what defines us, but at the same time it’s a thrilling adventure. While definitely in the same world, Something Wicked takes the scenario began in The Demon in Me along new paths with some big surprises on the way, surprises that are well seeded if only the reader knew what to look for.

I have to say that I liked this book almost as much as the first book. It reminds me of the Georginia Kincaid series a bit, not in plot really, but in it's funny, snarky but lovable characters. I mean, he's an ex-incubus turned archdemon who's possessing an innocent young woman, but doesn't want to be bad. And I find him adorable and endearing. And Eden was just as cute and quick witted. But what I liked most is that no one is perfect. They are relatable characters going through emotional highs and lows, but always with their sense of humor in tact.

Here is one of my favorite lines from the book:

[Darrak says to Eden during a very tense moment] “When I change . . . I can’t guarantee how I’ll act then. Toward you. I don’t know.”

Right. He felt that when the curse was broken, he’d revert back to his old demonic self—no humanity need apply, right?

“So you’ll become dark, dangerous, and not a fabulous conversationalist?” she asked.

“The first two. I could always hold my own at a cocktail party.”

I also really liked that this book is not written entirely from Eden's perspective. We get to see inside Darrak's mind as well. That's out of necessity though, since Darrak "borrows" Eden's body while she's sleeping so that he can walk around at night. Loved it. I liked that he had a way to speak and do things at night as well.

New characters are introduced, including Darrak's oldest demonic friend among others, and established characters are embellished through general mischief and mayhem. I will definitely be reading the last book in the trilogy to see how things are resolved.
