A beautifully illustrated dictionary containing detailed information about every kind of critter you can think of. Have great fun learning about the animals in our world, right from the comfort of your favorite armchair.
Okay, so to start with, I feel obligated to mention that GoodReads has the wrong title and author for this book. It's Visual Dictionary of Animals by Weldon Owen.
It's also the single best visual reference I've seen for ecology or animal biology. It's the type of book that I'd have gotten lost in as a child, spending hundreds of hours pouring over its pages.
The pictures are captivating, the layout makes complete sense, and the subject matter is spellbinding. Highly recommend to anyone even remotely interested in the topic or wanting something interesting for people to page through.
Quite possibly the most beautifully illustrated children's reference book on wildlife I have come across, and I have quite a collection of such titles already so it's no small praise! All branches of multicellular animals, from the blue whale to tiny invertebrates, corals, sponges and jelly fish and everything in between. Besides depicting a wide range of species in any particular branch, useful phylogenetic and cladistic trees showing evolutionary relationships are also shown, so we know each animal group's place in the amazing diversity of life. In addition there are simple diagrams of anatomy and animal behavior interspersed throughout, making for a visually outstanding piece of work all in all. That said, there is hardly any text and so it is purely a pictorial guide as its title would imply, designed to spark wonder and curiosity rather than impart technical knowledge.
Great illustrations throughout. Not text heavy as it is a visual dictionary, but still lots of interesting facts.i could have worn this book out as a kid. And as an adult, I still find it fascinating.
