"one of the best cruising accounts I have read in a long time." John Kretschmer
Sailing to Newfoundland documents a solo journey on a 40' sailboat from Florida to the remote and uninhabited fjords of the south coast of Newfoundland, one of the few places in the world where raw, unspoiled nature meets the ocean and provides sheltered anchorages.
From the author of Becoming a Sailor, Journey to the Ragged Islands, and Chasing the Nomadic Dream, this book puts you in the cockpit, and in the fjords, and on top of glacier-cut mountains in the remote backcountry of Newfoundland.
"Sailing to Newfoundland" is one of the best cruising accounts I have read in a long time. Paul Trammell's latest book, describing his single-handed sail from Florida to Newfoundland, is a wise, inspiring tale that reminds me of Rockwell Kent's classic, "N by E." Trammell writes like he lives and sails, with keen attention to detail, a profound respect for nature, deep humility and, best of all, with an almost childlike sense of awe. He never fails to embrace the majesty of this dramatic coast as he pilots his 40' cutter "Windflower" into one stunning anchorage after another, not a small task for a single-hander. He sets off on hikes and climbs the rugged edges, determined to find a secret trout pond or just a glimpse of his boat from a higher perspective. Through the course of the book Newfoundland changes from a dreamy destination, to a forbidding land of rock and fog, to a challenging but enchanted cruising ground with some of, in Trammell's words, "the nicest people in the world." I thoroughly enjoyed the sailing sections of the journey and learned a lot from Paul about boat set up and navigation. I suggest following him along his journey using Google Maps satellite view - it adds depth and lets you ride along vicariously. I've read Paul's first book "Becoming a Sailor", and enjoyed it immensely. I look forward to reading his other books and following along on his future adventures.
As a young boy who visited Nova Scotia each summer I dream of sailing north as well to the inlets found in Nova Scotia. Paul’s words describe an experience passing Nova Scotia with such great detail I may find myself also extending my own dream. Looking forward to the next book…
This is Paul’s best book so far. I love that he shares the experience of learning and transitioning into this new life. Lessons learned. I am not a fan of his YouTube videos but his podcasts are good and I have become a fan of his writing. I would still encourage anyone to check out his YouTube channel. Most would enjoy it. It does provide some visual context to the books.
