“My wife’s loyalty was absolute. Or so I thought...” - Sebastian

The instant I locked eyes with Julia van Dieren, it was as if the universe conspired to halt time.

A profound pull I'd never felt before overtook me, more than just attraction or fascination. It was as if my soul, dormant for so long, had been stirred by a melody only she could invoke.

While Julia became my solace, her mother, the formidable Margaret van Dieren, became determined to put an end to it. With every disapproving glance and hushed whisper, she wove a web of dissent, aiming to tear us apart.

Yet, nothing could prepare me for the heart-wrenching blow that fate had in store. A tragedy, unforeseen and devastating, descended upon us, shaking the very foundations of my world.

In a room echoing with tales of all sorts, our own story began—a tale of hopeful beginnings, tested by adversity, only to be irrevocably altered by a cruel twist of fate I might never recover from.

Disappointing!

Their history dragged on and on pretty much reiterating the same feelings over and over and then to leave off again at the wedding? A waste of a book if you ask me.

“My wife’s loyalty was absolute. Or so I thought…” — Sebastian

This story doesn’t just pull you in—it grips you by the chest and refuses to let go.

From the moment Sebastian sees Julia van Dieren, there’s an almost painful intensity to it, like something fated, something unavoidable. It isn’t written as simple love at first sight—it feels deeper, heavier, like two souls colliding after lifetimes apart. Julia becomes more than just a love interest; she becomes his peace, his escape, the only place where the noise in his world quiets down.

And that’s exactly why it hurts so much when everything begins to fall apart.

Margaret van Dieren is not just an overbearing mother—she feels like a looming threat, a quiet storm brewing in the background. Every look, every word, every calculated move she makes carries weight. I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was capable of something far worse than she let on—and honestly, I still believe she had something to do with the destruction of Sebastian’s family. That suspicion lingers like a wound that never quite closes.

Then the tragedy hits—and it hits hard. It’s not just sad, it’s suffocating. The kind of loss that changes a person completely. And Sebastian does change… but not always in ways that are easy to forgive.

There were moments where he made me so angry I had to stop reading. The way he shut Julia out, the way he turned cold when she was trying so desperately to love him, to support him—it felt cruel. At times, it honestly seemed like he was punishing her for something she didn’t do, almost blaming her for her mother’s actions. And that hurt, because Julia never deserved that.

Julia was the one holding everything together. She felt real—like someone who genuinely just wanted to do the right thing, to love someone fully even when it wasn’t easy. She didn’t give up on him, even when he pushed her away, even when it cost her pieces of herself. That kind of loyalty? That kind of love? It was heartbreaking to witness.

And yet… despite all the pain, all the frustration, all the moments that made me want to scream—I loved this story.

Because it felt real. Messy, unfair, complicated, and raw in a way that doesn’t try to romanticize pain but forces you to sit in it. The ending, especially, stayed with me. It didn’t erase the hurt, but it gave it meaning. It made everything feel like it led somewhere, like all that brokenness wasn’t for nothing.

This isn’t just a love story. It’s a story about grief, about blame, about the way people can hurt the ones they love the most—and still, somehow, find their way back… or learn to live with what’s been lost.

It broke me a little. And I think that’s why I won’t forget it.

This book was the hardest of the books to read of all the series so far. Julia is very dedicated to Sebastian and Sebastian is equally devoted to him. It makes you want to believe in love at first sight and that you can be with anyone no matter what. This is very powerful and leaves you wanting to read what happens In Sebastian’s book.
