My in-laws took me to my favorite indy book shop, gave me a gift certificate as an early birthday present, and this was the result! Thank you, Elaine and Ed!!

I have been obsessed with mushrooms for the past few years, to the point where I am now working on a story where they are a central element, and I could not resist this gorgeous book. I’ll give this to DK Publishing: their books are not often deep dives on their subjects, but they know how to make a book pretty! This one is actually much more detailed than I expected, if I am honest! The authors start at the literal beginning, by explaining how fungi came to evolve from single-cell organisms into the wondrous things we call mushrooms, all the way to advice on how to photograph and identify them!

I’m sure mushroom experts or experienced foragers may already know everything covered in this book, I learned a lot! I enjoyed the illustration style, and while the book’s scope is wider than it is deeper, it’s an excellent place to start if you are curious about fungi – whether you are interested in the habitats they grow in, how they interact with other organisms, which are safe to eat, to use medicinally and so forth. The format feels a bit like a textbook, but the scientific terms are well explained, so casual readers can get a lot out of this book even without a biology degree.

A lovely coffee table and reference book for anyone who is interested in mushrooms!

An informative read about fungi for anybody who wants to learn more about these magnificent organisms that provide so much to us, from food to medicines. They are one of nature's best wonders that can heal our bodies and deserve our respect and appreciation. The scientific analysis is corroborated by marvellous illustrations, detailed explanations, and an extensive list for further reading; there is much more to discover about the kingdom of fungi, and this superb reference guide is a great way to commence the journey.

This is the tldr of everything about fungi. The book covers everything from evolution, growth, habitats, to medical and everyday uses. There is a lot of interesting information and some bits were fascinating.

I am giving it a low score because the chapters don't really provide very in-depth information and sections are no more 200 - 300 words long. This really breaks any flow there might have been and makes it difficult to say engaged. The fact that it's a rather dry book doesn't help either.

The illustrations are basic and don't do the mushrooms justice.

Such a fun book to flip through and gain knowledge on fungus. The illustrations of all the different fungi were beautiful.
